“Drops of Jupiter,” Cancer and Blockbuster Video: Chris Kelly on Other People

1 hour ago | Filmmaker Magazine - Blog | See recent Filmmaker Magazine news »

In the opening shot of Other People, a family gathers around the body of its matriarch seconds after she’s passed from cancer. This moment of grief – accompanied by no score, just sobbing — is punctured when the phone rings and a well wisher leaves a message that is interrupted when the caller pauses to place an order at Del Taco. It’s an appropriate introduction to the film – which is sometimes sad, sometimes funny, but always raw, truthful, and uncannily specific. That specificity comes from writer/director Chris Kelly’s own experiences during his mother’s final months, during which Kelly — […] »

The Villian Gets The Spotlight In ‘Doctor Strange’ Deleted Scenes

1 hour ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Marvel Studios always gets criticized for their lack of a strong villain in their films. Outside of Tom Hiddleston’s portrayal of Loki, the rest of the McU films seem to shortchange their villains. What do you remember about Ronan from “Guardians of the Galaxy”? Or what about Malekith from “Thor: The Dark World”? Probably not much. The same can be said about Kaecilius from the most recent Marvel Studios film, “Doctor Strange.” He was there.

The Craft of ‘Moonlight’: How a $1.5 Million Indie Landed Eight Oscar Nominations

1 hour ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

As the A24 logo appears on screen the sound of ocean waves and Boris Gardiner’s soulful 1973 “Every N***r is a Star” comes on the soundtrack. The film then cuts to Juan (Mahershala Ali) pulling onto a quiet, brightly colored residential street in the hot mid-day sun. In a continuous shot, Juan gets out of his car to survey the drug corner he controls. As he converses with one of his dealers and an addict looking to score, the camera swirls around the three men, who fall in and out of frame.

From a narrative standpoint, we are grounded in Juan’s power and control over this patch of Miami, while seeing glimpses of his compassion that will make him the father figure to the film’s protagonist, Chiron. However, that use of sound, movement, light, and color also introduces us to the world of “Moonlight.” Sound and character ground us in the familiar, »

New VFX Reel For ‘Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice’ Highlights The Digital Details Of The Blockbuster Movie

1 hour ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Despite what you may think of the overall quality of “Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice,” I’m sure that most will admit that it was an impressive feat of CGI after watching this 12 minute visual effects reel. The reel covers a lot of huge moments from the film, ranging from the Knightmare sequence to Doomsday’s birth. Yet, the background effects truly stand out as the most impressive. The addition of background characters or digitally manipulated settings is truly a testament to the work of visual effects artists, whose painstaking work is sometimes relegated to a few frames obscured behind the main characters.

Why ‘The Jungle Book’ Will Win Best Visual Effects Oscar

2 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

The VFX Oscar race is over.

The Ves Awards Tuesday night served as a pre-Oscar coronation for “The Jungle Book,” as the innovative Disney hybrid won for outstanding feature, King Louie’s animated performance, virtual cinematography, effects simulations, and compositing.

Yet there were plenty of honors for other Oscar contenders: Peter Berg’s “Deepwater Horizon” nabbed best supporting VFX and model work on the oil rig by Industrial Light & Magic; Laika’s “Kubo and the Two Strings” earned the top animation prize (breaking Disney/Pixar’s five-year reign); and Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” won for its New York City environment (also by Ilm).

However, Ilm’s “Rogue One” came away empty-handed after leading with seven noms. Was this some sort of rebuke for the controversial digital doubling of the late Peter Cushing’s Grand Moff Tarkin and Carrie Fisher’s Princess Leia or just great competition?

A closer look at the categories reveals the latter, »

‘Hidden Figures’ Director Ted Melfi Is Done Making Movies With ‘White Guys In Wigs’ — Consider This

2 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Hidden Figures” chronicles the way a handful of African American women working at Nasa during the height of the Space Race hanged the course of history. But its production also had a profound effect on its director, Ted Melfi.

“It’s changed my life in very, very dramatic ways,” Melfi recently told IndieWire. “I don’t see myself ever doing a film that doesn’t represent the world today, in terms of the cast and in terms of the crew. I won’t touch anything that’s about four white guys with wigs. Ever.”

Melfi surely speaks from a place of privilege — not just as a white male director in an industry that still favors them, but as the director of a film now nominated for three Oscars, including Best Picture — but it’s a promise that was already in action on the set of “Hidden Figures.” The film featured »

The Movies That Changed My Life: ‘Dark Night’ Director Tim Sutton

2 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Brooklyn-based writer-director Tim Sutton makes challenging, daring and experimental films often culled together from micro-budgets. His debut, “Pavilion“, is a coming-of age statement and his follow up, “Memphis”, is a poetically fragmented look at a musician’s drifting life. In his latest movie, “Dark Night,” Sutton continues to prove he’s one of the most fascinating, on-the-rise indie filmmakers working today.

Thought-provoking and unsettling, “Dark Night” is loosely based on “The Dark Knight Rises” movie theater shooting in Aurora, Colorado in 2014.

Berlinale 2017. How Political Is the Berlinale?

3 hours ago | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

Django. © Roger ArpajouThe Berlinale is the most political of the big film festivals. This claim is repeated ad nauseam every year, not least by the festival itself. But is it justified? What does it even mean for a film, for a festival to be political? These were two of the questions put forward in the organizers’ opening speeches at last night’s launch of the Berlin Critics’ Week, an independent program of screenings and subsequent discussions that runs in parallel to the Berlinale. Born as a staunchly cinephilic counterpart to the heavily commercialized main event, the Critics’ Week has made impressive strides in the two years since its inception. The quality of the program has improved each year, and the attendance numbers have risen accordingly. The launch of the inaugural edition had been a modest affair held in a medium-sized cinema, whereas last night’s event took place in a »
