Lee Byung-hun Talks Knives, Westerns and Magnificent Seven | Exclusive

21 December 2016 8:26 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Byung-hun Lee may not be a household name in America, but that is sure to change. The South Korean actor, model, and singer is a megastar in Asia. He started out on Korean television in the early nineties before making the leap to the big screen. His break out role was Joint Security Area in 2000. It catapulted him to stardom and became the top grossing film in Korean history.

Lee had a string of Asian hits before Hollywood came calling. He starred alongside Josh Hartnett in the 2009 Vietnamese thriller, I Come with the Rain. That role led to his American debut as the ass-kicking ninja, Storm Shadow, in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. The overall film didn't remotely meet expectations, but Byung-hun Lee was a standout. He was phenomenal as Storm Shadow. That performance put western audiences on notice that Korea's box office king was crossing over.

‘Suicide Squad’ Leads IMDb’s Top 10 Movies of 2016 List

19 December 2016 12:48 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Warner Bros.’ "Suicide Squad" has taken the title of top 2016 movie on IMDb, based on the number of page views on the film database site.

The top five films were all based on comic-book characters. Disney-Marvel’s "Captain America: Civil War" took the second slot, followed by Warner’s "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," Fox’s "Deadpool," and Fox’s "X-Men: Apocalypse."

"Captain America: Civil War" is the top box office performer on the list at $1.15 billion worldwide.

Despite negative reviews, "Suicide Squad" performed well at the box office with $745 million worldwide following its August release and solidified Margot Robbie as an A-list star for her performance as Harley Quinn. Warner Bros. began its publicity campaign a year earlier at Comic-Con in San Diego.

Robbie’s performance was so popular that Warner Bros. announced last week that it has hired David Ayer to direct the spinoff "Gotham City Sirens," featuring Robbie’s Harley Quinn and other female DC villains. »

Kodak Introduces Reel Film, a New App That Finds Movies Screening on Celluloid Near You

7 December 2016 4:52 PM, PST | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

It’s not exactly news that very few films are projected on actual film these days, whether in the local multiplex or the world’s most prestigious festivals. Kodak, who knows a thing or two about film, has created a helpful tool for those defiantly seeking out celluloid wherever they can find it: Reel Film, a website and mobile app that allows users to find movies screening on film near them.

It might not be especially useful for those living outside of cities with vibrant repertory scenes, as inputting a Los Angeles zip code mostly returns results from the New Beverly, Aero and other revival theaters; Reel Film is still a useful way of collating all that information, however, and there are certainly recent releases that buck the digital trend.

‘Ben-Hur’ Leads to $48 Million Write-Down at MGM

10 November 2016 1:03 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Ben-Hur” was one of the summer’s biggest box office flops and the failure of the religious epic depressed profits at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer during the third quarter.

The action-drama about a chariot racer cost more than $100 million to produce and brought in $94 million globally. MGM told investors this week that the poor ticket sales resulted in a $48 million impairment charge for the most recent quarter.

The film and television studio’s revenue increased more than 41% to $299 million, while net income fell from $124 million to $12 million. MGM attributed that dramatic decline in net income to a one-time tax benefit it recorded in the prior-year quarter. When adjusted for the benefit that left roughly a $10 million difference in earnings, it wasn’t all bad news at the film division, which scored a hit with “The Magnificent Seven,” a Western remake with Denzel Washington. It will have to wait longer for those profits to show up. »

Mélanie Laurent to Direct Elle Fanning and Ben Foster in Nic Pizzolatto-Scripted ‘Galveston’

2 November 2016 1:48 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

With two seasons of True Detective under his belt, Nic Pizzolatto is trying his damnedest to break into the feature film side of Hollywood. While he co-wrote this fall’s The Magnificent Seven remake, his longest-developing project is his own adaptation of his 2010 novel Galveston. Once set to be in the hands of Armadillo helmer Janus Metz with Matthias Schoenarts leading, a new creative team has now come on board.

Mélanie Laurent, coming off her excellent, overlooked drama Breathe, will now make her English-language debut directing Ben Foster and Elle Fanning in the drama. Foster leads the “visceral crime thriller set in a boiling cauldron of violence and desperation” as a terminally ill man who is also being hunted down by his loan-shark boss. When one thinks of Pizzolatto, Laurent’s tender, intimate style of filmmaking isn’t quite the first thing that pops in our head, but her involvement »
