Efm: Lionsgate International to sell Jodie Foster thriller 'Hotel Artemis'

Patrick Wachsberger and his team have added the thriller from The Ink Factory to their Berlin sales slate.

Foster will play a nurse who runs a Los Angeles hospital for criminals and suspects one patient has been sent to assassinate another.

Simon and Stephen Cornwell are producing for their London-based The Ink Factory, which will also finance the feature. Adam Siegel and La La Land producer Marc Platt of Marc Platt Productions also produce.

First-time director Drew Pearce serves as executive producer through his Point of No Return and wrote the screenplay. His writing credits include Iron Man 3 and Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation.

Efm: Seville International boards 'Hochelaga, Land Of Souls'

Shooting underway in Montreal on historical drama features Vincent Perez and French-Canadian rapper Samian.

Anick Poirier and her team will launch sales in Berlin next week on the story that François Girard (The Red Violin) directs from his own screenplay.

Roger Frappier, whose credits include Two Lovers And A Bear and Jesus Of Montreal, produces through his Max Films.

Hochelaga spans 750 years and five stories set on the site of Montreal that link an Iroquoian massacre in 1267, Jacques Cartier’s first voyage in 1535, the purple fever epidemic in 1687, the Patriots uprising in 1837 and brain surgery at the Montreal Neurological Institute in 1944.

Perez and Samian are among an ensemble that includes Naiade Aoun, Raoul Trujillo, Emmanuel Schwartz, David La Haye, Karelle Tremblay, Caroline Dhavernas, Linus Roache, and Sian Phillips.

Globalgate adds partners from Brazil, Colombia

Lionsgate’s local-language venture that launched in May last year has added Paris Filmes and Cine Colombia to 11-strong consortium of production and distribution partners.

The network already includes Televisa, Gaumont, Nordisk, Kadokawa, Lotte, Tobis, Tme and Belga. Globalgate launched on the eve of the Cannes Film Festival 2016 and is led by co-founders Paul Presburger, the Pantelion Films CEO, Lionsgate senior advisor William Pfeiffer and former president of Worldview Entertainment motion pictures group Clifford Werber.

Paris Filmes is the number-one Brazilian distributor of local-language films with an 81% market share and is a leading Brazilian distributor of English-language films including those of Lionsgate. 

Recent releases include Os Dez Mandamentos, Loucas Pra Casar, Minha Mae E Uma Peca and Meu Passado Me Condena 1 & 2.  

Cine Colombia is the top distributor in Colombia on 46% market share and distributes studio, independent and local-language films.

EFM: Katee Sackhoff to star in sci-fi 'Origin Unknown'

Content Media has come on to handle worldwide sales on the project, which is set to begin shooting in London later this month.

Hasraf ‘HaZ’ Dulull will direct from Gary Hall’s script about a Mars mission controller (Katee Sackhoff) who is summoned to assist an artificial intelligence system after the first mission ended in catastrophe.

Her investigation into the first mission leads to the discovery of a mysterious object below the surface of Mars, leading to a discovery that could change the future of Earth.

Head Gear Films and Parkgate Entertainment are financing Origin Unknown and the company’s Phil Hunt and Compton Ross serve as executive producers with UK-based Coffee & Cigarettes.

The latter brokered the deal with Content Media.

Eduardo Panizzo of Coffee & Cigarettes said: “We are delighted to be working with Content Media on this project, they have an exceptional track record and a proven history of success in the sci-fi genre.”

Efm: Picture Tree line-up includes Til Schweiger action-comedy

Picture Tree International line-up also includes Jakob LassTiger Girl.

Picture Tree International (Pti) has confirmed its line-up for the upcoming edition of Efm at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival (February 9 - 19, 2017).

In its fourth year, the Berlin-based sales and distribution company returns with a slate including Jakob LassTiger Girl, which will receive its world premiere as a Panorama Special in Berlin; action-comedy Hot Dog, starring Til Schweiger and Matthias Schweighöfer; and Zaza Urushadze’s (Oscar nominated for 2013 drama Tangerines) The Confession.

Tiger Girl, for which Pti has acquired international rights, is Lass’ second feature, following Love Steaks (2013).

In Hot Dog, Schweiger and Schweighöfer will play two friends who make it their mission to free the daughter of the Moldovan ambassador from her kidnappers.

The film is currently being shot in Berlin and is expected to be released in autumn 2017 by Warner Bros. Pictures Germany.

Goteborg TV Drama Vision: Scandi Sherlock Holmes, script winner details

Hanne Palmquist talks plans for HBO Nordic and Sherlock Holmes heads to Finland.

Goteborg Film Festival’s first Nordic award for Best TV Drama Script, worth $23,000 (Sek 200,000) and funded by the Nordisk Film & TV Fond, has been presented to Nobel screenwriters Mette M Bolstad and Stephen Uhlander.

Nrk’s Nobel is a Homeland-style drama about a Norwegian Lieutenant returning home from duty in Afghanistan who discovers a political conspiracy.

The prize’s jury included Lars Blomgren of Filmlance, producer Gudrun Giddings, consultant Isabelle Pechcou and critic Leena Virtanen.

They said of Nobel: “The script was precise, well-structured and solid. This is a strong, unpredictable drama with a sense of fresh realism. The story was thrilling and worked well also as a metaphor of the global instability between war and peace…This TV series has an impressive complexity in the scriptwriting, no loose ends and no inconsistency. There is no filter to the truth. Tribeca to open with doc about music mogul Clive Davis

Aretha Franklin, Jennifer Hudson, Earth, Wind & Fire to perform in special concert.

Festival brass on Thursday announced that the world premiere of Clive Davis: The Soundtrack Of Our Lives will open the New York event on April 19.

Right after the screening at Radio City Music Hall a concert will take place in honour of the legendary music executive and producer.

The film is based on Davis’s 2013 autobiography and chronicles the historic influence of ‘The man with the golden ears’ who rose from humble beginnings in Brooklyn to become one of the music industry’s most iconic figures.

Chris Perkel directed the film and charts Davis’s journey through Nyu and Harvard Law School to become the president of Columbia Records at a mere 35 years of age.

Davis’s career highlights include his remarkable track record in uncovering talents such as Janis Joplin, Aerosmith, Santana, Blood Sweat & Tears, and Chicago.

Paris-based Alma Cinema has boarded sales on Swedish-Iranian director Milad Alami’s debut Copenhagen-set feature The Charmer about a young Iranian man desperately searching for a local woman who will help him stay in Denmark. 

Ardalan Esmaili stars in the intense psychological drama as the protagonist who finds love with one woman but also falls foul of a man whose wife he has also attempted to woo. 

It marks Alami’s first feature after a series of award-winning shorts including Nothing Can Touch Me and Void, which played in Cannes Directors’ Fortnight in 2014 as a part of the Nordic Factory initiative.

Peter Morgan to receive BFI Fellowship

Writer of The Crown, Frost/Nixon and The Queen to receive honour at annual BFI chairman’s dinner.

British screenwriter and producer Peter Morgan Cbe will be awarded the BFI’s highest honour, the BFI Fellowship, at the annual BFI chairman’s dinner, hosted by BFI chair Josh Berger, on February 21, 2017, at Claridges, London.

Morgan’s writing career includes Frost/Nixon (2008), The Queen (2006), The Last King Of Scotland (2007), Rush (2013) and, most recently, Netflix TV series, The Crown (2016).

The Crown, created and written by Morgan, was the winner of Best TV Drama at this year’s Golden Globes; a second series has been confirmed.

A number of BFI’s Fellows have writing credits to their name, but Graham Greene and Lynda La Plante are the only other recipients who are known principally as writers for television and film.

The film crews behind High-Rise, Rogue One, Victoria and Game Of Thrones scoop up awards at inaugural ceremony.

On Saturday January 28, the British Film Designers Guild (Bfdg) held its inaugural awards ceremony at Pinewood Studios.

The film crews behind films High-Rise and Rogue One and TV series Victoria and Game Of Thrones were among those to scoop awards.

The awards were presented by Bill Nighy and Jeremy Irons, with the latter making a moving tribute to John Hurt.

Liz Griffiths, who produced the event, said: “The quality of the nominations for crew and the high calibre of films and TV productions has proved yet again that the UK is still the leader in this field and that the Bfdg members are central to this amazing knowledge and skill base respected around the world.”

Exclusive: FilmNation has boarded Amazon’s comedy-drama and sequel of sorts starring Steve Carell, Bryan Cranston and Laurence Fishburne.

Less than two weeks after FilmNation struck a $12m Sundance deal with Amazon Studios on The Big Sick, Glen Basner has acquired international sales rights to Last Flag Flying.

Amazon Studios is financing and holds Us distribution rights to the feature, which is in post.

The story follows two former Naval officers who agree to help an ex-con by bringing home the body of his son who was killed in Iraq.

Carell, Cranston and Fishburne portray older versions of the characters played in The Last Detail by Randy Quaid, Jack Nicholson and the late Otis Young.

In Ashby’s 1973 film, Nicholson and Young played Navy officers who befriend a young offender (Quaid) as they escort him to prison.
