The Oscar race for best documentary got a lot narrower this week, with the release of the shortlist featuring the 15 titles that will vie for a nomination in the category. There are a lot of usual suspects — such as “O.J.: Made in America” and “Weiner” — but a couple of dark horses and surprises that could gain momentum as the season continues. That’s the starting point for this week’s episode of Screen Talk, in which Eric Kohn and Anne Thompson go through the list and discuss the reasoning behind the films that made the cut.

But there’s a lot more on our co-hosts’ docket this week. The Critics Choice Awards take place this weekend, and Anne explains why they provide some hints for which films may have a good shot at Oscar gold; then, they turn to some predictions for the upcoming Golden Globes nominations.

Oj is a miniseries not a film. It is excellent, but it’s not a movie. It can win all the Emmys, let someone else win the oscar.
