Oscars 2017 How the Election Will Impact Craft Nominations

17 November 2016 1:30 PM, PST | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Faced with the reality of  a Trump presidency, the Academy is doubling down on its Diversity Initiative. Already, the film industry is supplying more than the usual number of Oscar contenders boasting women and people of color, including the crafts.

Will voters be in the mood to send a post-Election inclusion message? You bet. The biggest impact could occur in the cinematography race, where only one person of African descent has ever been nominated (British-born Remi Adefarasin for “Elizabeth”), and no women. Cinematographer James Wong Howe, nominated seven times, won two Oscars, and Peter Pau one (“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”), while 10 other Asians have been nominated in that category. The last four cinematography winners are Latino, including Claudio Miranda (“Life of Pi”) and three-time winner Emmanuel Lubezki (“Gravity,” “Birdman,” “The Revenant”).

After being overlooked for “Selma,” Bradford Young has a second opportunity to become the first African-American nominee for his poetic imagery in “Arrival, »

There’s one director this year that has a chance at being a major crossover success by having two separate films nominated in both the best picture and best foreign language film categories: Pablo Larraín. This filmmaker has Jackie as well as Neruda and could join an elite group of directors who been able to have films — or even one film — in both of these major categories.

Jackie, which stars Natalie Portman as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, is considered a frontrunner in the Oscars race this year by this site’s namesake, The Hollywood Reporter’s Scott Feinberg. Neruda, which follows an inspector who hunts down Nobel Prize-winning Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, is Chile’s submission for best foreign language film this year and is considered a major threat in that contest. This would be a great feat — especially for someone who, »

AFM: Independent Financing Evolves, Adapts to New Market Realities

2 November 2016 10:00 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

With tried-and-true film financing models now far from reliable, with digital platforms offering a double-edged sword of bigger buying with aggressive competition, and with economic volatility overseas, many experts say global independent film financing is riskier than ever.

“We’re in a period of uncertainty, both domestically and internationally,” says IM Global CFO Miguel Palos, who’ll be speaking at the American Film Market’s Nov. 4 global film financing panel, the 360 View, which features industry heavyweights like Weinstein Co. COO/president David Glasser. “In the U.S., you [used to be able to] say, ‘If my budget is $30 [million]-$35 million and I spend $20 million on P&A, I’ll get a minimum amount from home video and a minimum MG from certain territories.’ Now Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and others are creating so much content that it’s difficult to model out what return you’ll get on your investment.”

But these new realities — and the ways buyers, sellers, and financiers are adapting to them — shed light on where the market is heading and some possible ways to navigate it. »

Before the Flood documentary review: DiCaprio takes celebrity climate-change advocacy to a new level (#LFF2016)

MaryAnn’s quick take…

Leonardo DiCaprio’s abashed personal journey to learn about global warming, overcome his pessimism, and find hope that there’s still time to make a difference. I’m “biast” (pro): we need to take serious action on global warming now…

I’m “biast” (con): …but making more documentaries about the subject is not enough

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Are you tired of celebrities getting involved in politics and acting like experts in fields they know nothing about? Leonardo DiCaprio agrees with you! At the beginning of Before the Flood which documents the first two years of his ongoing stint as the Un Messenger of Peace on Climate Change, the actor admits that, despite his longtime philanthropic efforts on environmentalism, he doesn’t know much about climate science and wonders whether the Un made the right choice.
