11 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Dwayne Johnson’s HBO series “Ballers” is moving to California from Florida for its third season and has been conditionally approved to receive an $8.3 million tax credit from the state.

Ballers” is scheduled to shoot its next 10 episodes in California, where it will employ 135 cast, 209 base crew, and 5,700 extras. The series will generate an estimated $33.5 million in “qualified expenditures,” defined as wages paid to below-the-line workers and payments to in-state vendors — making it eligible for a 25% tax credit for its first season in California, followed by a 20% credit for any successive seasons.

Ballers” is the seventh series to relocate to California under the state’s expanded tax incentive program, launched last year. It joins “Mistresses” (which returned to California from Vancouver); “Scream Queens” and “American Horror Story” (which moved from Louisiana); “Veep” (from Maryland); “Secrets and Lies” (from North Carolina); and ABC’s “American Crime” (which recently moved from Texas).

TV Ratings: ‘This Is Us’ Draws Largest Audience Yet, ‘Rudolph’ Stays Lit

9 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

More like “This Is Unstoppable”: NBC’s “This Is Us” is no longer just a bona fide hit, it’s turning into a shining beacon for the network. In the usually dark doldrums of November, the Dan Fogelman drama drew a 2.7 rating in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and 10.56 million viewers in Nielsen’s preliminary ratings for Tuesday, the show’s biggest total audience yet and a mere tenth below the series high in the demo. Lead-in “The Voice” pulled in a low 1.9 in the demo and 10.6 million viewers, but “This Is Us” helped boost lead-out “Chicago Fire” from the previous week in the demo, with a 1.7 and 8.02 million viewers.

Don’t sleep on CBS’ annual broadcast of “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” though. The 8 p.m. telecast beat out “The Voice” in the 18-49 and 18-34 demos, with a 2.3 in the 18-49 demo. “Rudolph” also pulled in 9.45 million viewers. CBS was in repeats the rest of the »

Matt Lauer Staying Put at Today Show

12 hours ago | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

“Where in the world is Matt Lauer?” Well, for the foreseeable future, he’ll be staying put at NBC.

The network has renewed the veteran Today show anchor’s contract for an additional two years, guaranteeing his on-air presence through at least 2018.

Lauer has seen his fair share of criticism over the last half-decade. He first took a beating for the controversy surrounding Ann Curry’s highly publicized exit in 2012. He was also put on blast earlier this year for his performance as moderator of NBC’s Commander-in-Chief forum, »

‘The Odd Couple’ Season 3 Not Getting Back-Order After 13 Episodes

29 November 2016 4:25 PM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

CBS is not ordering additional episodes of the third season of “The Odd Couple,” which will run 13 episodes, Variety has confirmed.

However, the show is not cancelled and will remain in contention for a fourth season, though ratings will likely have to improve for the comedy to score a renewal.

Produced by CBS Television Studios, the multi-camera comedy is averaging a 1.0 Nielsen live-plus-same day rating among adults 18-49 over six episodes in its Monday, 9:30 p.m. time period, making it the lowest rated Monday-night offering for CBS.

While the Matthew Perry and Thomas Lennon sitcom is not receiving a back-order, the first two seasons of the show also had 13-episode runs. Seven episodes so far have aired for season three, so the current season will wrap after the next six episodes air.

CBS has a busy midseason slate coming up with new comedy “Superior Donuts,” plus a slew of dramas on deck. Meanwhile »

‘Arrow’ Producers Explain How the 100th Episode Became Oliver’s Flashpoint (Spoilers)

15 minutes ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Spoiler Alert: Do not read on unless you’ve seen “Arrow” Season 5, Episode 8, titled “Invasion!” which aired on Wednesday, Nov. 30.

In this era of “Peak TV,” guiding a show to 100 episodes is no easy feat. Tonight’s episode of “Arrow” had the unenviable task of being the middle installment to a three-part crossover, while also being a celebration to the 99 episodes that came before.

“That was the challenge — how much to service the 100th episode and how much to service the crossover,” executive producer Marc Guggenheim said at a press event with Variety in attendance, following a screening this week. “It’s pretty obvious that we chose to go 100th episode.”

Guggenheim said it was Greg Berlanti who came up with the idea to separate Oliver (Stephen Amell), Diggle (David Ramsey), Thea (Willa Holland), Sara (Caity Lotz) and Ray (Brandon Routh), and drop them into the Dominator “matrix.” In the episode, the »

Showtime Re-Shooting Lena Waithe Pilot With New Director, Project Heating Up

39 minutes ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The long-gestating Lena Waithe pilot is finally seeing some movement over at Showtime — though not without some changes.

The pilot will be re-shot, and some re-casting is currently under way, Variety has learned.

Rick Famuyiwa will direct the new pilot, replacing Clark Johnson (“Homeland,” “The Wire”). Johnson helmed the original pilot, which was picked up in August 2015 and shot this October in Chicago.

With the new changes in motion, the project is heating up. Insiders say the cabler has ordered additional scripts, and are hopeful for a series order.

The pilot marks Famuyiwa’s first TV series project, though he directed HBO’s Kerry Washington pic “Confirmation.” The “Dope” director was also attached to “The Flash” movie, but dropped out. (Famuyiwa’s involvement on the Showtime project was first reported by Deadline.)

The Chicago-set pilot is described as a relevant, timely and distinctive coming-of-age story, which revolves around a young African American man in Chicago’s South »

State of the Entertainment Industry Conference Addresses TV Growth in Foreign Markets

1 hour ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The burgeoning television markets in China and India were two of the main topics of discussion at this year’s State of the Entertainment Industry Conference, presented by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, on Wednesday at the Loews Hollywood Hotel.

The 2016 edition, which was co-sponsored by Variety, featured a panel on the global entertainment industry with five executives from leading entertainment companies, who discussed how the industry’s recent growth in globalization has forced Hollywood to rethink its current strategy.

“Right now, the game that Hollywood has played, which is creating content in America and shipping that content and licensing it in different places, that game has stopped a little bit,” said Jason Goldberg, chief creative officer of digital, new media and alternative content divisions at Stx Entertainment. “It’s really about creating organic, real content on the ground in these regions, so I think that’s what we’re in the middle of right now.”
