Storyline

Outside a movie premiere, enthusiastic fan Peppy Miller literally bumps into the swashbuckling hero of the silent film, George Valentin. The star reacts graciously and Peppy plants a kiss on his cheek as they are surrounded by photographers. The headlines demand: "Who's That Girl?" and Peppy is inspired to audition for a dancing bit-part at the studio. However as Peppy slowly rises through the industry, the introduction of talking-pictures turns Valentin's world upside-down. Written by L. Hamre

Trivia

The film makes use of Bernard Herrmann's love theme from Vertigo (1958) at a climactic moment, but this isn't the first time director Michel Hazanavicius has borrowed from Alfred Hitchcock. He also used visual and musical cues from Vertigo (1958) and from North by Northwest (1959) in his spy spoof OSS 117: Lost in Rio (2009), also starring Jean Dujardin. See more »

Goofs

In a hospital scene (1930 or 1931), Calvin Coolidge is pictured in a photo-portrait on a wall. Coolidge left the presidency in 1929. But of course that fact does not imply that his photo-portrait would never be seen on walls. See more »

Peppy Miller: [trying to pressure the studio into letting her do a film with George] I won't work anymore. It's either him or me.
[Zimmer appears bemused]
Peppy Miller: What I mean is, it's him AND me! Or it's neither of us!
[everybody is still looking at her blankly]
Peppy Miller: Hey, I'm blackmailing you! Get it?

Silence speaks volumes.
16 October 2011 | by (India) – See all my reviews

As I waited for two hours in a long queue to watch this movie at the Mumbai Film Festival, I wondered why I was doing so much for a silent movie, of all things. Post screening, I'm ready to brave hail, rain or the super hot Indian summer sun and stand in a serpentine queue, just to watch this movie all over again.

'The Artist' is sure to go down in history as a must-watch. For those who want to study films, for those who pursue cinema relentlessly, and also for those who just watch movies because they just like to. If you're wondering why a silent film, the movie not only answers it, but makes you fall in love with the medium. it's clearly a product of a thinking director, where every thing in the scene has a story to tell. Whether it's the ironical film posters, street signs, or just a little dog barking quietly in the corner.

I don't need to comment on the talents. The Best Actor award at Cannes 2011 has done that already. I will however mention the four-legged supporting actor in the movie. Best performance I've ever seen so far!

Enjoy this movie. Add it to your collection. This is one movie worth upgrading to from DVD to Blue Ray to ...
