“Office Christmas Party” is a winner on Friday during a sleepy box office weekend after earning $6.6 million at 3,210 locations, on its way to a $17 million opening weekend.
“Moana,” now in its third week for Disney, took in $4.1 million at 3,875 locations. Despite coming in second to “Christmas Party” on Friday, the film could still end up on top for the third straight weekend as estimates are set at around $19 million for the weekend.
No other new faces surfaced at the top of the box office as “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” grossed an additional $2.9 million at 3,626 locations on Friday, while “Arrival” earned $5.8 million at 1,615 theaters. “Doctor Strange” made $1.2 million at 2,763 locations, rounding out the top five.
