The Buzz: Jennifer Lawrence heads into space for the first time opposite seasoned traveler Chris Pratt with a script that has been off an on the development track for about a decade and a list of previously attached stars that includes Keanu Reeves and Emily Blunt. The results look like a fun watch but most reports say it's fully up to Lawrence and Pratt to keep us interested in the events, though neither of their careers will take that big of a hit if the movie winds up underperforming, or worse.

The Buzz: Any movie capable of marrying our ongoing fascination with singing competitions and hapless, lovable animated animals seems worthy of an extra look. And to be honest, I've loved every one of the film's trailers. Here's a title to enjoy with viewers of any age this holiday season. - Bret

Certificate PG-13   -   Drama | Fantasy

Metascore: 73/100 (15 reviews)
A boy seeks the help of a tree monster to cope with his single mom's terminal illness.

The Buzz: The third film from director J.A. Bayona, looks like the best kind of escapist fantasy. Childhood is a tough time and too many children are asked to cope with life-changing loss very early in their lives. During dark times, I think we all wish we had a monster to call. - Lance

- [Nationwide expansion]

Certificate PG-13   -   Drama

The Buzz: When I first saw the trailer for Denzel Washington's new movie, my first thought was "this is the scene they will play just before he wins the award for Best Actor." They may sound like an exaggeration but from the reviews I've read recently, Denzel and Viola give such raw and emotional performances, they will be sure contenders i noted awards season. Regardless, I can't wait to see the film if I was that moved by the trailer. - Michelle

Metascore: 84/100 (21 reviews)
In the seventeenth century, two Jesuit priests face violence and persecution when they travel to Japan to locate their mentor and propagate Catholicism.

When Callum Lynch explores the memories of his ancestor Aguilar and gains the skills of a Master Assassin, he discovers he is a descendant of the secret Assassins society.

The Buzz: I will follow Michael Fassbender anywhere, even if it's back in time to the Spanish Inquisition for a video game movie that has a giant, expensive question mark hanging over it. The first two trailers have been massively entertaining, and this is certainly one of the finest casts to appear in a video game adaptation. Plus, Justin Kurzel directed Fassbender in the underrated Macbeth two years ago, and I think the duo will bring something new and unexpected to the genre -- or it might just be a well acted travesty. - Arno

Certificate R   -   Comedy

Metascore: 40/100 (16 reviews)
A holiday gathering threatens to go off the rails when Ned Fleming realizes that his daughter's Silicon Valley billionaire boyfriend boyfriend is about to pop the question.

The Buzz: Perfect casting for this holiday comedy that's boldly gone for an R rating and truly does have us wondering exactly what will transpire before the Fleming family accepts James Franco's Laird as one of them.

The Buzz: I'm a Pedro Almodóvar completist, and though the script and its execution haven't earned the strongest reviews in Almodóvar's career, I'm intrigued by the fact that he has adapted short stories by Alice Munro and teamed with a new cinematographer, Jean-Claude Larrieu, whose work has received perhaps the best notices here. - Arno
