Dax Shepard & Michael Pena Are On Patrol In First Trailer For ‘CHiPs’

50 minutes ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

While a movie based on the ’70s drama “CHiPs” seems silly, that’s everyone thought about “21 Jump Street” at first, until Phil Lord and Chris Miller showed that it’s possible to really shake the dust off an aging property. And yet, our reservations remain for “CHiPs” mostly because we’re not quite ready to put our faith in Dax Shepard as writer, director and star (but hey, we’d be more than happy to be proven wrong).

Fox’s ‘X-Men’ TV Show: Creator Matt Nix on How He’ll Introduce New Characters and Avoid the Wolverine Question

4 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

As Fox gets close to ordering its pilot set in the “X-Men” universe, creator Matt Nix revealed a handful of details on Wednesday.

The new, as-yet untitled show follows two ordinary parents who must go on the run after they discover their children have mutant powers. The show fits into the “X-Men” cinematic universe to some degree, Nix told reporters during Fox’s portion of the Television Critics Association press tour for “Apb” (which he also executive produces).

“Without getting into specifics, which I’ll get murdered for getting into, I would say that a fan of the movies but also the comic books would not be disoriented at all,” he said. “Where this fits in the mythology, if you look at the movies, which started around 2003 to now, they don’t all line up perfectly. So I’m not slavishly fitting myself into a particular slot. But at the same time, »

5 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Awards season keeps ticking right along, but tonight’s Cinema Eye Honors promised at least a tiny respite from narrative-based filmmaking, as the New York City-set ceremony is all about honoring the best in the year’s documentary filmmaking.

Big winners included Kirsten Johnson’s “Cameraperson,” which picked up Outstanding Achievement in Nonfiction Feature Filmmaking, along with editing and cinematography wins. Right behind it was Ezra Edelman’s “O.J.: Made in America,” which earned Edelman a directing win, along with a production win for Edelman and Caroline Waterlow. Best TV offering went to “Making a Murderer.”

Nominations were lead by Raoul Peck’s “I Am Not Your Negro” and “O.J.: Made in America,” which each pulled in five nominations apiece, though Johnson’s “Cameraperson” and Gianfranco Rosi’s “Fire at Sea” aren’t far behind, with four nominations each. Both Peck and Rosi’s features ultimately walked away without an award. »

5 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

When Thelma Schoonmaker won the first of her three Academy Awards for “Raging Bull,” she humbly told journalists that she believed she was being honored for work done by the director, Martin Scorsese.

“I won the Oscar for ‘Raging Bull’ for those fight sequences,” said Schoonmaker in a 1991 interview with Wide Angle/Closeup. “If you look at those fight sequences, those were so incredibly storyboarded and shot in an incredible way – that is the conception a good director has to bring.”

All below-the-line talent interprets a director’s vision through their crafts, but the editor’s work is most closely associated with the director’s. From 1981 to 2016, every Best Picture winner, except “Birdman,” was nominated for Editing. “Birdman” features long, unedited takes and elaborate camera movements; that might be the only way »
