Afm: Mister Smith Pacts Power its Picture Pipeline

4 November 2016 9:00 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

With its fifth American Film Market starting, David Garrett’s Mister Smith Entertainment has become an established  source of upscale mainstream movies in the turbulent international marketplace.

“I think it’s turned out well,” Garrett said. “When we started, I projected a much sturdier flow with Constantine, DreamWorks, and Broad Green. Everyone is finding it hard to get movies into production so one has to be much more judicious.”

Garrett and Ralpho Borgos, Mister Smith’s CEO and chief of international licensing and distribution, launched the London-based film financing and sales outfit just before the 2012 Cannes Film Festival opened. Recent titles have included Steven Spielberg’s “The Bfg,” the director’s first movie handled in the independent sector; “The Light Between Oceans,” starring Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, and Rachel Weisz;  “The Man Who Knew Infinity,” starring Dev Patel; and Jesse Owens biopic “Race.”

Gary Oldman Prepares For Liftoff In Latest Image For The Space Between Us

26 October 2016 7:40 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Forget Elon Musk, in Peter Chelsom’s heartfelt drama The Space Between Us, Gary Oldman is the high-flying scientist who dreams up Earth’s bold Mars program. He’ll play Nasa director Nathaniel Shepherd in the December release and thanks to Empire, we now have our first look at a bespectacled Oldman welcoming Gardner Elliot (Asa Butterfield) on stage at a space event.

Butterfield anchors the picture as the brainy teenager, who is marooned on the Red Planet after his mother dies during childbirth far, far from home. Struggling to connect with the denizens of Earth, Elliot strikes up an online relationship with Tulsa (Britt Robertson), despite the fact they’re separated by 225 million kilometres of nothingness – hence the title. He won’t be a Martian for much longer, though, with Shepherd and the remainder of Nasa drafting up plans for his safe return. But whereas it’s easy to »

‘Mr. Church’ Exclusive Clip: Eddie Murphy and Britt Robertson Discuss Bringing Susan McMartin’s Script To Life

21 October 2016 2:15 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Bruce Beresford’s newest film “Mr. Church” follows the relationship between talented cook Henry Church (Eddie Murphy) and young girl Charlie Brooks (Britt Robertson) over the course of many years. It’s based on a true story from the life of screenwriter Susan McMartin, who was helped raised by a local cook who taught her to believe she could grow up to be anything. Though the film was stuck in development hell for over eight years, and was once attached to Samuel L. Jackson, it was finally released domestically this past September. In a behind-the-scenes clip from the film, Eddie Murphy and Britt Robertson discuss bringing McMartin’s story to life. Watch the clip below.

‘Jack Goes Home’ Review

14 October 2016 8:00 AM, PDT | Destroy the Brain | See recent Destroy the Brain news »

Repression can be a horrible thing. As much as our minds would like us to forget trauma and pain, it’s proven fact that it’s often more damaging than it is helpful. So discovers Jack (Rory Culkin), a young man who has a baby due with Cleo (Britt Robertson) who gets a call at work that his parents have been in a car accident and that his father has passed away. He returns to his childhood home to care for his mother Teresa (Lin Shaye). Jack starts looking into his past, discovering forgotten secrets which will literally begin to haunt him.

Jack Goes Home is a movie which is best described as chilling. When Jack is relaying to Cleo that his father died in a “by the way,” matter of fact fashion, we already know something is off. Jack is damaged. He claims he’s made peace with it, »

Stars: Rory Culkin, Lin Shaye, Britt Robertson, Nikki Reed, Natasha Lyonne, Daveigh Chase, Louis Hunter, Serge Levin, Michael Sirow, Hutchi Hancock | Written and Directed by Thomas Dekker

How we deal with loss is a personal thing that affects us in different ways. Something we can all agree on though is that it can be one of the hardest things we ever have to go through. Jack Goes Home is a new movie that looks at coping with loss, or to be more precise, not being able to cope with it.

When Jack (Rory Culkin) receives news that his father is dead he travels home to look after his mother (Lin Shaye) who was also in the accident with her husband. Dealing with the loss, Jack begins to discover long buried secrets about himself and his parents that make him question everything about himself.

[Review] Jack Goes Home

12 October 2016 7:18 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

There’s no question that Thomas Dekker‘s sophomore effort as writer-director is a head-scratcher. What you as a viewer must decide is whether or not to keep scratching. I don’t think anyone outside of Dekker himself can truly unpack the type of psychological chaos occurring within Jack Goes Home, and I like that notion. This is an artist using his medium as an outlet to exorcise demons without necessarily factoring in audience expectations. It doesn’t supply easy answers, leaves a ton of loose ends as far as what’s real or fantasy, and turns deadly violent on a dime. It seeks divisiveness by throwing the kitchen sink of horrific tragedies onto Jack Thurlowe (Rory Culkin) until he can no longer breathe before letting him stew — simultaneously unhinged and deceptively anticlimactic.

But the latter isn’t deflating as much as unexpected. Most horror films begin where this one ends, »

Jack Goes Home Review

12 October 2016 10:27 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Revenge, grief and piercing secrets make Jack Goes Home quite the interesting genre hybrid, but Thomas Dekker’s disparaging darkness might rely a bit too heavily on haunted aesthetics. The story itself is one of loss and homecoming, hinged on a character’s wading through pools of emotional unrest. People cope in infinite ways, and Dekker’s appropriation of Jack is meant to show man’s ability to teeter at wit’s end – a brutal inner tumble that continually drags us down to deeper depths. Some unsettling imagery couples with a dreamlike waltz through personal strife, yet come the film’s twisted finale, Dekker loses grasp of the self-discovery at stake. Brittle reveals crumble at the cusp of understanding, meant to rattle instead of satisfy – the whole style over substance cliché rearing its head once again.

The Space Between Us: This Interplanetary Romance Looks Surprisingly Touching

30 September 2016 8:45 AM, PDT | POPSUGAR | See recent BuzzSugar news »

Asa Butterfield and Britt Robertson are the stars of The Space Between Us, possibly the least conventional love story of 2016. Gardner is basically a Martian; he is born and raised on Mars. Tulsa is just a regular girl, going to high school in Colorado. They happen to meet in a chat room; though Gardner (understandably) keeps his origins a secret, he seeks out Tulsa when he travels to Earth to find his father. It sounds far-fetched, but the trailer is actually really touching, possibly thanks to Banners's "Shine a Light." Watch the trailer and check out the pictures; the movie is out on Dec. 16! The Space Between Us Trailer – The Real Martian Visits Earth

30 September 2016 7:03 AM, PDT | AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news »

The trailer for The Space Between Us looks more magical than you might imagine from its premise, and while it probably isn’t something that will capitalize on the “Award Effort” release date (12/21), there are a lot of people who are really going to fall in love with this one.

Gardner Elliot (Asa Butterfield) was born on Mars, his mother being an astronaut who died on the red planet giving birth to him. He’s had the most sheltered life ever, growing up only knowing 14 people, and having no option to know any more, but he has recently made a new friend, Tulsa (Britt Robertson), through the magic of, apparently, planet-to-planet video chat.

While the idea of visiting Earth, and seeing more people, are huge draws, what Gardner really wants is to try to find his father.

The film can’t even get through its own trailer without bogging down »

A Galaxy Separates Teenagers In The Space Between Us Trailer

29 September 2016 2:30 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

As the idea of making Mars a habitable planet has become more of a possibility in recent years, it’s no surprise that Hollywood has followed suit with films that are less about invading alien hordes, and more about what life might be like for those first settlers. The Martian gave us Matt Damon learning to live on the red planet, and in its latest trailer, The Space Between Us gives us Asa Butterfield falling in love on the red planet.

The Space Between Us tells the story of Gardner Elliot (Butterfield), a 16 year old boy whose mother was one of the first astronauts to colonize Mars. Despite having known only 14 people in his entire life, Gardner forms a somewhat romantic friendship with Tulsa (Britt Robertson), a girl on Earth whom Gardner communicates with online. Hoping to find his father and meet Tulsa face to face, Gardner makes the journey home. »

Second Full Trailer for 'The Space Between Us' Starring Asa Butterfield

29 September 2016 12:38 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

"His heart can't handle our gravity... It's too risky!" Stx has released a new trailer for the film The Space Between Us, arriving in theaters December, about the first boy ever born on Mars who returns to Earth and must experience the planet (and young love) for the first time. Perfect timing to launch this trailer, with Elon Musk discussing his plans for colonizing Mars. Asa Butterfield plays the boy, who at age 16 finally returns to Earth. The main aspect of this movie is the love story angle and he falls for a "street smart girl in Colorado named Tulsa", played by Britt Robertson, but has his own physical struggles. The cast includes Carla Gugino, Gary Oldman, Bd Wong, Janet Montgomery, and Jenny Gabrielle. As much as I want to be excited to see this, it just looks so schmaltzy and goofy. I hope to be proved wrong when it opens. »

Watch Eddie Murphy sing the disco song that was a hit at his prom

Eddie Murphy’s newest movie, Mr. Church, took him back to his high school days. The comedy legend tries out drama in the film, playing Henry Joseph Church, a cook who has a unique friendship with a young girl named Charlie (Britt Robertson) and her sick mother. The film is based on the real-life adolescence of the screenwriter, Susan McMartin, and takes place primarily in the 1970s. One scene has Mr. Church seeing Charlie off to her prom for the class of 1977. Murphy’s own senior prom was in 1979, but it looked quite different from the California WASPy private school dance in Mr. Church. When I interviewed Murphy about the film, he recalled the song that got played over and over at his prom in Roosevelt, New York: “Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now.” The song by R&B duo McFadden & Whitehead rapidly became a hit after its release in »

[Review] Mr. Church

16 September 2016 11:30 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

If you didn’t know what you were getting into upon sitting down for Bruce Beresford‘s Mr. Church, you will following this onscreen text: “Inspired by a True Friendship.” The vagueness of this statement notwithstanding, the words ooze enough schmaltz to prepare you for the melodrama of death and miracles screenwriter Susan McMartin has concocted. Maybe she based it on a friendship she had with an adult male who become her father figure in a time of need or perhaps the entire premise is a purely fictional construct surrounding feelings experienced within a relationship devoid of similarities besides being between two people. All I know for certain is that those involved didn’t just want to make any old tearjerker; they sought to squeeze their audience dry like a sponge.

Despite the plot dealing with the cook (Eddie Murphy‘s Henry Joseph Church) a married dead man hired in »
