James Downey is the longest serving writer in the show's history other than
Lorne Michaels. Downey wrote for 30 seasons: (1976-1980), (1984-1998), (2000-2005), (2006-2013). In 1980, he left the show with
Lorne Michaels and the rest of the cast. In 1998, he was fired by NBC executive
Don Ohlmeyer. In 2005, he took time off to write a book. He retired in 2013.
