Clive James: ‘Ben Affleck has overcome the handicap of his absurd good looks’

30 April 2016 2:00 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

‘Redford got so bored by his own beauty that he would go off and direct something. Affleck probably has the same motivation, but he has a lot more directorial flair’

My copy of the 2012 Ben Affleck movie Argo lay around unwatched for a long time. A few nights ago, I fought my way in through the shrink-wrap and took a look. It revealed Affleck to be a terrific director as well as a fine actor.

That latter quality was probably the reason I had left the shrink-wrap intact for so long. In Pearl Harbor, Affleck had overcome the handicap of his absurd good looks and done a creditable job of bringing to life his role as a brave young pilot, instead of doing what the script deserved and setting fire to it before placing himself under citizen’s arrest for having signed the contract in the first place.

From tonight through May 4, the Independent Film Festival Boston (IFFBoston) "is offering 25 narrative features, 38 documentaries and 50-something shorts, along with panels and parties for their 14th annual celebration of all things cinematic," writes Sean Burns for Wbur. We're collecting previews and reviews. John Krasinski’s The Hollars opens this year's edition; Burns: "Closing night brings the directorial debut of actress Clea DuVall, of Girl, Interrupted and Argo fame. Boasting a to-die-for cast, including Melanie Lynskey, Cobie Smulders, Natasha Lyonne and Alia Shawkat, The Intervention chronicles a boozy weekend in which these characters give up on being 'fine' and 'embrace the reality of fine-adjacent.' Adjacent to the film will be DuVall herself." » - David Hudson »

Telluride Film Festival Sells Out Passes in Record Time

21 April 2016 5:00 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Passes for the 43rd annual Telluride Film Festival went on sale March 1, two days after best actress Oscar winner Brie Larson sang the Colorado event’s praises from the Dolby Theater stage at this year’s Academy Awards. Seven weeks later, they were completely sold out.

It’s by far the fastest the annual Labor Day retreat has reached capacity. Generally, there are still passes available after the Cannes Film Festival in May, but with the increasing popularity of the fest — which has played host to six straight best picture winners — they went like hot cakes.

So what can the cinephile crowds expect this time around? It’s a bit early for the annual guessing game, but there are many possibilities for this year’s lineup, which is always kept a secret until the day before the fest begins.

For instance, we could see “Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk” from director Ang Lee, »

The original cut of Batman v Superman was almost 4 hours long

15 April 2016 8:10 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

During an interview with Pro Video Coalition, editor David Brenner has been discussing his work on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, revealing that the original cut of the movie ran close to a staggering four hours.

Batman v Superman was a unique challenge in that we had not one but two protagonists, each with an alter-ego,” states Brenner. “So there was Clark Kent, Superman, Bruce Wayne and Batman. And then surrounding them are Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, Wallace Keefe (the guy who loses his legs when Wayne Tower falls), Perry White, Martha Kent, Holly Hunter’s character (Senator Finch), and still more characters orbiting them.”

“It was a lot to juggle,” he continues. “So the plot lines of a couple characters had to go.   These people are currently in the movie but we don’t track them, and it’s okay. What’s kind of fun is that we »

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits $800 million worldwide

15 April 2016 2:05 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

While it may not have been the box office juggernaut that many – myself included – predicted, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has reached another box office milestone this week, with the Zack Snyder-helmed DC epic hitting $800 million at the global box office.

Dawn of Justice has grossed $301.2 million domestically, and a further $499.6 from international markets for a total of $800.8 million and counting, making it the second biggest film of the year behind Disney’s Zootopia ($855.1 million), and the eighth-highest grossing superhero movie of all time after 2002’s Spider-Man ($821.7 million).

Does it have enough left in the tank to reach the $1 billion mark? It’s looking pretty unlikely at this point, it has to be said…

Ben Affleck officially directing and starring in standalone Batman movie

12 April 2016 9:20 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

After months of various rumours and speculation, Warner Bros. has finally confirmed that Ben Affleck will be directing and starring in a standalone Batman film in the DC Extended Universe. The news was confirmed at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Tuesday by Kevin Tsujihara, the studio’s chairman and CEO.

While up on stage and speaking about Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Tsujihara said (via The Hollywood Reporter), “It set up a great foundation for our DC slate, which includes at least 10 movies through 2020. I’m also excited to know that we will be working with Ben Affleck on a standalone Batman movie.”

Affleck took the stage with co-star Amy Adams soon after Tsujihara’s remarks to thank the cinema owners attending the convention for contributing to Dawn of Justice‘s box office success but didn’t mention any further details about the project.

Warner Bros. Confirms Solo Batman Film

Warner Bros. Chairman and CEO Kevin Tsujihara has officially confirmed that Ben Affleck will star in and probably direct a solo Batman film. No date has been given for the film yet.

The news we all knew was coming was finally announced by Warner Bros today at CinemaCon 2016 in Las Vegas. Kevin Tsujihara, head honcho at WB, revealed that Academy Award winner Ben Affleck—who vindicated himself to a legion of skeptical fans that lambasted him brutally when he was chosen as the new Batman—will definitely star in a solo Batman vehicle, which will be part of the expanded Dceu. Tsujihara also used the word “filmmaker” when describing Affleck’s involvement in the project, inferring that Affleck will likely be directing and perhaps even writing (Although he didn't outright say that). ‘Batman v Superman’: Where’s the Superhero Suit at Warner Bros.?

8 April 2016 4:21 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

When I finally caved for a second viewing of Zack Snyder’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” I spotted only six or seven other people in the theater. Even following a dramatic 69% second weekend drop, I couldn’t believe my eyes.

This is “Batman v Superman,” a blockbuster event meant to jump-start an entire cinematic universe, yet in its 13th day of release, the superhero pic mustered only $2.8 million, a number that couldn’t even match Marvel’s “Ant-Man” ($3 million), Snyder’s previous foray “Man of Steel” ($4 million) or even Tim Burton’s 1989 reintroduction to “Batman” on the big screen ($4.36 million). It was a heavily front-loaded release, to be sure: a $166 million opening was a rallying cry for proponents in the face of countless critical pans. But at this point, hitting the magic $1 billion figure in worldwide grosses seems to be out of reach.

Rumour: Warner Bros. considering theatrical release for Batman v Superman R-rated Ultimate Edition

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits $700 million worldwide

With Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice suffering a heavy drop at the box office in its second weekend, Warner Bros. executive Jeff Goldstein spoke out this week to suggest that the studio has “no concerns” about the film’s performance.

Well, the studio will be celebrating today, as the film has now crossed the $700 million mark worldwide, becoming the first Superman movie to reach that milestone, and the third Batman after The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises – both of which went on to gross over $1 billion. This coming weekend will likely give a good indication whether Dawn of Justice will have enough in the tank to reach that magical mark.

Henry Cavill and Zack Snyder on the chances of another solo Superman movie

5 April 2016 2:30 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Although Warner Bros. announced a sequel to Man of Steel back in 2013, the project took a back seat when the studio decided to bring The Dark Knight into the fold for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Both Batman and Superman were absent from Warner’s slate of DC movies through to 2020, there were rumours last year that Man of Steel 2 was in development, although reports of Mad Max: Fury Road helmer George Miller directing seemed to be wide of the mark.

So, with talk of a solo Batman movie intensifying, IGN caught up with Henry Cavill, Zack Snyder and producer Charles Roven to ask what the future holds for another solo movie for the Last Son of Krytpon:

“I do believe it depends upon the success of [Batman v Superman],” stated Cavill. “If this goes well then we can start negotiating with Warner Bros. to develop a standalone Superman. But they »

Warner Bros. is “not concerned” by Batman v Superman’s box office drop

5 April 2016 12:16 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Despite enjoying the biggest ever debut for a superhero movie, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice suffered a sharp fall in its second weekend, dropping 68% – the biggest for any Batman or Superman movie.

However, it seems that Warner Bros. isn’t panicked by film’s sharp decline at the box office, with the studio’s chief of domestic distribution Jeff Goldstein telling THR:

“We’re not concerned with the drop. No matter how you slice it, to get to $52 million on any given weekend is an enormous accomplishment. We’re most focused on where we are in total. And our global number is huge.”

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has earned $682.9 million so far, making it the third biggest movie of 2016 to date behind Zootopia and Deadpool.

Zack Snyder reveals his original ending for Man of Steel 2

5 April 2016 6:55 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Before the addition of the Dark Knight, Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice started its life as a straight-up sequel to Man of Steel, with Snyder and screenwriter David S. Goyer signing on to the project back in June of 2013. However, a month later, it was announced at the San Diego Comic-Con that the film would see Superman sharing top billing as Warner Bros. ramped up its DC Extended Universe.

Speaking in the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Art of the Film book, Snyder has discussed the original ending he had in mind for Man of Steel 2, and how ultimately it was that which changed the entire direction of the film:

“Originally, it was going to be a straight Superman movie. One of the ideas was that at the end of the movie, a crate of kryptonite would be delivered to Wayne Manor. That didn’t happen, »
