‘Mortal Kombat’ Reboot Finds Director in Simon McQuoid (Exclusive)

Simon McQuoid, best known for directing commercials, is in talks to helm the “Mortal Kombat” reboot for New Line.

James Wan is producing the movie, along with Michael Clear for Atomic Monster, and Todd Garner and Jeremy Stein through their Broken Road banner. Lawrence Kasanoff is executive producing. Greg Russo penned the most recent draft.

Based on the classic ’90s arcade game, “Mortal Kombat” has generated numerous pop culture properties, including the best-selling video game in its franchise, “Mortal Kombat X.” The “Mortal Kombat” games are currently developed by NetherRealm Studios, owned by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, with a team led by co-creator and creative director Ed Boon.

Paul W.S. Anderson’s 1995 movie revolved around some of the game’s classic characters, like Liu Kang and Johnny Cage, who were invited to a tournament on a mysterious island only to find out that the fate of the world hung in the balance. »

Emilia Clarke Joins ‘Star Wars’ Han Solo Spinoff

The galaxy far, far away is inching closer. The “Star Wars” Han Solo spinoff has tapped Emilia Clarke as its female lead.

The “Game of Thrones” actress will star opposite Alden Ehrenreich and Donald Glover, who play Solo and fellow smuggler Lando Calrissian, respectively.

Selma” and “Creed” star Tessa Thompson, “Power Rangers” actress Naomi Scott, and Zoe Kravitz tested for the role in October. Another group, which included Clarke, Kiersey Clemons, and Jessica Henwick, tested in London with Clarke ultimately landing the role.

Execs and directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who are also penning the script, had tested another group in September, but settled on another round after struggling to make their choice.

‘Fantastic Beasts’ Hits $23.5 Million in Two Days at International Box Office

Warner Bros.’ “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” has grossed an impressive $23.5 million at 47 international markets in its first two days of release.

The Harry Potter spinoff, starring Eddie Redmayne, generated $6.9 million in nine markets on Wednesday, the added $16.6 million in 38 markets on Thursday.

South Korea is the biggest territory so far with $3.5 million in two days with a 68% share of the top five, followed by France with a two-day total of $2.4 million. Australia took in $2.1 million in its first day Thursday with an 81% share followed by Russia’s $1.7 million and a 77% share.

“Fantastic Beasts” opened in Germany with $1 million on Thursday, matching the $1 million from Wednesday’s sneak previews. Brazil generated $1.3 million on Thursday for an 84% share followed by Italy with $915,000.

Chloe Grace Moretz and Sasha Lane are starring in the independent drama “The Miseducation of Cameron Post[/link].”

Desiree Akhavan, the writer, director, and star of  “Appropriate Behavior,” is directing “The Miseducation of Cameron Post” from a script she co-wrote with Cecilia Frugiuele. The story is based on Emily Danforth’s coming-of-age novel of the same name with the film is set in 1993 and centered on a girl forced into a gay conversion therapy center after getting caught with the prom queen.

Moretz is cast as the lead, an orphan who’s taken in by her ultra-conservative aunt. Lane plays her friend and fellow “disciple” at the conversion therapy clinic to which they are sent.

The 16th Marrakech Film Festival, which runs Dec. 2-10, will include career tributes to helmers Paul Verhoeven and Shinya Tsukamoto and thesps Isabelle Adjani and Abderrahim Tounsi.

Since its inception in 2001, one of the main objectives of the Marrakech fest has been to serve as a crossroads of world cinema, which is once again reflected in this year’s choice of homages, complemented by a country tribute to Russian cinema.

Warner Bros. Grabs Worldwide Rights to Spanish Film ‘Toc Toc’ (Exclusive)

Warner Bros. Pictures Intl. has grabbed worldwide rights, including Spain, to Vicente Villanueva comedy “Toc Toc,” one of the highlights in the 2017 movie slate by Atresmedia Cine, the film production arm of Spanish TV giant Atresmedia Group.

Toc Toc” adapts the same-title stage play, written by French author Laurent Baffie, which has been successfully released in more than 20 countries. It turns on several patients suffering obsessive-compulsive disorder who interact while waiting at a doctor’s for the arrival of their therapist.

Co-produced by Atresmedia Cine and Lazona, “Toc Toc” has just terminated a seven-week shoot in Madrid, and is scheduled for a summer release in Spanish theaters via Warner Bros..

Home-grown movies set to shine at Tallinn Black Nights

An increased cash rebate and co-production boom has resulted in a strong Estonian line-up for this year’s Tallinn Black Nights.

The Estonian film industry is picking up momentum, seeing an increase in domestic film admissions as well as a selection of awards around the festival circuit.

In Berlin earlier this year, the Estonian Film Institute (Efi) announced a cash rebate for foreign productions including full length features, documentaries and television series, which has in turn prompted a spike in the number of co-productions.

Tallinn: New Europe closes 'Zoology' deals in Baltics

Exclusive: Sales outfit also inks deal with HBO Europe for TV rights.

Warsaw-based sales outfit New Europe Film Sales has closed further deals on Ivan Tverdovsky’s supernatural drama Zoology.

The film has sold to Estonia (Estinfilm) and Latvia (Kino Bize), while HBO Europe has picked up TV rights for the Central Europe region.

Zoology played at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in July this year, where it won the Special Jury Prize. It has gone on to have festival berths in Toronto, Zurich and London, and also scooped the top prize at the recent Cottbus industry forum in Germany.

New Europe previously struck a deal with Arrow Films for North American and UK rights.

The film follows a middle-aged zoo worker whose quiet life in a small coastal town seems to be going nowhere until one day she undergoes a supernatural transformation.

Korean delegation cancels Black Nights visit due to political unrest

Exclusive: A sizeable group from the country had planned to attend the festival this year to celebrate signing a film co-operation agreement.

A South Korean delegation led by Seoul mayor Won-soon Park [pictured] has cancelled a planned visit to this week’s Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival due to ongoing political unrest in Korea.

A letter sent to the festival by the Seoul Metropolitan Government describes a “political scandal that has plagued the nation” and explains that the “country and its people are at a loss and deeply troubled” by recent political events.

The decision to cancel the trip was taken by the mayor “to calm our citizens, to keep himself closely informed of the ongoing situation and to ensure business continuity as usual in a turbulent time”, the letter explains.

‘Speechless’ Big Winner as Media Access Awards Salute People With Disabilities

People with disabilities — aka the world’s invisible minority — were saluted Friday at the annual Media Access Awards, with producer John Murray reminding that their presence onscreen is not just appropriate, “it’s also good business.”

Murray (“The Real World,” “Keeping Up With the Kardashians”) was given the PGA George Sunga Award, one of seven prizes handed out at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills. Murray said that people with disabilities, or Pwd, “have been placed on the margins and sidelines of TV.” He pointed out that his A&E reality-show “Born This Way,” about seven individuals with Down syndrome, increased viewership more than 80% during its first season, so depiction “is not only the right thing to do, it’s also good business.”
