Writer

The University of Virginia’s Miller Center seeks a WRITER to write, copyedit, and oversee production of a variety of internal and external communications, including weekly email updates, monthly management reports, briefing books, and event reports, as well as manage print production of a variety of Miller Center publications.

Responsibilities

  • Create, write, and copyedit content for print and online media, including newsletters, e-blasts, press releases, social media, and other marketing materials
  • Research and write briefs and stories and draft op-eds drawn from the Miller Center’s presidential archives, including presidential oral histories and secret White House recordings
  • Compile, write, copyedit, and oversee production of Director and CEO’s weekly email updates to staff and monthly reports to the Miller Center Governing Council
  • Compile, write, copyedit, and oversee production of participant briefing books for periodic Miller Center conferences and events
  • Draft and copyedit assorted correspondence for the Director and CEO
  • Write, copyedit, and oversee production of various Miller Center print publications
  • Assist in research and writing of scripts for Miller Center videos
  • Perform other writing, editing, and/or production duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • At least two years of experience writing and copyediting material for publication, preferably in an academic setting
  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in English, Journalism, Communications, U. S. history or political history, or a related field
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply Chicago Manual of Style guidelines, including standard American grammar
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply standard editing and copyediting processes
  • Ability to establish and meet appropriate deadlines
  • Ability to handle competing priorities, including competing components of the position
  • Ability to keep careful and accurate records, tracking drafts and sources, for example
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively towards common goals
  • Experience producing or overseeing production of printed materials preferred
  • Knowledge of contemporary American history and politics preferred

This position runs through December 23, 2018, with extension possible, subject to need, performance, and the availability of funding.

Director of Policy and Government Affairs

The University of Virginia’s Miller Center seeks a DIRECTOR OF POLICY AND GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS (DPGA) to conceptualize and execute programming designed to connect scholarship and public affairs. Drawing on the deep scholarly and archival resources of the Center, as well as its long history of engaging policymakers and other influencers, the DPGA will work with scholars, practitioners, and other stakeholders around topics relevant to national governance in order to reveal historical context, examine pertinent questions, and identify critical issues, all with an eye to proposing workable, practical, and lasting solutions. This position will be embedded in the Center’s Presidential Studies programs and work closely with all Center faculty and staff to produce exceptional and engaging programming.

For the coming eighteen months, the DPGA will be responsible for execution of second half of the Center’s First Year project , a multi-year nonpartisan effort to examine the history and structure of presidential First Years, assess the policy opportunities and threats of the next President, and influence the national debate by addressing transition, administration, and congressional officials; opinion leaders; and the public.  More broadly, the DPGA will design and implement a substantive impact agenda that advances the research agenda of the Center’s Presidential Studies programs.

Responsibilities

  • Discern effective ways to incorporate and promote Center scholarship into targeted-audience and public programming

  • Collaborate effectively with Center Director and CEO, Director of Presidential Studies, and other Center leadership in conceptualizing and executing programming

  • Serve as project manager for the First Year project, overseeing the incorporation of scholarship on selected topics, planning and executing public and private events and other activities on the First Year calendar, securing participation of experts in each topic area, developing collateral assets, developing deliverables, and tracking success metrics

  • Design and implement an impact agenda for the Center’s Presidential Studies programs, planning and developing outputs, planning and executing public and private events and other activities, coordinating the work of practitioner Senior Fellows, and developing and tracking success metrics

  • Conceptualize and execute periodic “White House alumni” conferences

  • Conceptualize and execute annual Mortimer Caplin Conference on the World Economy and biennial David R. Goode National Transportation Policy Conference, including working with internal and external stakeholders in crafting conference agenda, securing expert speakers and panelists, and ensuring successful deliverables

  • Execute and/or supervise execution of complex logistics for projects and programs, considering factors such as protocol, security, production (broadcast, audio, and video) requirements, development of pre-conference materials, and post-conference follow up, including post-conference reports and publications

  • Cultivate effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders

  • Participate actively in fundraising efforts for areas of responsibility

  • Develop and manage budgets for areas of responsibility

  • May supervise staff and interns

Qualifications

  • Four+ years of direct, progressive experience in program and/or policy development and leadership required, preferably in academia, politics, or think-tanks and preferably with professional exposure to presidential or congressional politics and/or public policy

  • Bachelor's degree required, advanced degree preferred, in history, political science, public policy, law, or a closely-related field

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, with excellent and engaging skills in written/oral communication required

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with policy-maker and public audiences preferred

  • Demonstrated ability to assemble experts, convene stakeholders, preside over meetings, and make effective and engaging presentations required

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively towards common goals required

  • Demonstrated knowledge of U.S. political history/contemporary politics required

  • Demonstrated ability to handle competing priorities effectively, make judicious decisions under pressure, and maintain the big picture when immersed in details required

  • Demonstrated ability to balance creativity and analysis in developing/implementing a plan required

  • Experience working with university faculty preferred
