Oscars: ‘Rogue One,’ ‘Hacksaw Ridge,’ ‘13 Hours’ Mix It Up in Sound Categories

30 December 2016 4:30 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

This year’s contenders for the sound editing and sound mixing Oscars run the gamut from war epics to lo-fi musicals to sci-fi escapades. And it’s hard to begin anywhere else other than a galaxy far, far away….

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” feels primed to follow in the footsteps of the five previous films in the “Star Wars” franchise that scored sound notices, including last year’s “The Force Awakens.” It’s the most battle-heavy film of the series in some ways, basically a war film. And war films tend to fare well in the sound categories. The “Rogue One” crew, including mixers David Parker, Christopher Scarabosio and Stuart Wilson, along with effects editors Scarabosio and Matthew Wood, have 15 Oscar nominations between them.

Speaking of war films, Mel Gibson’s “Hacksaw Ridge” features an entire back half that puts the audience smack dab in the middle of a war zone, »

Holiday season heavyweights “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and “Sing” will dominate North American moviegoing during the New Year’s weekend, with “Rogue One” likely to win with $60 million between Friday and Monday.

Early estimates Friday showed that the second weekend of the animated comedy “Sing” will be a close second, with about $50 million at 4,029 locations. Sony’s second frame of sci-fi thriller “Passengers” should lead the rest of the pack, with about $20 million at 3,478 sites for the four days, giving the Jennifer Lawrence-Chris Pratt vehicle a $65 million total by the end of the weekend.

Disney’s sixth weekend of the animated adventure “Moana” is expected to earn $18 million at 2,775 screens for a total of $217 million by weekend’s end. Lionsgate’s awards season contender “La La Land” is forecast to finish fifth with $12 million at 750 sites for the four days, lifting its total to about $37 million by Monday. »

Dwayne Johnson Surprises His Dad With a Car for Christmas

30 December 2016 11:25 AM, PST | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

Is Dwayne Johnson the new Oprah Winfrey? The 44-year-old actor, who voices the demigod Maui in Disney's Moana, had fans recalling Oprah's famous "You get a car! You get a car!" episode when he revealed via Instagram Friday that he surprised his father by buying him a new set of wheels for Christmas. "He's had a hard life," Dwayne explained. "This one felt good." "My dad, Rocky Johnson is a minimalist. Always has been. Never asks me for much and over the years his needs are always the barest," the former wrestler continued, adding that his paternal grandfather died when Rocky was 13 years old. "That Christmas, my dad's mom had her new boyfriend over for »

‘La La Land,’ ‘BFG,’ ‘Hidden Figures’ and More Tune Up Original Score Oscar Race

28 December 2016 4:26 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

It wouldn’t be an Oscar season without a scandal of sorts from the Academy’s music branch. We got one this year: Johann Johannsson’s “Arrival” score was disqualified after it was decided the use of pre-existing music (namely Max Richter’s “On the Nature of Daylight”) diluted the impact of his original compositions, which are quite progressive in the realm of film music.

Bummer. But…typical.

At present, the presumed frontrunner in the field is Justin Hurwitz, whose lively “La La Land” music only really had one hurdle to clear: the mercurial nature of the branch. It might have easily been decided that the abundance of songs overwhelmed the interstitial scoring, but happily, that didn’t happen. Left to the Academy to decide, Hurwitz may well be primed for a pair of Oscars, both here and in the original song category.

The Best Musical Moments of 2016

The Best Musical Moments of 2016The Best Musical Moments of 2016Adriana Floridia12/28/2016 4:41:00 PMThere's nothing quite as beautiful as when a film has an extraordinary musical moment. It's especially impressive in films that aren't musicals, as these moments are often risky, out-of-the-blue, and special moments that catch us off guard but add another dimension to the whole. Oftentimes musical moments become iconic: think Ferris Bueller singing in the parade, the cast of Magnolia mouthing to Aimee Mann's "Wise Up" or the spontaneous dance scene in The Breakfast Club. Countless moments like these have become stand-out aspects of the films in which they live, and 2016 was no exception. While many of the films on this list are music themed, just as many are not. Whether or not the film's plot or genre centered around music, all of these 2016 entries were the most memorable moments from their films. We compiled »

We're breaking down the best new stars of 2016 and we can't wait to see them on the big screen time and again. Check out the list below!

Oscar Animation Roundtable: Building Worlds in ‘Zootopia,’ ‘Kubo and the Two Strings,’ and ‘Moana’

27 December 2016 3:03 PM, PST | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

This year’s animated Oscar contenders offer brave new worlds: a unique mammal metropolis (“Zootopia”), a fantasy Japan (“Kubo and the Two Strings”), an untapped Polynesian paradise (“Moana”), a fuzzy fiber art environment (“Trolls”) and a tactile hybrid between storybook fantasy and reality (“The Little Prince”).

Zootopia

Disney’s design team built an imaginatively diverse animal world where predator and prey co-exist comprised of five boroughs: Savanna Central (downtown), Tundratown, Rain Forest District, Sahara Square and Bunnyburrow. But what’s unique about Zootopia is that it’s a global city built by animals for animals.

As a result, there are multipurpose public buildings where all animals can interact with each other along with others specifically designed for certain mammals. However, human architecture is evident throughout while animal patterns are part of the design DNA. They experimented with different layouts for the various districts in a Disneyland-like pattern, which required both logistical and dramatic logic. »

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” remains powerful at the U.S. holiday box office with a dominant $15 million on Christmas Eve at 4,157 sites and projections of a $120 million-plus haul over the six-day Dec. 21-26 period.

Illumination-Universal’s animated comedy “Sing” easily led the rest of the pack on Christmas Eve with a solid $7.9 million at 4,022 locations, followed by Sony’s “Passengers” with $2.9 million, Fox’s “Assassin’s Creed” with $2.2 million, and Fox’s “Why Him?” which tied with Disney’s “Moana” at $1.8 million.

Paramount launched Denzel Washington-Viola Davis’ “Fences” with $750,000 at 1,547 sites in Saturday night showings and plans to expand the drama to about 2,200 locations Sunday.

Overall moviegoing slowed on Christmas Eve, as is typical, with “Rogue One” falling about 33% from Friday and “Sing” declining about 40%. Business should rebound sharply on Christmas Day on Sunday and on Monday, an official holiday for many.

How Four Animated Oscar Contenders Made the Cut for Disney, Laika and Illumination

21 December 2016 12:02 PM, PST | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Editing animated features is very different from live-action.

Not only does it take several years of iterative fine-tuning, but the major studios (Pixar, Disney, DreamWorks, Illumination, Blue Sky and Sony) also like to discover the movie and workshop it through story reels.  And, with “Zootopia,” “Moana,” “Kubo and the Two Strings” and “Sing,” there were a host of editorial challenges in dealing with prejudice among predators and pray, saving a Polynesian island and restoring its culture, a Japanese boy discovering his samurai heritage and putting on a talent contest and saving a theater.

Zootopia

Disney’s zeitgeist-grabbing frontrunner actually hit a narrative snag until the filmmakers flipped protagonists from Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman), the hustling fox, to Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin), the hopeful cop. “These films are really organic and it gets to a point where the film tells you what it wants to be,” editor Fabienne Rawley told IndieWire. »

2017 Oscar Predictions: Best Original Song

20 December 2016 1:29 PM, PST | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

Academy music branch voters tend to favor original songs performed by major pop stars. Which is why so many movies, from animated films to documentaries, try to lure big names to add Oscar wattage.

2016 is no exception. Top talent from Tori Amos (“Flicker” from Netflix teen sexual assault documentary “Audrie & Daisy”) and the late great Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings (“I’m Still Here” from Barbara Kopple documentary “Miss Sharon Jones!”) to Justin Timberlake (“Can’t Stop the Feeling” from “Trolls”) have joined the original-song action.

As usual, all-out musicals such as Damien Chazelle and Justin Hurwitz’s  “La La Land” and Disney’s animated “Moana,” with songs from “Hamilton” creator-star Lin-Manuel Miranda, are leading the pack. If the two “La La Land” favorites split the vote, Miranda’s song of yearning “How Far I’ll Go” could take the win.

The most in-demand composers often take on the most assignments. In 2016 top dog Michael Giacchino delivered original scores for three Disney movies: animated “Zootopia,” Lucasfilm’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and Marvel’s “Doctor Strange,” as well as Paramount’s “Star Trek Beyond,” competing against go-to composer Alexandre Desplat, who scored live-action “American Pastoral,” “Florence Foster Jenkins,” and “Light Between Oceans” as well as Illumination’s animated “Secret Life of Pets.”

Nicholas Britell composed both “Free State of Jones” and Oscar frontrunner “Moonlight.” And Rupert Gregson-Williams (“Hacksaw Ridge”) is competing in the category against his brother Harry (“Live By Night”).

Two stunning modern scores leaning to the minimal were disqualified: Kim Allen Kluge and Kathryn Kluge’s “Silence” (see why here) and Jóhann Jóhannsson’s “Arrival.” (He had landed a nomination for Denis Villeneuve’s “Sicario” the year before.) Taika Waititi's delightful comedy-adventure Hunt For The Wilderpeople found a spot in our top 10 films of 2016...

As is tradition at this time of the year, our writers have been voting for their favourite movies. In fourth? It's Hunt For The Wilderpeople...

4. Hunt For The Wilderpeople

There’s much to be said for taking a bit of creative license when adapting a novel for the screen. With Hunt For The Wilderpeople, New Zealand actor and filmmaker Taika Waititi takes a few tonal liberties with Barry Crump’s best-selling novel Wild Pork And Watercress, and in the process creates a winning comedy drama with his own streak of quirky humour.
