Trivia

Famous left-wing politician Tony Benn appears as a character in this film. In real life he fought very hard for Seretse's liberation and became a very close friend of his, but they had to limit his screen time to focus more on Seretse and Ruth's relationship. See more »

An above average romantic period piece
28 November 2016 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

A united kingdom is my second romantic period piece of the week and just like the first allied there are some positives in this film but overall it doesn't hit the heights that I wanted it too. The premise of this film sees a black man get into trouble with his home nation when he marries a white woman in the 1940's. David oyelowo is the lead in this film and he is absolutely incredible in this film, this guy is one of the most underrated actors working today and is truly Oscar worthy in this film. You see the pressure that this man is under in this film and his being judged just because of the woman he wants to marry. You see true progression of his character in this film and you jut want to see him succeed. Fresh off her performance in gone girl Rosamund pike plays his wife an does a really good job in this film. At first I found her character a bit bland but as the film progresses you get behind her character and understand her motivations in this film. Her as oyelowo work really well together and you buy there romance and how it develops. Jack Davenport plays the antagonist in this film and he revels in the role an you can tell he is having fun in the role. You really don't like his character an I feel like he represented how allot of people felt back then. Tom felton who is also on the flash is in this role in a small but important role an he did a good job in this film and I hope he gets more work because I really like the actor. The story is really interesting as you see these two people fight to be together against whole countries and governments. But this film has allot of story elements that I didn't feel were necessary and it seems that they were added as filler, such as elements of Rosamund pikes family and there whole thing. The script has some good dramatic dialogue especially when oyelowo delivers some great speeches in this film. But this film does lack any substantial humour and impactful dialogue that keeps you fully invested in this film. The style of this film is incredibly slow paced and it just didn't work as this film feels like it goes for like 3 hours when it isn't even two hours long. The film feels like it would have been a really good TV movie if thy had cut put the filler and ha it like an hour long but in this format it is just a bit too dull. Overall this film is very educational and interesting but if you aren't interested then this might not interest you.
