‘When the Street Lights Go On’ Review: Eerie ’80s Murder-Mystery Blends ‘Stranger Things’ with ‘The Night Of’ — Sundance 2017

22 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Nostalgia may be based in the past, but it’s the future of entertainment. That’s how the media landscape has felt of late, with decades-old film franchises like “Star Wars” coming back to a very prosperous life, revivals like “Gilmore Girls” and “Will & Grace” dominating television, and everything from superhero movies to “Stranger Things” mining our childhoods for fresh material.

So as “When the Street Lights Go On” began and a familiar ’80s melody played over a montage of well-known events from 1983, wariness was the first feeling to set in: Here comes another attempt at manipulating our shared memories into “new” entertainment built on old ideas. But the deliberate and distinctive pacing combined with a uniquely mysterious presentation elevates the Paramount pilot above more overt nostalgia traps. And, more shocking still, its clever blend of on-the-nose songs from 1983 and lesser known numbers of the same year quickly and decisively help ground the pilot. »

Is James Marsden Also In The Mix For Green Lantern Corps?

20 January 2017 12:58 PM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Earlier today, The Wrap reported on a shortlist for Warner Bros.’ Green Lantern Corps. According to them, Tom Cruise, Joel McHale, Armie Hammer, Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Reynolds and Bradley Cooper were in contention for the role of Hal Jordan. The outlet cited an unnamed source as for how they received their information, and while digging for more, we uncovered an additional name that’s said to be up for the part.

Trying to confirm The Wrap’s report, we reached out to a source of our own who’s connected to the studio and asked them if there was any truth to the above shortlist. While they couldn’t provide firm confirmation on the entire thing, they did say that Armie Hammer and Ryan Reynolds were definitely being considered and have been brought up several times already. Then, they dropped this bombshell:

“I’ve heard one more name, too. Ever »

‘Colony’ Review: Season 2 Continues to Challenge Us When We Need It Most

19 January 2017 8:00 PM, PST | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

It’s been a year and a half since the “Colony” pilot was screened at Comic-Con; a year since the show premiered on USA; a month since “Colony” Season 1 was available on Netflix; and a week since the second season debuted. So we’re officially stating now: You have no good reason for not giving “Colony” a chance.  Yeah, “too much TV” is a real issue we all contend with, but this fascinating drama — which grounds a sci-fi premise so deeply in the dirt you’ll leave episodes unsure which world you live in — deserves your attention.

Using Vichy France and other historical occupations as its inspiration, creators Ryan J. Condal and Carlton Cuse’s nuanced drama takes on a version of Los Angeles under “outside rule.” (The show is initially a bit coy about this, but let’s »

This interview has been edited and condensed.

How did you start as a writer?

My first scripted job was writing things for Nickelodeon, working on one of their first scripted shows, Hey Dude. Then I got a job on a network show, Full House. That didn.t work out. I was always working on screenplays..

How did you get the Nickelodeon job?

It.s one of those stories. A friend was playing softball, there was a cute girl there, I became friends with her, then I found out she had a boyfriend. I met the boyfriend, he was editing for Nickelodeon, and he brought me in. They were looking for joke writers, I wrote jokes, »

Zords, Alpha 5 And Bryan Cranston’s Zordon All Feature In Power Rangers Trailer Stills

See Full Gallery Here

Cast your mind back to the moment when Lionsgate debuted the first footage from its upcoming Power Rangers reboot and you’ll no doubt remember a moody, Chronicle-esque origin story featuring Saban’s color-coded heroes.

Designed to uphold an aura of mystery around Dean Israelite’s blockbuster tentpole, it’s also important to remember that that teaser trailer came at a time when many of the film’s VFX shots were still to be finished. How do we know? Because the second Power Rangers trailer slammed online earlier this morning, and it didn’t leave much to the imagination.

Featuring Bryan Cranston’s all-powerful sage Zordon, Bill Hader’s Alpha 5 and those iconic Zords transforming into the even more iconic Megazord, the sizzle reel certainly presented a lot to digest. Thankfully, Lionsgate has rolled out a host of screenshots which, when pulled together, offer a play-by-play »

‘Power Rangers’ Trailer: Bryan Cranston Meets The Team and Tells Them It’s Morphin’ Time

In August, 1993, the live-action superhero children’s TV series “Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers” began airing on Fox Kids and introduced a generation of kids to the adventures of a special team of teenagers, aided by their mentor Zordon, who are tasked to save and protect the world. The original series produced two feature films and a host of video games, but 24 years after the original series first debuted, Lionsgate has a reboot and re-imagining of the original series set for release this year, starring Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Banks and a young cast of new Rangers. Watch the new trailer below.

‘Outlander’ Stars Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan Explain Their People’s Choice Awards Absence in Cute Video

19 January 2017 2:38 AM, PST | Entertainment Tonight | See recent Entertainment Tonight news »

Fans of the hit Starz series Outlander were disappointed on Wednesday night when the cast of the time-traveling drama didn’t attend the People’s Choice Awards, despite picking up several trophies. To explain their absence (and poke some fun at their competitors), stars Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan taped a sweet video, which was posted to the official Outlander account.

“We heard we might have won something, which is amazing,” Balfe, clad in a thick winter coat, said while grinning.

“So sorry to Westworld and Stranger Things, not to rub it in at all,” Heughan quipped, as Balfe scolded him for bragging. “We have some great fans.”

Balfe went on to explain their absence, noting, “We wish we were there. We’re here busy filming that’s why we couldn’t make it. But we definitely have the best fans.”

‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ Eviscerates Manipulative Sitcoms Like ‘Fuller House’ By Making One of Their Own

18 January 2017 7:30 PM, PST | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

Rob McElhenney, Glenn Howerton, and Charlie Day have never been afraid to get a little meta with “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” From “The Gang Recycles Their Trash” (in which plot points from previous episodes were repurposed) to “The Gang Misses the Boat” (a Season 10 episode where the people of Paddy’s Pub decide they’ve drifted too far from their roots), episodes crop up where the “It’s Always Sunny” gang is doing more than comment on society: They’re talking about themselves.

What could come across as unappealingly egocentric is instead charmingly apt considering “Sunny” is all about selfish assholes, and the topic of this week’s episode channels such narcissistic villainy toward a new purpose: highlighting the difference between half-hour comedies and manipulative sitcoms. Similar to the brilliant deconstruction of classic sitcom structuring in “The Gang Tries Desperately to Win an Award” (the lighting! the romantic pairings! »

M. Night Shyamalan Wouldn’t Mind Directing An Episode Of ‘Stranger Things’

Before they created Stranger Things for Netflix and won the hearts of everyone with a login to that omnipresent streaming service, Matt and Ross Duffer worked as writers on Fox’s Wayward Pines. M. Night Shyamalan wants to direct an episode of Stranger Things

18 January 2017 11:00 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

M. Night Shyamalan currently has his latest thriller Split opening up in theaters this weekend [you can read my review here], but his future is something of a blank slate at present. However, in an interview with Digital Spy, the director did lay out one desire:

My boys who do Stranger Things, they did Wayward Pines for me. They were round my house and I was like, ‘Well, you can hire me back guys!’”

Shyamalan’s first foray into television, Wayward Pines, is currently in limbo, although Fox has revealed at the TCA Winter Press tour that the show could get a third season, but it won’t air this year.

Would you like to see M. Night Shyamalan directing an episode of Stranger Things? Let us know in the comments below…

Stranger Things: M. Night Shyamalan Wants To Direct An Episode Of Hit Netflix Series

18 January 2017 10:43 AM, PST | LRMonline.com | See recent LRM Online news »

For well over a decade, it’s been en vogue to sling mud at writer/director M. Night Shyamalan. The filmmaker had a promising enough start to his career, but after making The Village, critical and fan acclaim for his flicks have taken a nosedive. It almost seemed like nothing out there could salvage his career.

However, last year’s The Visit really began to turn around the whole narrative. While it wasn’t an amazing film, it was a movie that could be firmly placed in the “solid” category. Last year saw the premiere of Shyamalan’s latest film, Split, and even moreso, this flick proves that there’s still plenty of juice left for the filmmaker.

But let’s not act like Shyamalan’s been sitting back and doing nothing between 2013’s After Earth and The Visit. He was also Executive Producer on the Fox series Wayward Pines »

M. Night Shyamalan Wants In On Stranger Things Season 2

17 January 2017 6:40 PM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Despite two back to back hits during his early years in the form of The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable, director M. Night Shyamalan hasn’t exactly had a successful career. After those two films, it was mostly one flop after another for over a decade, turning the once great filmmaker into something of a joke. Lately, however, he’s been taking some serious steps to turn things around.

His television series Wayward Pines had an exciting first season, even if it did show its cards too soon and delivered an underwhelming second outing. Then there’s Split, which hits theatres this month and has James McAvoy playing a man with 24 different personalities. Reviews aren’t in just yet, but it certainly seems promising and will hopefully signal a return to form for the director.

Casting his eye towards the future, Shyamalan recently sat down with Digital Spy to discuss his »
