From ‘Zootopia’ to ‘Moana,’ How This Year’s Animation Race Has Embraced Female Empowerment

14 December 2016 11:17 AM, PST | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

In many ways, it’s been the year of the self-reliant female in animation, headlined by”Zootopia’s” Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin), Ellen DeGeneres’ forgetful but streetwise Blue Tang from “Finding Dory,” the eponymous teenage Polynesian in “Moana” (Auli’i Cravalho), the eternally optimistic Princess Poppy (Anna Kendrick) from “Trolls” and the trio of gals from “Sing.”

They reflect hopes and dreams and empowerment in both individual and universal ways. What’s more, their journeys are so relatable and inspiring that they’ve been embraced by audiences around the world.

Animation Roundtable: Seth Rogen and 6 More on Avoiding Ethnic Stereotypes and How to "Break the Mold" of Princesses

14 December 2016 6:30 AM, PST | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

"What are you doing here?" veteran animator John Musker jokingly asked Seth Rogen as the masterminds behind some of this year's eclectic lineup of animated features began to assemble at the Line 204 stages in Hollywood to talk shop. Not that anyone resented Rogen's presence, since Sony's saucy Sausage Party, on which he served as a writer, producer and voice actor, added some unusual R-rated spice to the mix. "That taco was amazing," laughed Mike Mitchell, 46, director of DreamWorks Animation's Trolls, as the group welcomed Rogen, 34, to their unique fraternity: filmmakers who can spend five years or more, sweating »

La La Land leads the 2017 Golden Globe NominationsLa La Land leads the 2017 Golden Globe NominationsAdriana Floridia12/12/2016 11:21:00 Am

The Golden Globes are like the slightly more fun and less serious version of The Oscars.

This morning, Don Cheadle, Laura Dern, and Anna Kendrick announced the 2017 nominees, which are voted by the Hollywood Foreign Press. While this group of people is significantly smaller and tend to be a bit more mainstream than the Oscars, the Golden Globes still act as a major precursor to the biggest awards ceremony of the season.

The Golden Globes splits its movie categories into two: Drama and Musical/Comedy. This makes it slightly harder to predict the Oscars based on the Globes winners since two strong films come out on top after the Golden Globes. This is especially true of this year when La La Land, a musical, is thought to be the Oscars Best Picture frontrunner. »
