Live by Night (2016) - [Opens 12/25]- Crime | Drama
A story set in the Prohibition Era and centered around a group of individuals and their dealings in the world of organized crime.
Director:Ben Affleck |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Looks like we'll need to press pause momentarily on Ben Affleck's hot streak as an actor/director as the general talk about his Prohibition Era crime drama is a bloated and relatively lifeless affair -- especially when you consider what he achieved as a filmmaker up until this point. We're most interested in seeing how audiences react, however, since this genre can be critic-proof at times.
Hidden Figures (2016) - [Opens 12/25]- Drama
A team of African-American women provide NASA with important mathematical data needed to launch the program's first successful space missions.
Director:Theodore Melfi |

The Buzz: An untold story for an under-served community, Hidden Figures could become, on average, one of the most popular movies this year. Having raked in awards for its ensemble cast to "Runnin'" (the movie's theme song courtesy of Pharrell Williams), Hidden Figures also is enjoying warm reviews. Oscar-wise, Octavia Spencer appears to be a lock for a Best Supporting Actress nomination; noms in the Best Picture and Best Song categories seem likely as well.
Fences (2016) - [Nationwide expansion on 12/25]- Drama
An African-American father struggles with race relations in the United States while trying to raise his family in the 1950s and coming to terms with the events of his life.
Director:Denzel Washington |

The Buzz: When I first saw the trailer for Denzel Washington's new movie, my first thought was "this is the scene they will play just before he wins the award for Best Actor." They may sound like an exaggeration but from the reviews I've read recently, Denzel and Viola give such raw and emotional performances, they will be sure contenders i noted awards season. Regardless, I can't wait to see the film if I was that moved by the trailer. - Michelle
Gold (2016) - [Opens 12/25]- Adventure | Drama | Thriller
An unlikely pair venture to the Indonesian jungle in search of gold.
Director:Stephen Gaghan |
|

The Buzz: It feels like Matthew McConaughey patiently chose his next projects after the bonkers run he had with Interstellar, "True Detective," and Dallas Buyers Club. We're interested in this particular adventure not because of its faux awards sheen - it's more about the chance to see how far McConaughey and the equally talented Edgar Ramirez detach from their hunk selves to bring this true story to life. - Arno
20th Century Women (2016) - [Opens 12/28]- Comedy | Drama
The story of three women who explore love and freedom in Southern California during the late 1970s.
Director:Mike Mills |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Beginners director Mike Mills is back with a story that's a tribute to his mother and clear shot for Annette Bening's fifth Oscar nomination. Personally, I'm a sucker for this time period, locale, genre, and actress, but I would also love to hear what Bening might have to say on stage at the Academy Awards this year. - Arno
Paterson (2016) - [Opens 12/28]- Comedy | Drama
A quiet observation of the triumphs and defeats of daily life, along with the poetry evident in its smallest details.
Director:Jim Jarmusch |
|

The Buzz: For me, Adam Driver is one of the greatest actors of his generation and any opportunity to see him on screen is worth taking. This film is also notable for winning the Palm Dog at Cannes, rewarding the performance of Driver's canine companion, Marvin, played by the late Nellie. - Michael
Toni Erdmann (2016) - [Opens 12/25]- Comedy | Drama
A practical joking father tries to reconnect with his hard working daughter by creating an outrageous alter ego and posing as her CEO's life coach.
Director:Maren Ade |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: This hilarious father-daughter story topped critics lists at this year's Cannes Film Festival and has been picking up audience awards ever since. If you've never seen a German comedy that runs for nearly three hours, make this your first. - Michael
