Keanu Reeves to Star in Romantic Thriller ‘Siberia’

Keanu Reeves will star in the romantic thriller “Siberia” from director Matthew Ross.

IM Global is launching international sales at the European Film Market at the Berlin Film Festival. Producers are Gabriela Bacher  and “Passengers” producer Stephen Hamel.

Filming is set to start later this year. Ross, who made his directorial debut with “Frank & Lola,” is helming from a script by Scott Smith.

Reeves will portray an American diamond trader trying to sell blue diamonds of dubious origin to buyers in Russia, where the jewels and his partner disappear. He then journeys to Siberia and begins an affair with a cafe owner.

Reeves stars in the upcoming actioner “John Wick: Chapter 2,” which Lionsgate opens on Feb. 10. Laurence Fishburne also stars in the film, marking their first on-screen reunion since the “The Matrix” trilogy. »

Samantha Morton, Billie Piper to star in family drama 'Two For Joy'

Exclusive: Blonde To Black Pictures to produce UK drama about mental illness and young carers.

Samantha Morton and Billie Piper are attached to star in drama Two For Joy from Sadie Frost’s UK production outfit Blonde To Black Pictures.

The feature, which will chart the challenging relationship between a teenage daughter, her bed-ridden mother (Morton) and her wayward younger brother, will touch on themes of mental illness, young carers and child abuse.

Sadie Frost, Emma Comley and Andrew Green will produce for Blonde To Black Pictures, whose 2015 feature Set The Thames On Fire starred Noel Fielding and Sally Phillips. Also producing are Mat Wakeham and Michael Wiggs.

The film, currently in development, will mark the debut of photographer turned writer-director Tom Beard, who has previously directed music videos for Fka Twigs, Jamie T and Klaxons.

Morfydd Clark joins Dan Stevens in 'The Man Who Invented Christmas'

Screen International Star Of Tomorrow Morfydd Clark has joined The Man Who Invented Christmas.

The project, based on Les Standiford’s book, imagines how Charles Dickens created his iconic story A Christmas Carol and stars Dan Stevens as the author.

Clark will play his wife and joins Christopher Plummer (as Scrooge) and Jonathan Pryce (as Dickens’ father) in the cast.

Bharat Nalluri (Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day) directs from a script by Susan Coyne (Mozart In The Jungle).

The story begins in October 1843 when Charles Dickens was broke. Despite early success, his last three books had failed. Rejected by his publishers, he sets out to write and self-publish a book which he hopes will keep his family afloat. After six fever-pitched weeks, he created A Christmas Carol.

Iffr: Atom Egoyan signs up for 'Rotterdam, I Love You'

Other directors announced for portmanteau film include Paula van der Oest and Koen Mortier.

Atom Egoyan, Paula van der Oest and Koen Mortier are three of the directors who will soon be Rotterdam-bound to shoot episodes of $7.5mn new portmanteau picture, Rotterdam, I Love You. They are due to be announced at a press conference in Rotterdam today (Wednesday.)

This is the latest feature in the Cities Of Love franchise overseen by Emmanuel Benbihy, following on from Paris, New York and Rio. Young Rotterdam director Shariff Nasr is directing the framing story which will link the episodes.

There will be 10 other directors, each helming an episode lasting from 7 to 10 minutes.

The project is produced by Matt Jaems and Joeri Pruys in association with September Film Productions and producer Jeroen Beker. Belgian production company Czar will also be involved as will a number of big name brands. The British coproducer is Gass Man Films.

Michael Pena to Star in Sci-Fi Thriller ‘Extinction’

In a pre-Berlin Film Festival move, Michael Pena has come board to star in the science-fiction thriller “Extinction” with Ben Young directing.

Producers are Todd Lieberman and David Hoberman of Mandeville. Executive producers are Alexander Young of Mandeville along with Nathan Kahane and Joe Drake of Good Universe. Good Universe will launch international sales on “Extinction” at the Berlin Film Festival next month.

Young, who directed 2016’s “Hounds Of Love, ” will direct the title from a script by Spenser Cohen, Brad Caleb Kane and “Arrival” writer Eric Heisserer. The “Arrival” screenplay received an Oscar nomination in the adapted screenplay category last week.

Pena will portray a man beset with a recurring dream of losing his family, followed by a brutal alien invasion of Earth. As he fights for his life, he discovers the strength to protect his family.

Pena will be seen opposite Dax Shepard in the upcoming action-comedy “Chips. »

Canadian Documentary Maker Missing off Florida Keys

The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for Canadian filmmaker and marine biologist Rob Stewart after he went missing during a scuba dive off the Upper Florida Keys on Tuesday night.

Stewart is best known for his 2006 documentary Sharkwater, which debuted at the Toronto Film Festival and explored global shark hunting and its impact on the ocean ecosystem.

‘The Expanse’ Season 2 Review: Syfy’s Boldest Gamble Continues to Pay Out Richly

A few weeks ago, Syfy released the below catch-up video for “The Expanse,” with one of the best conceits imaginable for getting new audiences interested in the sci-fi drama: the events of Season 1, as recreated by cats. (A “recat” video, if you will.)

This video does serve as a relatively basic reminder of the major plot arcs of the first season, but if you think that by watching this you’ll be able to dive into the second season as a new viewer, you probably won’t have much luck understanding what’s going on. “The Expanse” has little interest in easing viewers back into the sprawling  and complicated universe it built over the course of Season 1 — because there’s simply too much story to tell.
