Joel and Ethan Coen Tackle TV with Western Anthology ‘The Ballad of Buster Scruggs’

8 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

The Coen brothers are taking another stab at the TV biz.

Joel and Ethan Coen are developing the limited series “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” through Annapurna’s new TV division. The Coens wrote the script and will direct the project, which Annapurna describes as a “Western anthology.”

The Coens were given executive producer credit on FX’s “Fargo,” but were not actually involved in the development or production of that series (which was loosely inspired by their iconic film).

“Buster Scruggs” reps the latest attempt by the Coen brothers to move into TV, a trend that has increased in recent years among auteur filmmakers. In 2011, the Coens developed the hour-long single-camera comedy “HarveKarbo” for Fox. The project, which they co-created with Phil Johnston, was developed through Imagine TV but ultimately didn’t move forward.

‘Legion’ Showrunner Addresses X-Men Crossover Potential

8 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Shared universes in TV and film have become more and more common over the years, specifically when it comes to the superhero genre.

When FX announced it was developing “Legion,” a story about troubled man David Haller (Dan Stevens) who struggles with mental illness for years before learning the voices and visions he hears and sees may be real, for the small screen it seemed the X-Men franchise would be expanding as well. Would it follow the lead of the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, which connect to ABC’s “Agents of Shield” and Netflix’s “Daredevil,” “Jessica Jones,” and “Luke Cage”? Showrunner Noah Hawley apparently has other plans. He spoke with Entertainment Weekly about whether a crossover will in the cards.

“I’m firm believer the show has to stand on its own two feet,” Hawley said. “For a crossover to be possible we have to earn that right through the quality of our storytelling and hopefully »

‘American Crime’ Creator John Ridley Focuses on Immigration in Season 3: ‘That Conversation Is Not New’

7 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The third season of ABC’s critically acclaimed series “American Crime” will explore labor issues.

Set in North Carolina — where, last year, the issue of Lgbt rights dominated the headlines — the new season of John Ridley’s anthology series will focus on workers’ rights, reproductive rights, human trafficking, and immigration.

The inclusion of immigration issues made its way into the “American Crime” writers’ room long before the 2016 election, which saw Donald Trump named President-elect of the United States, following inflammatory comments made about Mexican immigrants during his campaign.

“We started production on this way before the election,” Ridley said on Tuesday at the Television Critics Association press tour in Pasadena, Calif.

Addressing Trump-prodding reporters in the room, Ridley said, “I know there have been a lot of questions…based on what’s happened over the past couple of months since November.” He added, “The urgency that I approach storytelling, the issues that are out there have been »

‘Arrival,’ ‘xXx,’ ‘Sing’ Get China Release Dates, ‘La La Land’ Heads for Valentine’s Day

2 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

A slew of Hollywood movies has secured release dates in the crucial mainland Chinese market. Their box office prospects, however, are unclear given their proximity to each other and the current malaise among Chinese cinema-goers.

Biggest among the confirmed new titles, Donnie Yen-starring “xXx: The Return of Xander Cage” will release in China on Friday Feb. 10, some three weeks after its North American outing. It may benefit from being the first major Hollywood title to release into the market after the Chinese New Year holidays, which are usually reserved for Chinese-language fare.

(One exception this year to the normal blackout is French-Canadian co-production “Ballerina,” getting a Feb. 1 release. Local distributor Hishow told Variety that it is preparing a release with 6,600 DCPs.)

Before Chinese New Year kicks off on Jan. 28, brainy thriller “Arrival” has been given a Jan. 20 release. Like Sony’s “Passengers,” which was belatedly given a Jan. 13 slot, »
