Newswire: Will Smith might star in Disney’s live-action Dumbo remake

8 hours ago | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

Disney’s live-action Dumbo remake may have found its star, with Deadline reporting that Will Smith is in talks to appear in the Tim Burton-directed film. Announced last year, the movie is just the latest in Disney’s recent line of real-world recreations of its animation classics, including The Jungle Book, Cinderella, Maleficent, and this year’s upcoming Beauty And The Beast.

It’s not clear what role Smith would be playing in the film, or what sorts of mean-spirited, big-ear-related jokes he might invite by doing so. The Men In Black star has been in something of a slump of late; he was praised for being one of the better parts of last summer’s Suicide Squad, but his latest, Collateral Beauty, earned a scowl from critics and a shrug at the box office. (Also, he died in the Independence Day universe, which has to feel pretty sad. »

Anna Kendrick in Talks to Play Female Santa Claus for Disney Movie

8 hours ago | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

Anna Kendrick is in negotiations to star in Disney's Nicole, a tale of a female Santa Claus.

Marc Lawrence is attached to direct, while Suzanne Todd, who worked with the studio on Alice in Wonderland, is producing.

Lawrence also wrote the script, whose details are being kept on ice. The twist, however, is that it is a holiday family adventure that centers on the coming of a female Santa.

Disney has done well in the past with tales of old St. Nick, having a hit franchise with the Tim Allen-starring Santa Clause trilogy, which launched in 1994.

‘The X-Files’ Update: Renewal Talks are Progressing, But It’s Not Likely to Return Next Season

11 hours ago | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

Fox Entertainment president David Madden told reporters Wednesday that he had hoped to have an “X-Files” announcement to announce on Wednesday.

But alas, as Fox TV Group chairman/CEO Gary Newman told IndieWire later, a deal with stars Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny, as well as executive producer Chris Carter, continues to be a logistic challenge for the network and sister studio 20th Century Fox TV.

As a result, Newman said he doesn’t expect the show to return during the upcoming 2017-18 TV season.

“My expectation is we will not have something next season,” he said. “It could be Fall 2018 or [Winter] 2019. It isn’t impossible that it couldn’t turn around and happen next year, but the clock is getting pretty tight. There’s no negativity, there’s no issues, I think they’d all like to do it. But it isn’t an easy decision for them. We »

Peter Thiel Thinks ‘Star Trek’ Is ‘Communist’ While ‘Star Wars’ Is ‘Capitalist’

In a wide-ranging interview with the New York Times’ Maureen Dowd on Wednesday, billionaire tech giant Peter Thiel defended his support of President-Elect Donald Trump and offered some characteristically esoteric opinions on everything from Meryl Streep to “Star Wars.” To a question noting that “President Obama had eight years without any ethical shadiness,” Thiel replied, “But there’s a point where no corruption can be a bad thing. It can mean that things are too boring.” And in a rapid-fire sidebar, he also agreed with the president-elect that Meryl Streep is “probably very overrated, especially by all the people who are vociferously. »

It’s been a bumpy fall for Fox Broadcasting Co., with rave reviews but weak ratings for its newcomer “Pitch,” a string of unavoidable preemptions for tentpole “Empire” and challenges in bringing younger viewers to linear screens for live-action comedies. Adam Fields Sues, Says Ryan Kavanaugh Fraudently Lured Him to Relativity

3 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Adam Fields claims that Ryan Kavanaugh fraudulently induced him to take a job as co-president of Relativity Media, in a lawsuit that charges the industry veteran was lied to, ostracized and even physically threatened during his short tenure at the crippled film company.

Fields’ suit against Kavanaugh charges that Relativity “operated closer to the cantina scene in Star Wars than a normal production company,” and that Kavanaugh “grossly exaggerated and misrepresented Relativity’s financial outlook and its ability to produce films.”

The company emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy last April, but has struggled to raise capital and to produce or release films. Mostly employees were furloughed over the holidays and not brought back after the New Year. Kavanaugh and Dana Brunetti, who he hired to oversee the film operation, have both reportedly stepped away from their executive positions at the Beverly Hills-based company.

“The promise of Hollywood has lured thousands of people from around the globe to pursue careers in television and movies,” Feuer said. “Unfortunately, that promise also attracts unscrupulous individuals who would take advantage of those hopes and dreams.
