The Buzz: Too bad this action/adventure/monster movie is shaping up to be one of the first Western casualties of Hollywood and China's various movie co-production pacts. Something tells us there are just too many genres at play for American audiences, who aren't used to a certain degree of spectacle and fantasy. Matt Damon will be fine if the movie bombs in the U.S. since it's sure to be a worldwide hit and he has Manchester by the Sea to his producer credit as well as a lead role in Alexander Payne's Downsizing due out later this year.
Fist Fight (2017)- Comedy
When one school teacher gets the other fired, he is challenged to an after-school fight.

The Buzz: Groundbreaking filmmaking this is not, but this movie's trailer sure seems like pure escapism to me. And during a political season that seems to get more intense by the Internet minute, some on-screen hijinx is a welcome bit of respite. This comedy, pitting a well-meaning but outmatched teacher (Charlie Day) vs. a recently fired colleague (Ice Cube), remakes 1987's Three O'Clock High, only this time with faculty. I'm looking forward to a notably entertaining supporting cast, the likes of which include Kumail Nanjiani, Kym Whitley, and a thankfully vigorous Tracy Morgan, whose participation in this comedy marks his first film project since his car accident. - Bret
A Cure for Wellness (2016)- Mystery | Thriller
An ambitious young executive is sent to retrieve his company's CEO from an idyllic but mysterious "wellness center" at a remote location in the Swiss Alps but soon suspects that the spa's miraculous treatments are not what they seem.
Director:Gore Verbinski |

The Buzz: I have watched this trailer several times and although I'm still not quite sure what the film is about I am always left feeling a mix of slightly disturbed and intrigued. It's exciting to see the Gore Verbinski has teamed up once again with cinematographer Bojan Bazelli and it seems they deliver that same creepiness that they captured in The Ring. In fact, the imagery is so gorgeous, this is definitely a film I want to see on the biggest screen possible. - Michelle
Under sandet (2015) - [Limited]- Drama | History | War
A young group of German POWs are made the enemy of a nation, where they are now forced to dig up 2 million land-mines with their bare hands.
Director:Martin Zandvliet |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Martin Zandvliet found his WWII drama nominated for the Best Foreign Language Oscar this year, but I've had my eye on his upcoming project, The Outsider, the story of an American G.I. who joins the yakuza in the wake of WWII. So I'm looking forward to Land of Mine as an introduction to Zandvliet's filmmaking style. - Arno
Everybody Loves Somebody (2017) - [Limited]Comedy | Romance
A successful and single career woman asks her co-worker to pose as her boyfriend at a family wedding back home in Mexico. Her situation gets complicated when her ex shows up at the ceremony.

The Buzz: "How to Get Away with Murder" cast member Karla Souza has appeared in Instructions Not Included and From Prada to Nada, two movies that has successfully found audiences in Mexico and the U.S., and here she gets a leading role in a familiar sounding romantic comedy that will should find a core audience.
Lovesong (2016) - [Limited]- Drama
The relationship between two friends deepens during an impromptu road trip.
Director:So Yong Kim |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Treeless Mountain writer/director So Yong Kim has built most of her stories around two characters trying to connect with one another, and in Lovesong we're treated to Jena Malone and Riley Keough potentially acting on their long-suppressed desire for one another. But you can count on Kim for crafting a story that doesn't feel simple, obvious, or annoying. - Arno
In Dubious Battle (2016) - [Limited]- Drama
An activist gets caught up in the labor movement for farm workers in California during the 1930s.
Director:James Franco |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: You have to admire James Franco's creative ambition, ability to score indie-film financing, and desire to turn every novel he's ever loved into a movie. His latest, a Steinbeck adaptation, has earned comparisons to many well-crafted but ultimately dozy Hollywood prestige pictures.
XX (2017) - [Limited]- Horror
Four short horror films that are directed and written by women.
