‘Blade Runner 2049’ Helmer Denis Villeneuve Eyed to Direct ‘Dune’ Reboot

Even though he has a film in Oscar contention and another in production, “Blade Runner: 2049” director Denis Villeneuve looks ready to jump into another classic fixture in the sci-fi world.
Sources tell Variety that Villeneuve is in early talks to direct Legendary’s “Dune” reboot for the company. Legendary has not commented on the news.
Prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, Legendary closed a deal to the rights with the Frank Herbert estate for his iconic novel granting the production entity not only rights to film but also TV-based projects on the sci-fi property.
The projects would be produced by Thomas Tull, Mary Parent and Cale Boyter, with Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt, and Kim Herbert serving as executive producers.

Animated holiday film Sing earned $1.7 million in Tuesday night previews at the North American box office, enough to beat Assassin's Creed and Passengers.
The trio of titles are opening everywhere Wednesday in advance of the long Christmas weekend.
Among the three, Illumination Entertainment and Universal's Sing has the best shot of toppling holdover Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, although many are betting on the latter to stay No. 1. On Tuesday, Lucasfilm and Disney's Rogue One topped the chart for the full day with nearly $18 million.

Martin Scorsese’s passion project “Silence” is finally completed and will be released this week. Now, the director is turning his attention to another project, which will reunite him once again with Leonardo DiCaprio.
The duo will next be working together on an adaptation of Erik Larson’s book “The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America.” DiCaprio purchased the film rights to the book in 2010 and now the feature is finally in motion.
“Right now, there is a script being worked on,” Scorsese told Sun Media. “One of the things that I had to stop for the past six months [to complete ‘Silence’] was my meetings on that script. They want me to start again in January and see if we can find a way because it’s an extraordinary story.”

Dick Van Dyke will appear in the upcoming “Mary Poppins” sequel, Disney confirmed on Tuesday.
The veteran actor played both the chimney sweep, Bert, and the bank chairman Mr. Dawes Senior in the 1964 original, starring opposite Julie Andrews.
The film won five Oscars in 1965 including a best original song awards for “Chim Chim Cher-ee,” performed by Dyke in the movie. The song was penned by dynamic duo Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman, otherwise known as the Sherman Brothers. »

James Franco is coming on board “Alien: Covenant,” the sequel to Ridley Scott’s “Prometheus.”
He joins Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace, and Guy Pearce — who are reprising their roles from “Prometheus” — along with newcomers Katherine Waterston, Demian Bichir, Billy Crudup, and Danny McBride. 20th Century Fox had no comment.
Scott is directing from a script by Jack Paglen, Michael Green, and John Logan. The film follows the colony ship Covenant as it heads toward a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy. Crew members discover what they believe to be an uncharted paradise, which turns out to be a dark, menacing world in which the only inhabitant is the synthetic David (Fassbender), a survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.

Charles Aidikoff, who owned and operated the Charles Aidikoff Screening Room for a half-century, has died, family members told The Hollywood Reporter. He was 101.
Aidikoff died at home in his sleep of natural causes.
In 1966, Aidikoff opened the first Charles Aidikoff Screening Room at 9255 Sunset Blvd., where it remained until moving to 150 South Rodeo Drive in 1990. He sold it in 2010 to an outside consortium but continued to come into work every day until it closed in August 2015.
