TNT Renews ‘Major Crimes’ for Season 6

11 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Major Crimes” has been renewed for a sixth season at TNT, the network announced Wednesday. The renewal comes well before the show’s return for the second half of Season 5 on Feb. 22. Season 6 will consist of 13 episodes.

The series, originally a spin-off of network-maker “The Closer,” has been a bulwark for TNT, pulling in 10 million viewers a week across all platforms, according to Turner. Turner Entertainment chief creative officer Kevin Reilly has taken TNT’s creative direction away from the kind of meat-and-potatoes police procedural that marked the networks’ previous aesthetic. Yet even with series like “Rizzoli & Isles” breathing their last and new, grittier series like “Animal Kingdom” and “Claws” coming to populate the TNT schedule, it appears there’s still room for “Major Crimes.”

Major Crimes” follows a special squad within the Lapd that deals with high-profile or particularly sensitive crimes. Led by Captain Sharon Raydor (Mary McDonnell), the squad includes Lieutenant Provenza (G.W. Bailey), Lieutenant »

‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Delayed Again, Casts James Frain

11 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Star Trek: Discovery” will likely miss its previously announced May premiere target, Variety has learned. The series has also cast James Frain as Spock’s father.

CBS released a statement regarding the possible delay:

“Production on ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ begins next week. We love the cast, the scripts and are excited about the world the producers have created.  This is an ambitious project; we will be flexible on a launch date if it’s best for the show.  We’ve said from the beginning it’s more important to do this right than to do it fast. There is also added flexibility presenting on CBS All Access, which isn’t beholden to seasonal premieres or launch windows.”

NBCUniversal to Shut Down Esquire Network Cable Channel, Relaunch Brand as Digital Platform (Exclusive)

10 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

NBCUniversal will shutter Esquire Network’s linear cable channel and relaunch the brand as a digital-only platform, Variety has learned. The decision to end the cable channel’s operation was spurred by recent negotiations with Charter Communications over a carriage-contract renewal.

Esquire Network was dropped last month from At&T’s DirecTV and U-Verse services. That move resulted in a loss of 25% of the channel’s subscribers — down from 60 million to 45 million. If Esquire Network were to be dropped by Charter, it would have lost an additional 15 million subscribers, making it no longer viable for Comcast-owned NBCUniversal to continue to operate.

Esquire Network will continue its cable feed through the summer. The channel employs around 50 staffers. Roughly 30 of those employees will likely be downsized, with the remainder kept on to service the brand’s new digital play.

Sources say that NBCUniversal is not pursuing a sale of the channel, as there are no prospective buyers — nor is »

People's Choice 2017: The Best, Worst and Dwayne Johnson-iest Moments

Ah, the People’s Choice Awards, aka “the one night a year where Hollywood reacts positively to what the rest of the country thinks,” as this year’s host, Joel McHale, noted at the top of Wednesday’s broadcast.

The annual awards ceremony, airing on CBS and hosted by The Great Outdoors star, asks fans to vote for their favorite TV shows, movies and musicians. The winners take home a shiny, crystal trophy. The losers… somehow never seem to show up for the evening. Funny how that always works out, eh?

‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ Eviscerates Manipulative Sitcoms Like ‘Fuller House’ By Making One of Their Own

2 hours ago | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

Rob McElhenney, Glenn Howerton, and Charlie Day have never been afraid to get a little meta with “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” From “The Gang Recycles Their Trash” (in which plot points from previous episodes were repurposed) to “The Gang Misses the Boat” (a Season 10 episode where the people of Paddy’s Pub decide they’ve drifted too far from their roots), episodes crop up where the “It’s Always Sunny” gang is doing more than comment on society: They’re talking about themselves.

What could come across as unappealingly egocentric is instead charmingly apt considering “Sunny” is all about selfish assholes, and the topic of this week’s episode channels such narcissistic villainy toward a new purpose: highlighting the difference between half-hour comedies and manipulative sitcoms. Similar to the brilliant deconstruction of classic sitcom structuring in “The Gang Tries Desperately to Win an Award” (the lighting! the romantic pairings! »

Agents of Shield Season 4 Episode 10 Review: “The Patriot”

Since returning to the second half of it’s fourth season, Agents of Shield has shifted it’s main focus to the Lmd story line. With last week’s reveal of Radcliffe being the main antagonist behind the scenes, it has completely shifted the landscape of the show’s second half and what’s in store. Although Agents of Shield has been doing wonders with this season, it will be interesting to see the show tackle a similar idea to what was presented in Avengers: Age of Ultron. One of the more interesting dynamics that Agents of Shield has established is the one between newly appointed Director Mace and

The reports of Days of Our Lives‘ cancellation may have been greatly exaggerated.

“We don’t make a decision for another couple months,” Greenblatt told TVLine at the Television Critics Association winter press tour on Wednesday. “But I don’t think it’s over yet.”
