“He had a wonderful, caring, and kind heart,” his wife of 57 years, Vicki Williams, told Variety. “He was a wonderful husband, he was a fabulous father, and a devoted grandfather.”

‘Westworld': Meaning Behind Finale Title ‘The Bicameral Mind’

8 hours ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Spoiler alert: Do not read unless you have seen the season finale of “Westworld” To the very end, “Westworld” proved to be one of the most dense TV tales in recent memory. It is a show that dove into science, philosophy and high-brow art to present concepts that built on top of each other. And in the end, the concept that mattered most was perhaps its most complex one: the theory of the bicameral mind. Early in the series, Dr. Ford explains that the bicameral mind is the concept that prehistoric man viewed their own conscience as the voice of gods. »

‘Togetherness,’ ‘Rectify’ and More: A Tribute to the Canceled & Retired TV of 2016

59 minutes ago | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

Even in the age of peak TV, there’s not enough room for everyone. This year proved that, as fans lost some truly terrific series. Some series chose to close up shop, but many more were cancelled before their time.

Read More: Great Expectations: Do High Hopes for TV Shows Make You Like Them More?

From early losses like “Togetherness” and “The Grinder” to more recent removals like “Good Girls Revolt” (which is still being shopped elsewhere), 2016 saw quite a few quality shows wrap up far too fast. All three of those shows clearly had more in the tank, making their losses all the more painful.

Other canceled programs may be missed, but also weren’t exactly brimming with untapped potential. “Roadies,” “Aquarius,” and “Any Given Wednesday” were either given enough time to find that spark (and didn’t) or filled a genre need that could be replaced by something better. »

TV Review: ‘Shut Eye’ on Hulu

1 hour ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

If you’ve ever wondered what goes on those inside storefronts that advertise the services of psychics, “Shut Eye” does a good job of breaking down their rituals and scams. Those elements of the Hulu drama give it a bit of raffish flair, but premonitions about where the story is headed are a little too easy to come by. Despite a magnetic performance from its lead actor, it’s not difficult to see “Shut Eye’s” rather predictable trajectory.

Jeffrey Donovan played a spy who frequently resorted to subterfuge in the long-running USA show “Burn Notice,” which did a consistently fine job of capitalizing on his ability to play a cynical, conflicted man who can’t quite resist the urge to do the right thing. Now — following his entertaining transformation into a stubborn, beefy Midwestern thug in the second season of “Fargo” — Donovan is once again playing a character whose gifts for mimicry and charm are used »

Viacom’s Acting Chief Says ‘No’ to Vice Rumors

2 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Viacom’s acting CEO made several things clear Monday afternoon: He wants the company to focus on turning MTV around. He wants to see more momentum at Comedy Central. And he has no interest in buying a stake in Vice Media.

“Unequivocally I have no interest in buying a stake in Vice, and we are not going to do it,” said Bob Bakish, who was recently placed in charge of Viacom after serving several years as head of its international operations. His statement would seem to squelch a recent report in The New York Post suggesting Viacom was interested in investing in the growing media company that has made a successful market among younger news consumers. The report drew some notice because Viacom had owned part of Vice under previous management.

Bakish indicated two of Viacom’s big U.S. priorities were boosting MTV’s ratings and gaining new traction for Comedy Central. He »
