Page-Turning Terror: 5 Joe Hill Reading Recommendations to Give You Frights this Fall

1 November 2016 2:49 PM, PDT | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

It may seem like horror is mainly used to elicit fear and terror, but its ability to frighten and rattle its audience is actually rooted in an unlikely emotion: sympathy. Even the most cynical character can be found worthy of redemption if the circumstances which jaded them are deemed tragic, and even the darkest villains are made more interesting by exposing their insecurities. It is this gray area in which brilliant author Joe Hill seeks to explore the darkest depths of the human mind throughout his portfolio of work, and the result of his inquiries is a large stack of fascinating publications.

Born Joseph Hillstrom King, Joe Hill is the son of Stephen King, the famous writer of iconic works such as Carrie, Christine, The Shining, Gerald’s Game, Cujo, Salem’s Lot, The Green Mile, Misery, and many, many more. Stephen King has become a household name, and although »

17 Gloriously Creepy Halloween Costumes Inspired by Stephen King Characters

28 September 2016 4:20 PM, PDT | POPSUGAR | See recent BuzzSugar news »

Stephen King is a master of terror, so it's only right that on the scariest day of the year we pay homage to him with some truly creepy Halloween costumes. Whether you want to go full-fledged nightmare (a blood-soaked Carrie), or you'd rather keep things toned down (everyone in The Green Mile), there's a costume for you. What's even better is that a lot of them are simple and easy to make, so you can probably just throw a little fake blood on clothes you have already and be on your way. Even if you're not a huge King fan, who knows - by the end of the night, you might find yourself with a little more in common with Annie Wilkes than you thought (wink, wink). The UK has chosen its favorite book-to-film adaptations

27 September 2016 3:39 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

To the surprise of no one, Harry Potter has just topped a UK list of fan's favorite book-to-film adaptations. How did your favorites fare? J.K. Rowling's adaptations also topped a similar list last year. Considering she's British and writer of one of the biggest franchises in history, I would assume Rowling's work will easily continue taking the top spot for years to come. Unless they decide to do a reboot which somehow turns out terrible. Let's not think about that. According to The Guardian, 32% of 2,000 cinemagoers put Harry Potter at the top of their lists. It's a relatively small sample of people living in the UK, but something tells me it would stay on top even if it were larger. Here's the full list as they voted: 1. The Harry Potter series (Jk Rowling) 2. A Christmas Carol (Charles Dickens) 3. The Shawshank Redemption (Stephen King) 4. The Lord of the Rings saga »

An Adaptation Of Stephen King’s Hearts In Atlantis Is On The Way

22 September 2016 5:17 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

It is a widely accepted fact that some of Stephen King’s best work is his stories about people living their lives, and coming of age against the tapestry of American history. Sure, he’s written some iconic, terrifying stuff that has led to some incredible adaptations (It, Misery, The Shining, Carrie) – but it is his less scary stuff (Stand By Me, Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile) that has perhaps had the most dramatic impact. This is surely the category that writer-director Johannes Roberts is aiming for with the upcoming film project Hearts In Atlantis.

The movie will be based upon the second part of the 1999 Stephen King collection of the same name, which comprises five sections – two novellas and three short stories. Together, the tales chronicle a passage of time that encompasses the Vietnam War, and feature a number of characters that recur throughout the collection. The first and »

The Walking Dead: NBC wanted it to be zombie crime show

29 August 2016 10:17 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Joseph Baxter Aug 30, 2016

According to Gale Anne Hurd, The Walking Dead almost wound up on NBC as a procedural about solving weekly zombie crimes...

Back when current juggernaut property The Walking Dead was just an indie comic book series about the seemingly generic premise of a zombie apocalypse, it’s understandable that pitches to networks about a TV adaptation would be met with different industry-minded ideas. As a for-instance, it seems that the folks over at NBC imagined Rick Grimes and co. nabbing undead crooks every week.

Addressing the audience at an Edinburgh International TV Festival masterclass, The Walking Dead executive producer Gale Anne Hurd recalled a rather humorous anecdote from the project’s nascent days. The then-would-be TV series adapting Robert Kirkman’s comic book series, still under the auspices of show creator Frank Darabont, received some crucial facetime with executives at NBC with whom the show initially had an overall deal. »

Stephen King Wrote A Short Story That Incorporates Batman, And You Can Hear It Right Now!

23 August 2016 4:27 PM, PDT | LRMonline.com | See recent LRM Online news »

Color me surprised or just plain out of touch and ignorant. I had no idea that in 2012, Stephen King -- perhaps one of the greatest modern American genre authors -- wrote a story that features Batman in a unique way. Yes, that's right. Stephen King of The Stand, It, The Dark Tower, The Green Mile, The Shawshank Redemption, The Shining, Carrie, Cujo, and Misery fame, incorporated the Caped Crusader into a story.

Though, before you get too excited, this isn't necessarily about Batman proper. No, this is a story entitled "Bazaar of Bad Dreams." If you recognize the title, that's because that's the name of a collection of short stories that King published earlier this year. Anyway, this short story, which was first featured in a 2012 issue of Harper's Bazaar, features a father and son having lunch together, reminiscing about better times. This is especially poignant because the father has a bad case of Alzheimers. »

Revisiting the ending of The Mist

Dan Cooper Jul 12, 2016

We look back - with spoilers - at the incredible ending to the film of Stephen King's The Mist...

Unsurprisingly, this article contains spoilers for 2007’s The Mist. This is a deliberately big spoiler warning, for a film you really don't want spoiled. Really.

Stephen King is a man of many collaborations. We suspect you don't need us to tell you that, as they span many mediums and have borne more sweet-tasting, fleshy morsels than the Man from Del Monte would know what to do with.

Without even mentioning his many silver screen collaborative efforts, there’s American Vampire, the excellent comic book series he has co-written with the wildly-talented Scott Snyder; Ghost Brothers Of Darkland County, a musical created in cahoots with T Bone Burnett (creator of that theme tune for True Detective amongst many, many other things). If we’re talking straight up words on »

Examining Hollywood Remakes: The Blob

25 April 2016 12:18 AM, PDT | Cinelinx | See recent Cinelinx news »

Our series on big-screen remakes continues with a cult horror film that kickstarted the illustrious career of Steve McQueen. This week, Cinelinx looks at The Blob (1958 vs. 1988).  Come inside to see how these two films stack up.

The original version of The Blob was a low-budget monster film made for $110,000. The titular creature was originally supposed to be called The Molten Meteor Monster, which then was changed to The Mass, which turned into The Glob, and Finally The Blob. The film's tongue-in-cheek title song was written by Burt Bacharach and Mack David, which became a hit. The movie was directed by Irvin Yeaworth who specialized in directing motivational educational and religious films, so this was a departure for him. The film was a moderate success, grossing over $4 million, although the critics weren’t overly kind. It has a 67% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite its cheesiness, its reputation has grown over »
