As our contribution to the celebration of International Mother Language Day, we are pleased to release Ethnologue, 19th edition.

January is generally the month in which we reflect on the past and think about the year ahead. For the Ethnologue, however, our year begins and ends in February. Later this month, on International Mother Language Day (February 21st), we'll release the 19th edition of the Ethnologue.

As we enter 2016, the Ethnologue staff and all of us at SIL International wish you the happiest of New Years and many blessings and goodwill in the months ahead.

As I have mentioned a few times in the past, the Ethnologue represents three generations of ongoing research. This project has involved thousands of linguists over the years from SIL International, from partner organizations, and from many, many individuals.

A motto that we have around here at Ethnologue Central is that we aim to provide language information that is Clear, Concise, and Comprehensive (and, if you need another alliterative item, Correct, of course). Those goals don't always align easily. Sometimes by being concise, we lose clarity.

Almost daily now we see headlines about migrants who are fleeing the violence in Syria and who are making their way into Europe and elsewhere with the hope that they might find safety in a better place.

I've been away from Ethnologue Central for several weeks now, not exactly on holiday, but certainly having a wonderfully productive time.  Most of this extended trip has involved significant events related to the Ethnologue.

Last month, I talked about the whiz bang process we use to transform the data we have locked away in our database into the printed volumes that you can order from your favorite bookseller.

Sometime in the next few weeks the Ethnologue 18th edition print volumes should become available through your preferred bookseller.
