The Hollywood Foreign Press Association's 73rd annual event honoring excellence in film and television, hosted by Ricky Gervais.
I had heard that Ricky Gervais was hosting, and so I watched just to see him knock down the celebs a notch or two. Gervais did his stuff, even taking a swipe at Mel Gibson (although I would have introduced Gibson as "Hollywood's favorite Jew-hater").
Out of all the nominees in all the movie categories, the only ones that I had seen were "Carol", "The Hateful Eight", "Mad Max: Fury Road", "Danny Collins", "Trainwreck", "Love and Mercy" and "Ex Machina". Of the TV categories, I've seen scattered episodes of "Mad Men" and "House of Cards", while I've only seen the first two seasons of "American Horror Story". I like to think that Lady Gaga's win made millions of bigots drop dead in horror; I wouldn't call myself a fan of her, but I love how she makes the world's homophobic people go ballistic. I think that there should be categories for horror in the TV categories so that "Grimm" could win something. Hell, "The Big Bang Theory" deserves nominations.
My big pet peeve during the broadcast was the repeated mispronunciations of Alejandro González Iñárritu's name. I recommend that all presenters learn the correct pronunciation (iˈɲaritu). And remember, González is the paternal name, not a middle name, so you can't turn it into an initial.
In the end, I thought that it was an OK way to spend time.
