The Buzz: There's way too much for a diehard Star Wars fan to get excited about with the release of the first standalone film in the franchise. But let me just briefly mention a couple of things we can all look forward to: Felicity Jones as the central protagonist, a supporting cast that looks ever more diverse, a new villain to hate (with a white cape, to boot), and, of course, the return of Darth Vader. - Bret

Certificate PG-13   -   Drama

Retreating from life after a tragedy, a man questions the universe by writing to Love, Time and Death. Receiving unexpected answers, he begins to see how these things interlock and how even loss can reveal moments of meaning and beauty.

The Buzz: This project became quite personal for Will Smith; the material helped him find ways to cope with his father's passing while cameras rolled for director David Frankel, who seems to look for heartwarming scripts at this point in his career. Though it's not shaping up to be any sort of awards contender, Collateral Beauty has potential to gain serious word of mouth among older audiences throughout the holiday season and into the new year.

Certificate R   -   Drama | Thriller

In 1960s New York, Walter Stackhouse is a successful architect married to the beautiful Clara who leads a seemingly perfect life. But his fascination with an unsolved murder leads him into a spiral of chaos as he is forced to play cat-and-mouse with a clever killer and an overambitious detective, while at the same time lusting after another woman.

The Buzz: We're always intrigued by a Patricia Highsmith adaptation, especially one that puts the underrated Patrick Wilson in the middle of a murder mystery and so shamelessly cribs from "Mad Men" that Vincent Kartheiser has a supporting role.

An inspector hunts down Nobel Prize-winning Chilean poet, Pablo Neruda, who becomes a fugitive in his home country in the late 1940s for joining the Communist Party.

The Buzz: Pablo Larrain's will probably receive more attention for his other movie this year, but the director has received equally strong (perhaps a touch stronger) reviews for his inventive take on the life of Chilean poet Pablo Neruda. I'm looking forward to seeing Luis Gnecco, who played an integral part in Larrain's No, star as heavily fictionalized version of Neruda, and Gael Garcia Bernal as the completely made up private investigator on his tail. - Arno

A psychic works with the FBI in order to hunt down a serial killer.

The Buzz: Clearly there's some pleasure to be found in this thriller since wants to please you in a Se7en/"Hannibal"/The Silence of the Lambs sort of way. Something tells us there's a potential new drinking game if you take a sip every time Anthony Hopkins says "he's way ahead of us" in reference to Colin Farrell's character.

The Buzz: When I first saw the trailer for Denzel Washington's new movie, my first thought was "this is the scene they will play just before he wins the award for Best Actor." They may sound like an exaggeration but from the reviews I've read recently, Denzel and Viola give such raw and emotional performances, they will be sure contenders i noted awards season. Regardless, I can't wait to see the film if I was that moved by the trailer. - Michelle

Metascore: 96/100 (48 reviews)

The Buzz: This film is essential viewing on my path to the upcoming movie awards season. Casey Affleck is reminding everyone how good he really is, and the film is already generating some Oscar buzz. Plus, it's directed by Kenneth Lonergan, who has been nominated for screenplay Oscars twice and co-wrote Gangs of New York. The story looks to be filled with painfully imperfect characters on journeys of love, heartbreak, and redemption. Truly intrigued, and I have to know more. - Lance
