Tom Cruise and Ryan Reynolds Are On the Shortlist of Actors for 'Green Lantern Corps'

20 January 2017 7:30 PM, PST

It worked for the X-Men franchise. Ryan Reynolds played Deadpool in a terrible movie that fans hated, but they put X-Men Origins: Wolverine behind them and got him back for a new take on the character, and it was a massive hit. Now Warner Bros. seems to want Reynolds back as Hal Jordan for another go at Green Lantern.   According to The Wrap, the studio has a shortlist of actors they're interested in pursuing for the role of Hal Jordan in Green Lantern Corps, the DC Extended Universe entry that's been described as "Lethal Weapon in space." Reynolds, who played Jordan in the 2011 flop Green Lantern, is on there as are the following mix of actors:  - Tom Cruise, who has not yet been in a superhero...

'The Field Guide To Evil' Introduces a Different Way to Crowdfund a Movie

20 January 2017 6:00 PM, PST

Crowdfunding has always been a mostly one-way street between backers and creators. The backers are essentially preordering a product before it's created. In the case of movies, it almost always means getting a digital download or a t-shirt in exchange for early financial backing. And that's great if you're just a fan who wants to help kickstart a product into the real world. But now there's a new way to crowdfund films, and it's one that turns a contribution into a legitimate investment. Every project is bound to have different terms, but basically, your contribution isn't just preordering some movie schwag, it's literally buying into the film. If it makes it profit, you make a profit. Pretty cool, right? One of the first films to employ...

Comics on Film: A New Spider-Man Swings Onto the Big Screen

20 January 2017 4:30 PM, PST

Here at Comics on Film, we've spoken about our love for Miles Morales, aka the "Ultimate Spider-Man," for a long time. While in the past we've speculated about whether or not the character would make the transition to the big screen in live-action, fans of Miles were given a pretty awesome consolation prize in the form of confirmation that he'll be heading up Sony's in-development animated Spider-Man film, due out next year. One of the coolest things about this news is that it has the chance to provide longtime fans of the character's movies with an entirely new dimension of Spidey's world, especially considering that even immediately upon his debut, Miles was seen as a welcome new perspective on Marvel heroism with deeply relatable...

Note: clip below is Nsfw due to explicit language and bloody violence.   He showed a different side of his acting personality as FBI Agent Albert Rosenfield on TV's Twin Peaks, a forensic analyst with a cutting sense of humor.   In Steven Soderbergh's Traffic, Ferrer was...

19 January 2017 9:30 PM, PST

It’s the start of a new year, which means new resolutions and cold weather (for some of us, at least), but it also means we get to head to the mountains of Park City, Utah for the annual Sundance Film Festival. So why should you care about the Sundance Film Festival? Well some of the year’s most exciting and most talked-about films will premiere at Sundance first. This year’s big awards contender Manchester By the Sea debuted at the festival last year, and not only do they have a great track record when it comes to awards contenders, but many of Hollywood’s next great filmmakers, actors and actresses will be discovered there.  If you are a movie fan, you want to keep an eye on Sundance. And when it comes to this year’s big movies...

Superhero Buzz: The Rock's Black Adam Goes Solo, 'Avengers: Infinity War' Will Visit Many Worlds, and More

19 January 2017 8:00 PM, PST

Whether you're a Marvel junkie or a DC junkie or both, we've got some updates on the big superhero cinematic universes for you:   Black Adam We've been hearing about a Shazam! movie for the DC Extended Universe for a while, particularly as it would involve Dwayne Johnson playing the villain Black Adam. But because Johnson is such a big deal, his baddie is now getting his own separate movie. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Black Adam will be an anti-hero character in the spinoff, though it's unclear if this will happen before or after the events of Shazam!, which is still in the works. It's not mentioned which would be released first, either. For a recap on who Shazam and Black Adam are, check out our guide from...

The Last Horror Blog: 'Split' Talk, 'Phantasm' Box Set, 'The Belko Experiment' Trailer and More

19 January 2017 6:00 PM, PST

James McAvoy and M. Night Shyamalan go behind-the-scenes on Split – I’m cautiously optimistic about Split, the latest genre offering from filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan. The director seems to have regained his footing with 2015’s surprise hit The Visit, and if the trailers are any indication, he looks to build on that with his latest – a tale of an abduction by a man with multiple personalities. The film is slated to open this weekend, so there’s no better time to see what Shyamalan and star James McAvoy have to say about the project in this new behind-the-scenes clip. Enjoy.   Phantasm box set launches in March – If you can’t get enough of Angus Scrimm and those deadly flying silver balls, then you’re in luck – Well...

Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain to Star In Video Game Adaptation 'The Division'

19 January 2017 4:30 PM, PST

Every movie adaptation is bound to have its own unique set of obstacles. That's just what happens when you move from one medium to another. Maybe a comic book's art style is a huge part of its appeal. Maybe a hit book is filled with inner monologues you just can't recreate in a movie. In the case of video game adaptations, the obstacle is what happens when you remove the interactivity from something that is inherently interactive. Thankfully that's less of a problem for The Division, a game that happens to have a fairly open-ended premise that's already primed for the big screen. It takes place in a future where New York City is in the middle of collapse thanks to a viral outbreak that spreads on Black Friday. The U.S. government quarantines the city and...

In Defense of Celebrity Voice Casting: Julia Roberts, Patrick Stewart and Mark Hamill

19 January 2017 3:00 PM, PST

The approaching release of a live-action, all-star version of Beauty and Beast makes us nostalgic for the magical age of the animated original. Disney had kicked off a new era with The Little Mermaid, a wonderful musical comedy featuring a strong female character. Beauty and the Beast was the followup, another musical that was a full-blown romantic drama with comic overtones. What both movies had in common was that their voice casts featured lesser-known stars. That started to change when Aladdin was released; even though Robin Williams only voiced a supporting role, he couldn't help but steal the picture with his hilarious antics. Slowly, the world of animated movies changed, with big stars more and more getting cast in leading roles, even those whose voices are not...

New 'Power Rangers' Trailer Finally Shows Off What You've Been Waiting To See

19 January 2017 1:30 PM, PST

So far the marketing for the Power Rangers movie has been kind of shy about showing off. We got to see the character intros and how they all come across their suits, but the first trailer didn't have any big, full-body shots of the Rangers fighting in those suits. There were definitely no shots of their Zords (which is the name of the vehicles they pilot) or the bad guys they'd be fighting. Basically, we had no sense of it as an action movie, just as a drama about teens that come into superpowers. But now the second trailer shows all of that stuff off and then some.  Fans get to hear and see Bryan Cranston as Zordon. We've got Bill Hader's Alpha 5. We've got Elizabeth Banks totally leaning into her Rita Repulsa role. Oh, and we've even got a...

Watch: These New 'Logan' Trailers

19 January 2017 12:22 PM, PST

This March 3, Hugh Jackman straps on those adamantium claws one last time (or so he says) for the actor's final outing as the X-Men character Wolverine in Logan. This will be Jackman's ninth time portraying Logan, aka Wolverine, in a film (including cameos), and his tenure as the clawed anti-hero dates all the way back to that first X-Men movie in 2000. While Jackman has played Wolverine for the past 17 years, early buzz around Logan signals that it may be his best and more ferocious outing yet. Check out the badass new U.S. trailer. We recently had a chance to watch the first 40 minutes of Logan before having an extensive conversation with its director, James Mangold, returning for his second go-round with the character (he also directed...

Movie News: Michelle Williams to Star as Janis Joplin; Guillermo del Toro Asks: Do You Want 'Hellboy III'?

19 January 2017 12:00 PM, PST

Janis Joplin: Michelle Williams (Manchester By the Sea, above) is once again set to star in a movie about legendary singer Janis Joplin. Filmmaker Sean Durkin (Martha Marcy May Marlene), who was first attached to the project in July 2012, will direct. The project is currently seeking distribution, with shooting expected to start in the spring. [Deadline]   Hellboy III: This past summer, Guillermo del Toro said that a third installment of Hellboy "is a wish that will never be fulfilled [because] the first two movies made really good profits on a market that doesn’t exist anymore." Now, however, del Toro has asked fans to tell him their feelings on a prospective Hellboy III -- by voting either "yes" or "hell, yes" -- and then promised...

'Before I Fall' Trailer Is Like a Young Adult 'Groundhog Day'

18 January 2017 9:00 PM, PST

This week we've already seen further evidence that E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is such a good movie that decades later it still wholly owns the "kids hiding something supernatural from their parents" subgenre. But it's not the only classic sci-fi movie that is still the gold standard for its genre. Groundhog Day will forever own the "stuck in a repeating time loop" genre, no matter how many different ways it's presented. Case in point, the trailer for Before I Fall, which is about to premiere at Sundance. This is basically the young adult melodrama version of Groundhog Day, with Zoey Deutch stuck in the Bill Murray role. Based on the trailer we have no clue why she's stuck in this loop or what she'll do to get out of it. But if we...

Watch the Mysterious Trailer for Sundance Thriller 'The Discovery'

18 January 2017 7:30 PM, PST

The 2017 Sundance Film Festival kicks off tomorrow, and while we wait for the buzz on what's good and what's not we're starting to get first looks at some of the anticipated selections. Today Netflix dropped a trailer for its original sci-fi romance The Discovery, and if it wasn't on your radar before, it will be after you watch.  Starring Jason Segel, Rooney Mara, Riley Keough, Jesse Plemons and Sundance founder Robert Redford in one of his alleged final acting roles, The Discovery is about a love story set in a future in which the existence of an afterlife has been proven and everybody is killing themselves to get there. It seems Segel and Mara are the coupled characters. But that's not entirely clear, as the trailer has nothing to...
