Film Feature: The 10 Best Films of 2016, By Patrick McDonald

8 hours ago | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – It’s that time of the film year, the “Ten Best” lists. In representing my 2016 picks – as “Patrick McDonald” – I looked for the emotional experience as much as anything. I think every filmgoer, from the most casual to the ardent buff, adhere to their favorites through that feeling of connection.

There are honorable mentions all over the place, often just missing the 10th spot – I like to characterize them as all tied for eleventh. My favorite superhero film was “Captain America: Civil War,” for the Marvel Comics angst that works best in this genre of movies. The dramas “Arrival,” “Elle,” “Little Men” and “A Monster Calls” were excellent and heartfelt experiences. I loved the wacky tribute that writer/directors Joel and Ethan Coen gave to 1950s Hollywood in “Hail, Caesar!” And after watching it again after initial reservations, I realized and connected to the ardent celebration in the musical “La La Land. »

Golden Globes 2017: Movie and TV Predictions in All 25 Categories (Photos)

Best Motion Picture – Drama Nominees: “Hacksaw Ridge” “Hell or High Water” “Lion” “Manchester by the Sea” “Moonlight” While HFPA members were reportedly fond of “Hacksaw Ridge” and “Lion,” this one looks to be a contest between two critical favorites, Kenneth Lonergan’s “Manchester by the Sea” and Barry Jenkins’ “Moonlight.” When there’s a film in the running that is a clear favorite of critics’ groups – “Boyhood” and “The Social Network” being two recent examples – Globes voters tend to follow suit. For that reason, I’ll go against most prognosticators and say the HFPA will pick the terrific indie film »

Golden Globe Film Predictions: Who Will Win?

9 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The 74th annual Golden Globe Awards are set for Sunday, Jan. 8. Last year brought a list of film winners that kept the Oscar race exciting, from “The Martian” walking away with the comedy motion picture prize to “Steve Jobs” landing a pair of unexpected honors. How will the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. shake things up this year? Academy members will have ballots in hand, and will no doubt be watching with the rest of us.

Here are my picks in the film races. Tune in to see how right (or wrong) I was Sunday night.

Motion Picture – Drama

Most are betting on “Moonlight” here, and indeed, the film is well-liked within the group. But it may be in their minds more than their hearts. “Manchester by the Sea” is lurking, too. But I’m going out on a limb and calling it for “Hacksaw Ridge,” which is very strong with »

Newswire: Jeff Bridges dedicates National Board of Review award to Standing Rock protesters

13 hours ago | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

Jeff Bridges is one of those celebrities who, despite all the accolades and adoration, always seems like a pretty cool guy deep down, because he’s always being cool. And not just in a “I’m aware that this fame thing is kind of silly” way, but also in a “Maybe let me use this fame thing to do something nice” way. For example, as Vulture reports, when he was honored with a Best Supporting Actor award last night by the National Board Of Review for his work in Hell Or High Water, he used the opportunity to stand in solidarity with the protesters at Standing Rock Indian Reservation in the Dakotas.

“I also want to thank all those folks at Standing Rock, and all those people supporting them,” the 67-year-old actor said at the tail end of his acceptance speech. “The movie [Hell Or High Water] deals with the ...

Hollywood Troubled by Trump at National Board of Review Dinner

15 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

After sweeping several categories, director Kenneth Lonergan received top honors at the National Board of Review dinner on Wednesday night for the drama “Manchester by the Sea.” But as he took the stage at Cipriani 42nd Street to accept the award for best film of 2016, he opened the scope of his speech beyond the typical thank-yous.

“We are living in very troubled times,” Lonergan said, alluding to the election of Donald Trump as president of the United States. “How troubled, we don’t know yet.” Then Lonergan offered a remedy in the form of inclusiveness. “We have to stop marginalizing each other,” he said.

It was a theme that resonated throughout the night. In the two months since the election, many have wondered how the mood in Hollywood would shift under a Trump administration. As that question is still being answered, a shadow has been cast over the typically jubilant »

The Writers Guild of America on Wednesday announced the nominees for its annual WGA Awards. Most of the usual suspects were nominated — La La Land, Moonlight, Manchester by the Sea, Hell or High Water and Loving, along with Arrival, Fences, Hidden Figures and Nocturnal Animals. But not all of them were nominated in the category in which you’d expect. And rather than competing against films like Hacksaw Ridge, Silence, Lion or The Lobster, they instead found themselves in the company of the comic book adaptation Deadpool, about as much of a popcorn movie as one could imagine.

What, you may wonder, is going on here?

How ‘Hacksaw Ridge’ and ‘Hell or High Water’ Could Find Oscar Success With Male Voters

4 January 2017 2:16 PM, PST | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

When it comes to the Academy Awards, voters tend to think highbrow. They like to represent the best, most humane, classiest version of themselves.

But don’t forget the Steak Eaters.

The Academy is full of them. They’re red-blooded males (not just American) — often directors, writers, and craftspeople. They’re the guys who voted for Oscar-winners “Argo,” “The Silence of the Lambs,” “Braveheart,” “Gladiator,” “Avatar,” and yes, “Crash” over “Brokeback Mountain.”

“They vote for big movies that make big money, good solid moviemaking with great actors and good storytelling,” one veteran Oscar campaigner told me. In recent years, this faction of the Academy voted for mainstream hits such as Ang Lee’s “Life of Pi,” Alfonso Cuaron’s “Gravity,” Clint Eastwood’s “American Sniper,” George Miller’s “Mad Max: Fury Road,” and A.G. Inarritu’s “The Revenant.”

This year, several movies could get a boost from the Steak Eater vote. »

Leave it to the Merc With a Mouth to muscle his way into Hollywood’s annual awards season, surprising just about everyone in one fell swoop. As the nominations begin to pour in, Tim Miller’s irreverent Deadpool has received nods from the Golden Globes, all the while being shortlisted in both the Best VFX and Makeup and Hairstyling departments ahead of the 89th Academy Awards.

That’s quite the feat for any feature film, let alone an R-rated superhero movie based on one of the lesser-known characters from the Marvel vault. No wonder Ryan Reynolds is so optimistic about the mercenary’s cinematic future.

Now, we can add another nomination to Deadpool’s collection – and it’s a doozy, for Tim Miller’s no-holds-barred actioner has scooped up a nomination for a Writer’s Guild Award, joining Arrival, Fences, »

Deadpool Picks Up A Writers Guild Of America Award Nomination For Best Adapted Screenplay

4 January 2017 1:31 PM, PST | ComicBookMovie.com | See recent ComicBookMovie news »

Deadpool continues to exceed expectations almost a full year after it was released. 20th century Fox's first solo outing for The Merc with a Mouth did a lot better both critically and commercially than anyone could have predicted, and now the Ryan Reynolds-starrer has landed a WGA nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay alongside four much more high-brow movies: Fences, Hidden Figures, Nocturnal Animals, and Arrival. The WGA has nominated comic book movies in the past (The Dark Knight and Guardians of the Galaxy, for example), but this must still be seen as something of a coup for the comparably explicit, somewhat controversial R-rated X-Men spinoff. Does an Academy Award nom beckon next? Might be getting ahead of ourselves there, but it's certainly a possibility. You can check out a full list of nominations below.
