How did a movie so great in every way get beat in the Oscars by garbage

American Beauty... one of the worst and boringest movies ive ever seen. I wouldnt have suggested it to my worst enemy (unless it killed them)

But yet between a great movie and a movie that put B in bad they picked the worst.

I guess you are entitled to your opinion, but I think American Beauty is one of the most perfect films I've ever seen. Conrad Halls Cinematography is a times amazing. Kevin Spacey's change from spineless wimp, to a confident man is fully deserving of his best actor oscar, The score, the constant metaphors. Its a masterpiece.... in MY opinion.

I Sympathise with Lars Von Trier.

Yep, I much preferred American Beauty (not that I disliked the Green Mile at all). Based on the Rotten Tomatoes score, more critics liked American Beauty too, not so hard to believe the Academy also preferred it.

Regardless of opinions though, the OP is simply wrong in saying American Beauty is a bad film. It isn't. If he didn't enjoy it, fine, but it's still an excellent film.

American Beauty is the kind of movie you have to watch multiple times, and each time, as you grow older, you appreciate it more and more.

The first time I saw it I thought it was awful. Then, about 10 years later, I watched it again for whatever reason, and actually liked it.

That's funny you say that, cause I appreciate it less and less over the years. Still an excellent film. I just don't really like any of the characters. Much more complex story though.

Re: How did a movie so great in every way get beat in the Oscars by garb

Agreed. I don't think American Beauty has held up very well. It comes across as a movie that isn't as clever as it wants to be. Possibly it seemed more poignant to a younger me,but it now seems a bit trite.

I do not understand why you have to say one movie is bad in order to like another movie.

Re: How did a movie so great in every way get beat in the Oscars by garbage

I like both films tbh. I would say MCD should've won an Oscar instead of the "gimme' they gave instead to Michael Caine...idk *shrugs*

Re: How did a movie so great in every way get beat in the Oscars by garbage

I've seen American Beauty twice and I have to agree. I don't feel as strongly about it, but I don't like it. There's no way it should have beaten TGM.

American Beauty was more of an Oscar type movie though, so it was always gonna win.

Re: How did a movie so great in every way get beat in the Oscars by garbage

Incorrect, American Beauty was unconventional and broke down the barriers for dark comedies with the Academy. Green Mile was the far more safe, prototypical Oscar-bait film with its noble white saviour themes.
