The Man in the High Castle Renewed for Season 3, Names New Showrunner

5 hours ago | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

Amazon announced on Tuesday that it has renewed The Man in the High Castle for a third season — and with a showrunner at the helm, to boot.

After Frank Spotnitz abruptly stepped down as showrunner midway through production of Season 2, the dystopian thriller proceeded without a singular boss, operating instead like “a republic,” it was explained at the summer TCA press tour. “We have a system that is working as good as we can make it,” said Ep David Zucker.

For Season 3, however, Bosch executive producer Eric Overmyer will assume the top post. »

In keeping with Celebrity Apprentice tradition, Monday’s premiere summoned 16 relatively familiar faces from all corners of obscurity to compete for camera time. I mean… for a charity of their choosing.

But this being the New edition of the long-running competition show — in which former host Donald Trump has been relegated to a mere executive producer — we also got to spend our first moments with the new head of the boardroom: actor/politician/possible cyborg Arnold Schwarzenegger. He may not have Trump’s business experience, but as a potential boss, »

So far, we’ve seen two films released since Disney‘s acquisition of Lucasfilm, and both have been monster hits: “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” totalled $2.1 billion worldwide, and it looks like “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” will easily cross $1 billion worldwide. Both films were released in December, as will the upcoming “Star Wars: Episode VIII,” which barring some kind of disaster, will also make a billion dollars and then some.

Matthew McConaughey Explains Why He Turned Down ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2’

2 January 2017 7:35 AM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

The half-decade long McConaissance has generally endured because Matthew McConaughey has chosen interesting directors to work with (Richard Linklater, William Friedkin, Lee Daniels, Jeff Nichols, Christopher Nolan, Jean-Marc Vallée, Martin Scorsese, Gus Van Sant, Stephan Gaghan) over blockbuster gigs. Granted, sometimes those non-tentpoles don’t work out, but I’d wager for an actor like McConaughey who has experienced the pain of at least one mega-flop in his career (“Sahara“), it’s easier to move on from something like “The Paperboy” or “The Sea of Trees,” where there isn’t so much money on the line.

Has ‘Hollyweed’ Prankster Been Identified on Instagram?

The prankster responsible for turning the iconic Hollywood sign into “Hollyweed” may have been identified on social media. Zach Fernandez, whose Instagram handle is @Jesushands, is getting support from his followers who believe he vandalized the Los Angeles landmark on New Year’s Day. The videographer and editor has not blatantly taken credit for it, but people are piecing together the clues: Photos from the site show a tarp with the name “Jesus Hands” hanging on the sign’s last O letter, and his latest Instagram update admires the joke from afar. Ryan Reynolds Predicts ‘Logan’ Will Be Oscar Contender

42 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

After the Oscars snubbed “The Dark Knight” in 2009, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences expanded the best picture race to a possible 10 slots, in the hopes of including more commercial titles. But so far, not a single live-action comic book movie has ever been nominated for the top prize.

In this week’s Variety cover story, “Deadpool” star Ryan Reynolds predicts that could soon change after the release of “Logan,” the much-anticipated final Wolverine pic, out this spring. Directed by James Mangold (“Walk the Line”), the R-rated drama is said to be more of a character study — if that’s possible for the genre — as opposed to a straight-up action movie.

“‘Logan’ looks like a movie that might break that glass ceiling,” Reynolds tells Variety. “I know first-hand that it’s amazing. I’ve seen some of it. It’s mind-blowing. It relies a lot on character.”

How ‘Deadpool’ Saved Ryan Reynolds

59 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Ryan Reynolds spent 11 years thinking about what it would feel like to walk in Deadpool’s shoes. So when he finally got to don the red Spandex suit, he’d already worked out the character: His underdog Marvel superhero wouldn’t have Superman’s steely strut but instead would walk with a bounce. “Deadpool is so feminine,” the actor says over soup at a hotel in Bel-Air. “At least in how I saw him.”

The trouble was that the stunt doubles had a hard time dropping the macho swagger. “I’d say, ‘When you land, can you sashay away?’” Reynolds laughs.

This week, Reynolds’ special gait will be on full display on the red carpet of the Golden Globes. “Deadpool” is the first live-action comic-book movie to score a best-picture nomination in the organization’s 74-year-history, competing in the musical/comedy category. And Reynolds is in the running as a best actor nominee, »

10 Directors to Watch: Barry Jenkins Illuminates the Black Experience With ‘Moonlight’

1 hour ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Serious cineastes started to watch Jenkins as far back as 2008, when the Florida State U. grad made a black-and-white feature called “Medicine for Melancholy” on a budget of about $15,000. That bittersweet debut premiered at SXSW, landing him an agent at CAA and a deal with Focus Features. But it wasn’t until Jenkins resurfaced eight years later with “Moonlight” that the rest of the world suddenly took note of his talent.

After the frustration of working on a couple movies that never got made, Jenkins — who got by doing shorts and branded content in the interim — decided to scale back and tackle a more personal project, adapting an unproduced play by fellow Miami native Tarell Alvin McCraney. “We grew up in the same neighborhood and went to some of the same schools,” says Jenkins, whose “eureka moment” was inspired by the Hou Hsiao-Hsien film “Three Times,” deciding to divide »

10 Directors to Watch: Geremy Jasper Finds Fresh Beat in Sundance-Bound ‘Patti Cake$’

Premiering in competition at Sundance, Jasper’s crowd-pleasing debut “Patti Cake$”follows a girl from New Jersey with big dreams of hip-hop stardom — a character close to the writer-director’s heart: “I was a chubby, blond Jersey kid writing raps and making an ass of myself at talent shows,” he says.

Coming from a feature-film rookie best-known for such music videos as Florence + the Machine’s “Dog Days Are Over,” it’s an ambitiously eclectic story, for which he also wrote some 15 songs, from hip-hop to hair metal, as well as the score. Although he studied film history at Wesleyan (where he met Benh Zeitlin, who went on to direct “Beasts of the Southern Wild”), Jasper initially imagined himself as a musician. But stints in a series of bands, including New York City group the Fever, and a New Orleans gig working with the nonprofit arts collective Court 13 (collaborating on »
