TVLine's Performer of the Week: Fargo's Jean Smart

21 hours ago | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

The Performer | Jean Smart

The Show | Fargo

The Episode | “Fear and Trembling” (Nov. 2, 2015)

The Performance | On a TV landscape littered with Black Canaries, Mockingbirds and other badass women, it’s 61-year-old Floyd Gerhardt who has us shaking in our shoes, courtesy of three-time Emmy winner Smart.

In the opening weeks of the FX series’ second season, we saw hints of Floyd’s formidability as the Gerhardt crime family matriarch, newly thrust as she was into a position of leadership after husband Otto’s stroke. But it was when she sat down to present a “respectable” counteroffer to Kansas City, the »

Did 'Walking Dead' Season 6 Cast This 'Deadwood' Star as Negan?

5 November 2015 6:05 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead comics have provided fans with a slew of memorable heroes and villains over the years, many of which have been brought to life on the massively-popular AMC TV series. There is one character, however, that fans have been clamoring for more than anyone else, the brutal villain Negan. Showrunner Scott M. Gimple has always played coy about whether or not Negan will surface at some point this season, and a casting call from September seemingly teased that the producers were searching for the right actor to play him, even though this particular character was named Rich. Today we add another mysterious piece to the Negan puzzle, which comes from actor Garret Dillahunt, who tweeted a photo of his "reading material," The Walking Dead Compenium #3, the same volume where Negan first appears.

Naturally, a photo of a comic book is far from any sort of casting confirmation. »

The Walking Dead Season 6 Episode 4 Review – ‘Here’s Not Here’

Oli Davis reviews The Walking Dead Season Six, Episode 4…

Here’s Not Here.

Directed by Stephen Williams.

Written by Scott M. Gimple.

“This is a stick up.”

Is now really the time for an extended, 90-minute Morgan flashback story? The last few episodes have been marvellously ratcheting up the tension, cutting between the approaching zombie horde and Wolves-led invasion of Alexandria. What happened to Rick’s camper van being overrun with Walkers? Is Glen alive? How did Carol’s cake taste? This would’ve been perfect for the season’s second-half opener. Not now.

That said, Lennie James. For a whole episode. From pointy stick to blunt stick. It’s tough to complain.

He begins two years ago as Crazed Morgan, wildly lunging at zombies that aren’t there and painfully yelling ‘Kill Me’ over and over again to his eventual captor. By the end of the episode, we have »

The Walking Dead season 6 episode 4 review: Here's Not Here

The Walking Dead season 6 takes a solid, but frustrating, breather from the main tale to explain how Morgan got his groove back...

This review contains spoilers.

6.4 Here's Not Here

We've seen Morgan at every stage of his post-apocalyptic life. We've seen the father struggling to keep life normal for his son in walker-haunted King County. We've seen the schizophrenic, trapped in a lair of his own making, muttering about clearing in between homicidal outbursts. We've seen the walking ronin, trailing after Rick and company. Now we've seen Morgan the born-again pacifist, letting Wolves go free and avoiding killing thanks to his strong moral code. However, we haven't seen what takes Morgan back from the brink and restores his humanity to him. This is the episode that fills in those gaps.

We know where we're starting, and we know where we're ending up. There's a certain path that has to be followed, »

The Walking Dead, Season 6, Episode 4, “Here’s Not Here”

The Walking Dead, Season 6, Episode 4, “Here’s Not Here”

Written by Scott M. Gimple

Directed by Stephen Williams

Airs Sundays at 9pm (Et) on AMC

I understand what the producers wanted with this episode, in that they stop the entire momentum of the first few installments in order to soothe viewers into a calmer, more complex storyline, but “Here’s Not Here” is definitely this season’s “Slabtown.” I’m sure I speak for many when I say that I wanted to see how Morgan came back from clearing, how he learned to fight with a stick, and become such a Zen warrior, but not now. Not right this minute. In the end, I couldn’t help but feel like the producers were just treading water and painfully drawing out the bigger questions.

What is happening outside of Alexandria? What’s going on inside Alexandria? Give us something. You can’t play these games, »

Why tonight's very good 'The Walking Dead' suffered from very bad timing

1 November 2015 7:30 PM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

A review of tonight's "The Walking Dead" — and still more thoughts on last week's controversy — coming up just as soon as I give you a rabbit's foot... "I have come to believe that all life is precious." -Eastman There are two ways to talk about "Here's Not Here." One is within the context of the episode itself: a  sequel to the last Morgan spotlight episode, "Clear," a fine acting showcase for both Lennie James and guest star John Carroll Lynch, and a thoughtful meditation on the value of life and death, even in the world of the zombie post-apocalypse. In that context, it was a very good episode, albeit one that stacked the deck too much in favor of Eastman's argument. And we can talk about that in a bit. But the other way to discuss the episode is in the larger context of the season, and particularly in the »

The Walking Dead Recap: Morgan's Backstory Reveals How He Became Such a Badass

1 November 2015 4:35 PM, PST | Us Weekly | See recent Us Weekly news »

The latest episode of The Walking Dead was a 90-minute affair, the better to fully explore Morgan's (Lennie James) backstory. (That’s right, there was no more about Glenn. Sorry!) It was also a quiet, focused episode in which a lot went on without much happening, letting the full weight of its story sit on the capable shoulders of James and guest star John Carroll Lynch in one of the best onscreen pairings in the show's history. Here's how Morgan got from there to "Here's Not Here." Beginning at the [...] »

'The Walking Dead' Season 6, Episode 4 Recap: The Cheese Stands Alone

1 November 2015 2:30 PM, PST | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

As "Walking Dead" showrunner Scott Gimple scolded us all last week, answers about what may or may not have happened to our beloved Glenn are forthcoming -- but we're going to have to wait awhile. The exasperated executive producer instead encouraged viewers to look at this season of the show as a movie or a book, with different reels/chapters that need to be viewed together to make a cohesive whole. So this week, we were served a Morgan-centric chapter that filled in some of our wayward traveler's back story, but did little to propel the plot of our main chain of events. It's an episode that fans are bound to either love or hate; I found myself somewhere in the middle.

"Here's Not Here" focuses on Morgan's fateful meeting with a man named Eastman, played to perfection by character actor John Caroll Lynch (who you may recognize from "Fargo, »

American Horror Story Hotel episode 4 review: Devil's Night

America's serial killers come out to play in American Horror Story Hotel's latest Halloween episode, Devil's Night...

This review contains spoilers.

5.4 Devil's Night

The announcement that Lady Gaga would play a prominent role in American Horror Story: Hotel was a bit of a divisive one. She was the centerpiece of a lot of the show's commercials, particularly one of her set to the memorable industrial tune Du Hast by Rammstein. No one knew what role she would play, or what her purpose would end up being, but everyone had an opinion about it, and most of those opinions seem to have been negative. It's easy to see why; Gaga's a pop star, not an actress. If she's been on stage or screen, it's been in the context of her musical talents first and foremost, not her ability to emote or cry on cue. I have to admit to having been pleasantly surprised. »

‘American Horror Story: Hotel’ Recap: ‘Devil’s Night’ Brings Out Real-Life Serial Killers

28 October 2015 9:19 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Spoiler warning: Do not read on unless you’ve seen episode 4 of “American Horror Story: Hotel,” titled “Devil’s Night.”

American Horror Story” revels in its Halloween episodes; after all, it is a horror show in prime October scheduling. And while episode four of “Hotel,” “Devil’s Night,” was a bit shorter than the previous episodes this season, it brought out some very devious special guests.

Some of America’s biggest serial killers — Aileen Wuornos, John Wayne Gacy, Jeffrey Dahmer — made appearances at the Hotel Cortez. The most unexpected turn, though, seemed to be the apparent takedown of the country’s fascination with the murderers near the end, as James March (Evan Peters) praised them for living his “American Dream.”

But first thing’s first: Holden is home. Alex Lowe (Chloe Sevigny) finally got her wish and her beloved son is returned to her after she found him at the Hotel Cortez. »

For our latest Q&A feature, we recently caught up with Major, who discussed working with Melissa McBride and Andrew Lincoln, his time on American Horror Story: Freak Show, and much more.

Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Major. You do a great job playing Sam Anderson on The Walking Dead. Were you a fan of the show before joining the cast?

Major Dodson: I had only seen one episode on a plane TV during a trip, and it was an episode where a lot of people died. After I was cast as Sam, my entire family started watching from episode one and now we all are huge fans!

Review: American Horror Story: Freakshow

8 October 2015 4:10 PM, PDT | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

Exploring ideas of the American dream seems to be an occurring theme in every season of American Horror Story. Murder House dealt with a family trying keep their nuclear household together by moving into a new home, despite its dark past. Their neighbor, Constance, is a failed actress who yearns to be worshiped. Asylum revolves around Lana Winters attempts to hit the jackpot uncovering the behind the scenes horrors of Briarcliff Manor. Coven sees Supreme Witch Fiona Goode going through murderous antics to maintain her beauty and, most of all, her power. In the fourth season, Freakshow, now available on blu-ray and DVD, Jessica Lange returns is what is said to be her final role in the series as Elsa Mars, the manager of a troubled freak show in the 1950s with a desire for fame at any cost.

Elsa’s freak show is an impressive ensemble played by actual “freaks” for the most part. »

Your Friends & Neighbors: Kusama’s Enjoyably Tense Cult Thriller

Since premiering her phenomenal, Michelle Rodriguez starring indie debut Girlfight in 2000, Karyn Kusama hasn’t lived up to early prognostications. One of the few women directors with a big budget studio effort to her name, the ill-fated Aeon Flux (2005), starring a post-Oscar Charlize Theron, followed by the highly anticipated horror film, Jennifer’s Body, written by Diablo Cody (unfortunately less revisionist than one would have hoped for), the director unfortunately been unable to showcase her talents with these critically lambasted mainstream titles.

The Invitation, re-teams with her Aeon Flux (2005) writers Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi (recently responsible for the Kevin Hart/Ice Cube film Ride Along) for a much more enjoyable passion project. Featuring a cast of bright young Los Angeles actors we’ve seen filtered through a number of American indie films, Kusama builds intense atmosphere atop familiar foreboding for »

‘American Horror Story’: How Costume Designer Lou Eyrich Created the ‘Freak Show’

8 September 2015 6:30 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Crafting a circus full of freaks was quite the ride for creative the team behind “American Horror Story,” but with consecutive nods for outstanding costuming, hair styling, makeup and prosthetic makeup, ever since the limited series’ offset at the 2012 Creative Arts Emmys, the “Freak Show” was in good hands with Ryan Murphy’s below-the-line team.

Starting over each season is both a blessing and a curse,” admits costume designer Lou Eyrich, the 2014 Emmys reigning champ.

In anticipation of “American Horror Story’s” 2015 Emmy fate, Eyrich spoke to Variety about perfecting creepy costuming for the limited series’ fourth installment.

What are the challenges that come with changing the look season-to-season in an anthology series?

Prep is more intense, as creating each character takes time and often multiple fittings. However, creatively, it’s exciting to create a new look for actors you have been working with for several seasons. You never get bored. »
