The Americans (2013) : Why such Paige hate?

Re: Why such Paige hate?

Yep, and that is the same problem that people had with Dana Brody.

It seems that in shows about kids having to deal with terrible revelations due to their parents' activities, they often choose to have a daughter be the eldest child, and thus the one who is most aware of, and affected by, the situation.

I'm really not trying to make this a gender thing, but it in the shows I recall seeing; it's always the teenage girl who becomes the focus of the emotional storyline. She (the character & the actress) then becomes the recipient of a lot of negative reactions from some in the audience.

Perhaps there are shows where the oldest child is a young teenage boy, but I can't think of one. I'd be curious to know in similar situations, how that character is perceived and written.

Re: Why such Paige hate?

prob because girls are more emotional where as the boy would be like "oh cool" ok back to my game

Agreed!

Re: Why such Paige hate?

I'm baffled by some posts on these boards as well. I think the Paige storyline is one of the most intriguing ones, and that means something in a show as good as The Americans. The actress is playing one of the most troubled characters on TV right now and she is doing a good job. Honestly,I can't even say she annoyed me once. And the comparisons with Dinah from Homeland actually annoy me because in my opinion they are completely unfounded.

The Americans is the best show on TV now, hands down and what amazes me most is the fact that I expect so much from it and I never get disappointed. Amazing cast, amazing crew.

Love Paige,so curious about what's going to happen with her.She is the character we,the viewers, should relate to the most.

Says who? Can't we all choose who we relate to?

Re: Why such Paige hate?

I think Paige is essential to the feel of the show - she is the straight man, the innocent confidant. Otherwise you would just be in this world of spies, but what I'm most interested about is what others would say when they find out about P&E - especially Stan. I definitely want to see him finding out - and making a deal.

It was similar in Dexter, people finding out about him had a strange pull.

Re: Why such Paige hate?

couldn't agree more. This, in my opinion, is one of those plot points that we've been waiting for since season 1. The Americans isn't a show about a spy couple. It's a spy family. We all knew from the beginning that the children add a whole other twist and dynamic to the plot. One could argue that the writers waited too long for this sub plot to play out in the first place. (maybe the children should have been a few years older than they are?).

Either way, I love how it's playing out. It seems like a light bulb went off in Paige's head and she wants to be a team player as well. The motherly/spy instincts that Elizabeth displayed in episode 11 is hitting Paige now too. Family firs.

Great acting on Paige's behalf. And the rest of the cast as well. Can't wait for the season finale!

She's too whiny. Just shut up and thank your mother that your first sexual experience wasn't with a dirty bum under a bridge
