Bleed For This – Review

18 November 2016 8:29 AM, PST

Let’s return to the ring once more for another true life tale of triumph and tragedy all set in the world of the “sweet science”. Almost a year ago movie audiences were cheering on a re-invention of the fiction franchise began by Rocky with the spin-off Creed. And just a few months ago we watched the rags to riches to rags true tale of Roberto Duran in Hands Of Stone. Now, or should I say, “…and in this corner”, is the saga of Vinnie Pazienza, a scrappy young fighter from a working class East Coast neighborhood. Ah, but he’s not just fighting other contenders. No, his story mixes the standard sports flick with the “struggling against a devastating medical crisis” drama. It’s a story so incredible that it has to be true (who could make it up?), as Vinnie shows the world that to defy the odds »

Billy Lynn’S Long Halftime Walk – Review

18 November 2016 5:10 AM, PST

Ang Lee is a brilliant director but he seems to being aiming more at recapturing the technical innovation magic of his film Pi than making a good film, in his latest Billy Lynn’S Long Halftime Walk, with less successful results. Billy Lynn’S Long Halftime Walk focuses on a decorated Iraq War soldier and his squad in 2004, who are back in the U.S. making a good will tour, which includes a part for them in the Super Bowl halftime show. But the real point of this film seems to be its 3D photography and an amazingly high frame rate. However, the film’s technical wizardry will only be seen by audiences in New York and Los Angeles, not in the Midwest. »

Loving – Review

18 November 2016 5:01 AM, PST

Nichols Loving, a Focus Features release. Photo credit: Ben Rothstein / Focus Features. © Focus Features

Loving is wonderful, warmly romantic drama about the couple, Richard and Mildred Loving, whose Supreme Court case struck down laws that prevented interracial couples from marrying. Although the court case is part of the story, the film is really about the couple, Richard and Mildred Loving, childhood sweethearts whose deeply romantic love story is the heart of this excellent, touching film.

Jeff Nichols (Take Shelter, Mud, Midnight Special) directs this fine, realistic, gentle romance story, with fine performances by Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton as the couple. The couple’s beautiful love story is the heart of this film.

Audiences expecting a courtroom drama and in-depth legal discussions about the pivotal Loving v. Virginia Supreme Court case may be surprised by Loving. »

Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them – Review

17 November 2016 10:25 PM, PST

It’s usually reserved for summer, but for the next few weeks it’s “prequel” time at the multiplex. Of course summer has the “tent poles” and the “franchise” flicks, but two special cases are making a most momentous exception. In about six weeks (December 16 to be exact), film fans will all be abuzz, waiting to journey to that “galaxy far, far away” with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, an action fantasy set just before the events of 1977’s much beloved Episode Four. In the meantime, we’re getting a trip back to another movie fantasy world, that of Harry Potter. Actually it’s a history of that setting where “muggles” (human beings) and magical beings mix. This new film peaks behind the pages of one of the textbooks that Harry and his class mates studied at Hogwarts School. Its title? This beloved tome is Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them. »

The Handmaiden – Review

17 November 2016 9:43 PM, PST

Just based on who is telling the story, the narrative can completely change. It’s all about perspective. This becomes an important element in The Handmaiden, Park Chan-wook’s new film inspired by the novel Fingersmith by British author Sarah Waters. The South Korean director’s approach to the material is important. He shows a keen understanding of what the story is essentially about while giving himself a little bit of room to inject his own interpretation of the story. The key word there is little. The Handmaiden strives to be the erotic fantasy it wants to be, but still delivers as a sumptuous exploration of storytelling.

An orphaned Korean pickpocket (Kim Tae-ri) is hired to serve as the handmaiden to a young and rich Japanese lady living on a private estate. Little does the wealthy Japanese woman know, but the new handmaiden is secretly plotting with a conman to »

The Eagle Huntress Review

17 November 2016 4:28 PM, PST

If you look up the definition of “girl-power” in the dictionary, there will be a picture of this young woman: Aisholpan Nurgaiv- Eagle Huntress.

Sony Pictures Classics latest release, The Eagle Huntress, tells the amazing and powerful story of 13-year old Aisholpan and her family of traditional nomadic Kazakh people of the Altai Mountains, set against the magnificent and awe inspiring beauty of the Mongolian steppe.

For generations, Kazakhs have traditionally used eagles for hunting small game to feed and clothe their families. And part of that tradition is that eagle hunters are always men. But Aisholpan longs to join in this tradition after years of watching her father with his eagle. And lucky for her (and us), her father has no problem breaking tradition to help Aisholpan follow her heart.

Directed by Otto Bell, The Eagle Huntress is Bell’s first feature length documentary. Up until this, he »

“If you shoot someone in the head with a .45 every time you kill somebody, it becomes like your fingerprint, see? But if you strangle one, stab another, and one you cut up, and one you don’t, then the police don’t know what to do. They think you’re four different people. What they really want, what makes their job so much easier, is pattern. What they call a modus operandi. That’s Latin.”
