Superhero Buzz: First Look at 'Thor: Ragnarok,' Plus: 'Spider-Man' and 'Black Panther' News

Thor: Ragnarok

With Doctor Strange successfully launched, Marvel can now return its attention to teasing its upcoming slate. which is actually quite diverse as far as superhero movies go. In the first tease, we have our first official look at Thor: Ragnarok (above).

Rather than a production still, it's a photo from behind the scenes, featuring director Taika Waititi and star Chris Hemsworth (aka Thor), which is an interesting choice. Marvel previously shared an off-the-wall video that explained why Thor wasn't in Captain America: Civil War; more recently, Waititi shared a behind-the-scenes video from the first day of production in October

Given Waititi's resume as a filmmaker who knows how to blend humor with heart -- see, for example, last year's excellent Hunt for the Wilderpeople -- It's reasonable to assume that Thor: Ragnarok will display a more buoyant spirit than Thor: The Dark World. But fear not, action fans, for Marvel has also shared a new synopsis that promises a healthy share of fierce battles:

“In Marvel Studios’ Thor: Ragnarok, Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok -- the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization -- at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela. But first he must survive a deadly gladatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger --  the Incredible Hulk!”

Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba, Jeff Goldblum, Tessa Thompson, Karl Urban, Mark Ruffalo and Anthony Hopkins also star. Thor: Ragnarok will stomp into theaters on November 3.

The People v. O.J. Simpson / Sterling K. Brown

Marvel also released casting news about Black Panther that should prove especially interesting for those who saw the exceptional FX series The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story. Sterling K. Brown, who gave an Emmy-winning performance as attorney Christopher Darden, will now lend his talents as a "figure from T’Challa aka Black Panther’s past."

We don't know much about the role, but Brown can currently be seen in the popular TV show This Is Us. He joins Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Forest Whitaker, Lupita Nyong’o, Angela Bassett, Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya, Winston Duke and Florence Kasumba.

Black Panther will open in theaters on February 16, 2018.

Finally, we've seen the new Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War, so we know his suit is different than in the past. The changes are broken down quite nicely in a new motion graphic.

We expect to learn more when Spider-Man: Homecoming spins its way into theaters on July 7.
