Perhaps because ABC owns General Hospital outright, the network sometimes doesn't announce if their sole surviving soap opera has been renewed for another season. (They didn't make an announcement about the 2016-17 season.) Of course, they'd certainly let us know if the show had been cancelled. Will Gh survive to see a 55th season  (2017-18)?
