Scarlett Johansson Crowned 2016’s Top-Grossing Actor By Forbes

28 December 2016 2:32 PM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Scarlett Johansson has officially been named the top-grossing actor of 2016 by Forbes.

Citing figures from analysis site Box Office Mojo, it’s been revealed that Johansson’s movies earned a staggering $1.2 billion globally over the past 12 months, placing her just ahead of Captain America: Civil War co-stars Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr., who were tied for second place with $1.15bn a piece. And though a role in Joe and Anthony Russo’s superhero tentpole drew in the biggest box office haul, it was really Scarlett Johansson’s involvement in Universal’s animation Sing, The Jungle Book and even Hail, Caesar! that helped her clinch top honors. For the sake of comparison, Jurassic World star Chris Pratt landed in first place last year, while Jennifer Lawrence, buoyed by the wildly successful Huger Games franchise, clinched the #1 spot back in 2014.

Felicity Jones Shows Off Jyn Erso's Glamorous Side In This Must-See New Photoshoot

24 December 2016 11:51 AM, PST | ComicBookMovie.com | See recent ComicBookMovie news »

Felicity Jones won an Oscar for her role in The Theory of Everything, but the actress has struggled when it comes to the blockbuster realm. Introduced as "Felicia" in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, it appeared as if a big role for her in the franchise was being set up...until it was scrapped altogether by Sony. Inferno also bombed earlier this year, but her fortunes changed with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.  A critical and commercial success (it's already passed the $400 million mark at the worldwide box office), it should help Jones' career take off in a massive way, even if we never see Jyn Erso again!  Now, thanks to Movie Hotties, we have photos from the actress' recent appearance in Glamour Magazine. As you can see, she looks a lot different to the time she spent fighting against the Empire, and it's now kind of fun to imagine »

The Rise of Felicity Jones: Inside Her Year of Oscar Buzz, Tom Hanks and 'Star Wars'

21 December 2016 9:30 AM, PST | Entertainment Tonight | See recent Entertainment Tonight news »

If Felicity Jones is having a moment, it's the type that stretches the very definition of exactly how much time a "moment" consists of. She's been having this moment for years now, ever since she won the Special Jury Prize at Sundance in 2011 for the indie gem, Like Crazy. It's a moment that saw her earn her first Academy Award nomination in 2015, for The Theory of Everything. All that being said, 2016 may have been her best year yet, career-wise.

"Look, I have a smile permanently on my face," the 33-year-old actress recently trilled to Et, pointing to her cheeks, which were in fact dimpled in happiness. "I'm just enjoying it. I love what I do, and it's lovely to hopefully keep doing. I'm enjoying every minute. It's a real ride."

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story movie review: the high price of hope

16 December 2016 6:57 AM, PST | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

MaryAnn’s quick take… There’s genuine fun here, but the humor is cynical, the heroics are tinged with regret, and it’s all delivered with a cold smack of — yes — political relevance. I’m “biast” (pro): massive Star Wars fan, don’t even get me started

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Damn.

Did we think, at the end of the very first Star Wars movie, that Luke Skywalker was a hero? He was nothing. Nothing.

Did we think Luke Skywalker was a hero? What he did was nothing to what we see here.

Okay, not nothing. But, as Rogue One reveals with brutal clarity, Luke’s lucky Force-assisted like–bulls-eying–womprats bombing run at the Death Star was only the final link in a very long chain of people doing way more brave and way more daring things. »

Can you feel it — an imbalance in the force?

It’s been there since 1977 when Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope arrived in theatres with young Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) appearing as the film’s single female lead opposite a galaxy full of male heroes and villains.

Although a princess, Leia was also a leader in the rebel force fighting the evil Empire. Unfortunately, her place in the Star Wars universe took a turnfor the worse in the next two films, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, as her role devolved into that of Han Solo’s maybe girlfriend and, worst of all, »

Sully movie review: he’s good people (and so is everyone else)

2 December 2016 10:24 AM, PST | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

MaryAnn’s quick take… The ultimate anti-disaster movie. A supremely gripping and powerfully emotional film about, paradoxically, what happens when everything works as it should. I’m “biast” (pro): I remember that day vividly…

I’m “biast” (con): …but I worried about how it would be dramatized

I have not read the source material

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

I was still living in New York in January 2009 when Chesley Sullenberger landed a commercial airliner full of passengers on the Hudson River.

Landed a commercial airliner on the Hudson River.

Not in. On.

And almost everyone walked away unhurt. A bit cold and wet. One flight attendant got a nasty cut on her leg. We didn’t know that at the time. All we knew was that a goddamn plane had landed on the river and everything was fine.

Playback: Ben Foster on ‘Hell or High Water’ and Being a ‘Builder’ as an Actor

1 December 2016 9:32 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Welcome to “Playback,” a Variety podcast.

On this week’s show, Variety Chief Film Critic Peter Debruge is back to discuss the upcoming critics awards circuit. Films like “Manchester by the Sea” and “Moonlight” are expected to do well, but what other corners of the season could these groups illuminate? Additionally, with “Silence” having finally screened, we discuss Martin Scorsese’s spiritual epic. Could it unseat the perceived Oscar frontrunner “La La Land” or is it arriving too late to fully connect?

Later on I’m talking to “Hell or High Water” star Ben Foster, who also turns up in three other films this year: “Finest Hours,” “Warcraft” and “Inferno.” He’s picked up a pair of supporting nominations this year from the Film Independent Spirit Awards and the Critics’ Choice Awards, and could be in line to join co-star Jeff Bridges at the Oscars.

Watch Tom Hanks Recreate Forrest Gump Scene for Runner Mo Farah

Tom Hanks is warmly known as America's dad, as he so hilariously pointed out on a recent episode of SNL, where he would later reestablish himself as a comedic mastermind with his new Halloween character David S. Pumpkins. Hanks is still out promoting his DaVinci Code sequel Inferno, and he hasn't stopped having fun. Having flown overseas to visit the Graham Norton show, the Oscar winner recreated one of his most iconic scenes.

Most actors don't like to revisit their past triumphs for various reasons. But Tom Hanks has never shied away from having fun, and he seems to embrace his past, perhaps more than any other currently living actor. Just a few months ago, he happily broke out in song, doing a rendition of his iconic Big rap from 1988. Now, he's recreating one of the more iconic scenes from the 1994 blockbuster Forrest Gump.

Will Big End-of-Year Openings Push 2016 to a Box Office Record?

22 November 2016 9:45 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

It’s a Hollywood ending few saw coming. Somehow, despite all the naysayers, the fretting over sequel-itis, and a dearth of blue-chip franchises, 2016 is on pace to set a box office record. In order to finish the year on a high note, studios will spend the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday periods offering up spinoffs to the “Star Wars” and “Harry Potter” series, new Disney and Illumination animated adventures, and a singing and dancing Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone.

“If everything pans out the way it looks like it will, I think we’re going to end up with another record year,” says Shawn Robbins, senior analyst at BoxOffice.com. “It’s been such a roller-coaster year that it didn’t feel like we were setting a new record, but the high points outweighed the low.”
