‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Cast Will Include Spider-Man and Chris Pratt

Robert Downey Jr. took a break from filming “Avengers: Infinity War” to give fans confirmation on one of the biggest rumors surrounding the newest Marvel movie. In a Facebook Live filmed on the “Avengers” set, Downey’s Q&A was revealed to be shot by none other than Tom Holland, who plays Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Turning the camera around, Holland reveals himself to be on the movie’s set and covered in motion picture dots (for his mask, which moves with the motion of Holland’s facial expressions). In doing so, Holland and Downey Jr. have confirmed that the young actor will reprise his role as Spider-Man in “Avengers: Infinity War.”

Later in the video, “Guardians of the Galaxy” star Chris Pratt joined the “Iron Man” actor, also confirming his role in the upcoming sequel to “Avengers: Age of Ultron” and “Captain America: Civil War.”

‘The Batman’ Has Found a New Director

The Batman” standalone film has found its new director.

Matt Reeves is in early talks to take over directing duties after Ben Affleck stepped down from the role in late January. Affleck will still star in and produce the Warner Bros. movie.

Sources tell Variety that the “Cloverfield” and “War for the Planet of the Apes” director has already committed to helming the superhero pic, although a deal isn’t done yet. Variety first reported that Reeves was high on the list of directors to replace Affleck, but, until recently, meetings were still being held with other filmmakers.

Affleck will still have a significant role in the direction of the film — the first solo movie to star Affleck as the Caped Crusader — after writing the script with Geoff Johns, but he will now have more time to focus on acting. »

Thandie Newton In Talks for Han Solo Movie (Exclusive)

Westworld” star Thandie Newton may be headed to a galaxy far, far away.

Sources tell Variety the actress is in negotiations to join the upcoming Han Solo spinoff, starring Alden Ehrenreich.

Donald Glover, Woody Harrelson and Emilia Clarke co-star in the Disney-Lucasfilm feature, with Phil Lord and Chris Miller directing.

As Variety exclusively reported this week, “Fleabag” actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge is also in talks for a key role in the pic. Newton’s character is unknown.

The untitled “Han Solo” hits theaters May 25, 2018.

Produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Allison Shearmur, the Star Wars spinoff takes place before the original “A New Hope,” similarly to the recent spinoff, “Rogue One,” which has amassed over a billion dollars worldwide.

Newton is coming off her critically acclaimed turn in HBO’s “Westworld” as Maeve, the renegade robot whose gutty performance earned her two SAG (best performance and ensemble in a drama) nominations and a Golden Globe nomination. »

Jake Gyllenhaal is joining Joaquin Phoenix and John C. Reilly in “The Sisters Brothers.”

Jacques Audiard is directing the indie feature, which is based on Patrick DeWitt’s novel of the same name. Reilly, Michael De Luca, Rosa Attrab and Alison Dickey are producing.

Reilly optioned the rights to the book and will produce through his shingle with De Luca who recently joined the project as a producer. The story follows two brothers — Eli and Charlie Sisters — who are hired to kill a prospector who has stolen from their boss. The story takes place in Oregon in 1851. The book won the 2012 Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for humor writing.

The pic is Audiard’s follow-up to his Palme d’Or winning “Dheepan,” which premiered at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. Production is set to start sometime this summer.

Coen Brothers to Bring Back ‘Scarface’ in 2018

Universal Pictures announced Friday that they will release a remake of Al Pacino’s classic crime tale “Scarface” on August 10, 2018, filling in a slot previously listed as “Untitled Universal Event Film.” The studio has Joel and Ethan Coen attached to the project to polish the script, which had been previously worked on by “Boardwalk Empire” creator Terence Winter. The plot will follow the basic framework of Pacino’s film, but will change it from a Cuban immigrant in Miami to a Mexican immigrant in Los Angeles. ‘Jurassic World’ Sequel Adds ‘Silence of the Lambs’ Actor Ted Levine (Exclusive)

Buffalo Bill is looking to get prehistoric.

Silence of the Lambs” actor Ted Levine has rounded out cast of Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment’s next “Jurassic World” film, Variety has learned exclusively.

Rafe Spall, Toby Jones, and “The Get Down” actor Justice Smith have also recently joined returning stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, including who Levine will be playing in the sequel to the 2015 hit.

J.A. Bayona is on board to direct with Frank Marshall producing along with Pat Crowley and Belén Atienza. Colin Trevorrow, who helmed “Jurassic World,” penned the script with his writing partner, Derek Connolly.

Trevorrow will also executive produce with Steven Spielberg. VP of production Sara Scott is overseeing production on behalf of Universal.

Box Office: ‘Fifty Shades Darker’ Spanks ‘Lego Batman Movie’ on Thursday

Universal Pictures’ “Fifty Shades Darker” grossed $5.7 million at 3,120 theaters on Thursday. Warner Bros. Animation and DC Entertainment’s family film “Lego Batman Movie,” meanwhile, saw $2.2 million in Thursday previews, while “John Wick: Chapter 2” also opened to a solid $2.2 million for Lionsgate.

Early tracking suggested that “Lego Batman” would win the weekend with more than $60 million, ahead of “Fifty Shades,” which was estimated closer to $40 million.

James Foley directed “Fifty Shades Darker” based on a script that Niall Leonard adapted from E. L. James’ novel of the same name. Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan co-star as Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey. The film currently has a 9% on Rotten Tomatoes. “John Wick: Chapter 2” and “Lego Batman” are faring better with critics with a 90% and 91%, respectively, on the review aggregation website.

Stanley Kallis, TV Producer of ‘Hawaii Five-o,’ ‘Mission: Impossible,’ Dies at 88

Television producer and writer Stanley Kallis, who worked on shows including “Hawaii Five-o” and “Mission: Impossible,” died at his home in Laguna Beach, Calif. on Jan. 28.

He helped develop the concept for “Hawaii 5-0” for CBS with writer Leonard Freeman, then moved to producing “Mission: Impossible” with Peter Graves and Martin Landau before returning to “Hawaii 5-0” as executive producer.

His next show as producer was “Police Story,” created by Joseph Wambaugh, which won the Emmy for drama series in 1976. In the late 70s, Kallis produced  “Washington Behind Closed Doors,” a mini-series for ABC that won seven Emmy nominations. »

Berlinale: Stanley Tucci Defends the Arts as Trump Looms

Locarno Fest First Look Industry Event To Focus on Baltic Cinema

The Locarno Festival is focusing its First Look industry initiative on films from the Baltics, and turning its Signs of Life section, dedicated to edgy experimental cinema, into a competitive sidebar.

First Look, which is dedicated to films in post, will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Baltic cinema, with a focus on Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian works. Between five and seven projects will be selected to be screened for sales agents, buyers, and programmers during Locarno’s Industry Days. The projects will also be awarded cash prizes.

This year’s First Look Jury comprises Cannes Critics’ Week artistic director Charles Tesson, SXSW Film Festival chief Janet Pierson, and Sylvain Auzou, who is deputy director of the Venice Film Festival’s Venice Days section.

Signs of Life started in 2014 as a non-competitive Locarno section dedicated to new visual languages and formats in moviemaking.

The Berlinale spotlight shone on African cinema on Saturday with the premiere of Senegalese filmmaker Alain Gomis’ Kinshasa-based drama “Félicité.”

The film centers on a strongly independent and passionate singer in the Congolese capital who is forced to raise money for her son’s operation after he has an accident.

While grateful for the opportunity to screen his film in Berlin, Gomis, speaking at a press conference, expressed frustration with the travel restrictions on Africans in Europe and in particular the problems faced by his Congolese actors Véro Tshanda Beya, Gaetan Claudia, and Papi Mpaka in obtaining visas to attend the festival. “Getting the visas was really difficult for our three incredible actors.
