Lionsgate executives touted their upcoming movie slate to investors, focusing primarily on “Power Rangers,” “Robin Hood,” and “Kingkiller Chronicle,” on Tuesday during the company’s inaugural Investor Day.

La La Land” won a record seven Golden Globes on Sunday and has already grossed almost $52 million at the U.S. box office after only a month in limited release. The musical is playing at 1,515 North American locations and is expanding its run in coming weeks.

“We’re embracing unique filmmaker visions and are the first port of call,” said motion picture group president Erik Feig.

Lionsgate is also handling the release of Mel Gibson’s “Hacksaw Ridge,” which has topped $65 million at the domestic box office. The solid performances have helped reverse momentum at the studio, which saw under-performances by “The Divergent Series: Allegiant” and “Gods of Egypt.”

‘Handmaiden,’ ‘Bovary,’ ‘Train’ Lead Asian Film Awards Nominations

1 hour ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Korea’s “The Handmaiden” leads the nominations for the Asian Film Awards, which took a strongly North East Asian tilt this year. Feng Xiaogang and his socio-political drama “I Am Not Madame Bovary” ranked second among the nominees.

The Afa nominations were announced Wednesday in Hong Kong. The prizes will be presented on March 18 at a ceremony that returns to Hong Kong after excursions in previous years to Macau.

Lesbian fantasy drama “The Handmaiden,” which debuted in Cannes competition, earned six nominations for performance and design, but Afa selectors omitted the celebrated Park Chan-wook from the best director category. Nor was the film was among the five best picture nominees.

In the running for best picture are “The Wailing,” and “The Age of Shadows” from Korea, “Harmonium” from Japan, “Godspeed” from Taiwan, and China’s “Bovary.”

‘Arrival,’ ‘xXx,’ ‘Sing’ Get China Release Dates, ‘La La Land’ Heads for Valentine’s Day

2 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

A slew of Hollywood movies has secured release dates in the crucial mainland Chinese market. Their box office prospects, however, are unclear given their proximity to each other and the current malaise among Chinese cinema-goers.

Biggest among the confirmed new titles, Donnie Yen-starring “xXx: The Return of Xander Cage” will release in China on Friday Feb. 10, some three weeks after its North American outing. It may benefit from being the first major Hollywood title to release into the market after the Chinese New Year holidays, which are usually reserved for Chinese-language fare.

(One exception this year to the normal blackout is French-Canadian co-production “Ballerina,” getting a Feb. 1 release. Local distributor Hishow told Variety that it is preparing a release with 6,600 DCPs.)

Before Chinese New Year kicks off on Jan. 28, brainy thriller “Arrival” has been given a Jan. 20 release. Like Sony’s “Passengers,” which was belatedly given a Jan. 13 slot, »

Japan Box Office: ‘Resident Evil,’ ‘Yokai Watch’ Sequels Share Holiday Honors

2 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Tokyo – “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter” took $2.5 million on 186,000 admissions to be the highest earner in Japanese theaters over the three day holiday weekend. (Local charts show which count admissions rather than revenue, place it second.)

As of Jan. 9 the film has made $28.5 million, compared with the $33 million final total of the series’ previous entry, the 2012 “Resident Evil: Retribution.”

“Yo-Kai Watch the Movie: The Flying Whale and the Grand Adventure of the Double Worlds, Meow!,” the third in a feature animation series based on a popular role-playing game, in its fourth weekend on release.

After falling to number five last weekend, the film earned $1.95 million from 194,000 admissions for the Jan. 7-8. With Toho distributing, the film has driven its cumulative to $17 million.

Hanging onto the number three rung was Toho’s megahit animation “Your Name,” which boosted its total to $198 million as of Jan. 9.

‘Monster Trucks’ Review: This Kid-Friendly Creature Feature Drafts Off A Dozen Better Movies

4 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

The story of a hunky high school senior who discovers an oil-guzzling sea beast (think “Sesame Street” meets the Kraken), and then knots its tentacles around the chassis of his custom jalopy in a perverse attempt to pimp his ride, “Monster Trucks” seems like such an impossibly stupid idea for a movie that it’s easy to forget how it derives from a rather proud history of Hollywood entertainment. After all, there have been any number of studio spectacles about a young boy, or a teenage boy, or — in this case — an obviously grown-ass man doing a hilarious job of pretending to be a teenage boy — whose frustrated small town existence is turned upside down when he befriends a strange and unexpectedly sweet creature that teaches him about growing up or whatever. “Monster Trucks,” however aimless and confused it may be, rolls down a road paved by verified hits like “E.T., »

President Obama’s Farewell Address: The Best Motivational Speech TV Has Ever Seen

5 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Over the course of his eight-year term, discussion surrounding President Barack Obama’s speech-making skills has always touched on one recurrent point: The man knows how to inspire. His speeches are legendary both for their content and craft, with nearly everyone in agreement over his extraordinary oratory capabilities.

So heading into the president’s farewell address Tuesday evening, a disheartened nation looked once more for that motivation, that inspiration, that secret power only the best speeches contain — the ones usually given by fictional TV presidents, and rarely matched by their real-life counterparts.

Panasonic GH5 Raises the Bar with 6K and Much More

5 hours ago | Filmmaker Magazine - Blog | See recent Filmmaker Magazine news »

Panasonic’s GH4 has been a hit with documentary and low-budget indie filmmakers thanks to its small size, internal 4K recording and low cost. But it’s now over two and a half years old, and in today’s world that can be a lifetime for a camera. Fortunately, Panasonic has a replacement coming that looks like it could be as popular as the GH4, not only because it improves on the original capabilities but because it also marks a first step to 6K capture. Panasonic first teased the GH5 in September, but at CES they announced the feature list, along with planned […] »

Joel and Ethan Coen Tackle TV with Western Anthology ‘The Ballad of Buster Scruggs’

8 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

The Coen brothers are taking another stab at the TV biz.

Joel and Ethan Coen are developing the limited series “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” through Annapurna’s new TV division. The Coens wrote the script and will direct the project, which Annapurna describes as a “Western anthology.”

The Coens were given executive producer credit on FX’s “Fargo,” but were not actually involved in the development or production of that series (which was loosely inspired by their iconic film).

“Buster Scruggs” reps the latest attempt by the Coen brothers to move into TV, a trend that has increased in recent years among auteur filmmakers. In 2011, the Coens developed the hour-long single-camera comedy “HarveKarbo” for Fox. The project, which they co-created with Phil Johnston, was developed through Imagine TV but ultimately didn’t move forward.
