Did the New Wonder Woman Trailer Reveal the Real Villain?

3 November 2016 3:11 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Earlier today, Warner Bros. debuted the second trailer for its highly-anticipated superhero adventure Wonder Woman, which may or may not have dropped a huge bombshell, hiding in plain sight. While these details aren't confirmed, it's possible that Wonder Woman is following in the footsteps of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which used one of its trailers to confirm the presence of the oft-rumored Doomsday. There may be potential Spoilers for Wonder Woman below, so read on at your own risk.

This trailer gave us a new glimpse at Danny Huston's mysterious character, who still has not been officially identified at this time. We can see in the footage that he is a World War I German military officer, who is also seen being flung by Wonder Woman's Lasso of Truth. Another shot in the trailer showed a deadly gas being developed that could even shatter the glass in traditional gas masks, »

AFM: Lionsgate’s Patrick Wachsberger Promises Bright Days Ahead

2 November 2016 8:02 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Lionsgate, the biggest player in the independent market, is coming to Afm with one of its most ambitious slates following what’s been a year of mixed performance at best.

Expectations for Lionsgate had been elevated in recent years by the successes of the “Hunger Games” and “Twilight” franchises. “Now You See Me 2” was a winner but 2016 also saw “Allegiant,” “Gods of Egypt,” and “Deepwater Horizon” struggle.

Patrick Waschsberger, co-chairman of the studio’s motion picture group, remains optimistic. The longtime expert in foreign sales admits he’s still asked about “The Hunger Games” (with $2.8 billion in worldwide grosses) and “The Twilight Saga” ($3.3 billion).

“I tell people to be patient when they ask about another ‘Hunger Games,'” he said. “Independents have a more difficult time. And we’ve got a pretty strong slate that’s very diversified.”

Lionsgate is still taking big swings via its model of using pre-sales to reduce its risk. »

Two Teensy Reviews: The Dressmaker & Miss Peregrine

28 October 2016 11:30 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Presented to assuage Nathaniel's guilt from not having properly reviewed them when they arrived.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (Tim Burton)

Story: A teenager (Asa Butterfield) who just mysteriously lost his beloved grandpa (Terence Stamp), seeks out the home and guardian (Eva Green) he grew up with overseas. The home is hidden in a time loop (!) and under seige by eyeball-eating supernatural forces (!!!)

Review: Intermittently engaging but ultimately generic even in its "peculiarities". Butterfield is dull in the lead but Eva Green delivers (as always) from the sidelines. The premise screams out for a fuller miniseries treatment to provide depth and pathos rather than what amounts to a rushed peek at an admittedly intriguing freakshow.

MVPs Beyond Eva: Props Department & Set Decorators (love those lead shoes, all the photos, and the weird details in the rooms)

Grade: C+

Oscar Chances: No. Too underwhelming overall and Colleen Atwood, a favorite of Oscar's costume branch, »

Penny Dreadful

Created by John Logan

Starring Eva Green, Timothy Dalton, Rory Kinnear, Josh Hartnett and Billie Piper

Synopsis:

Victorian London is under threat as mysterious evil forces seek to envelop the world in darkness, with monsters and ghouls stalking the streets butchering and bloodletting. It quickly falls to a motley band of curious individuals including gunslingers, explorers, scientists and mystics to prevent evil from triumphing and save the land of the living from the forces of darkness.

Literature has produced many great dark creations like Dr Frankenstein and his monster, Count Dracula, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and Dorian Gray to name but a few. Film has often attempted to meld creations like the ones mentioned with often mixed success. We all remember the missed opportunities that The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003) and Van Helsing (2004) were.

However, where those films failed the television series Penny Dreadful succeeds, creating a »

Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children Review – Burton Manages Mediocre

5 October 2016 11:09 AM, PDT | AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news »

Though people seem to generally associate Tim Burton with a very narrow idea of stylistic and/or thematic efforts, it is becoming less meaningful as time goes on. With Big Eyes, Alice in Wonderland, Big Fish, and Sweeney Todd, Burton may have a certain penchant for letting visuals take over, but he isn’t in the pigeonhole of what leaps to mind when you hear his name. Big Eyes, in fact, is downright “normal.”

But, when Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children comes along with Tim Burton in the chair, it’s difficult to avoid certain expectations.

Those expectations are met well through the first half of the film, but somewhere around the introduction of Samuel L. Jackson as Barron, the villain in our adventure, the movie goes mostly cartoony, and the fun fizzles out.

Newswire: Weekend Box Office: Bank on the Burton brand

3 October 2016 10:28 AM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

One of the regular criticisms lobbed against Tim Burton is that his style has calcified into a brand: He’s less an auteur, the argument goes, than a Hot Topic huckster, churning out product for dyed-in-the-wool Nightmare Before Christmas fanatics. That may be bad for his art, but it’s undeniably good for business. To wit: While $28.5 million isn’t a record-breaking debut for a guy who’s made movies featuring Batman, the Mad Hatter, and Willy Wonka, it’s still pretty solid for a film with a title as unwieldy as Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children.

Granted, the director’s latest flying of freak flags is based on a bestselling Ya novel, which may account for some of the cash it amassed. But without any major stars anchoring the project (Eva Green isn’t quite an A-lister, for some reason), it has to be assumed ...

Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children Review

3 October 2016 8:44 AM, PDT | www.themoviebit.com | See recent TheMovieBit news »

With it’s tentacle mouthed monsters, period setting, and gothic fantasy bent, Tim Burton is the perfect fit for Ransom Riggs’ 2011 novel Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, a sort of what if scenario of the X-Men created with director’s distinctive style in mind. From a visual stand point, the movie is classic Burton through and through, being his most striking work in some time (Frankenweeine excluded). But as much as Burton’s imagination is allowed to flow unfettered, it can’t overcome the massive obstacle of a stagnant narrative that doesn’t let the strange ideas soar as high as they should. Asa Butterfield takes the lead as friendless teenager Jake who, having grown up on his grandfather’s (Terence Stamp) fairytales of a group of children with fantastic abilities that make their home on a remote Welsh island. Following the old man’s untimely death, Jake discovers the fairytales are real, »

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children Wins the Box Office with $28.5M

2 October 2016 11:53 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

September signifies the end of the summer movie season, which typically brings an end to huge box office grosses. Sony's western remake The Magnificent Seven won easily last weekend, but it couldn't repeat for a second weekend in a row, thanks to 20th Century Fox's Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. The fantasy adaptation earned a respectable $28.5 million in its opening weekend.

Box Office Mojo reports that Miss Peregrine earned a solid $8,092 per-screen average from 3,522 theaters. The film, based on Ransom Riggs' novel, was produced with a $110 million budget, so it still has some work to do in order to earn a profit. Debuting in second place is Deepwater Horizon, which earned $20.6 million from 3,259 theaters for a decent $6,321 per-screen average. Last weekend's winner, The Magnificent Seven, the Western remake starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt, dropped to third place this weekend with $15.7 million, with the top 5 rounded out »

Mr Burton's Box Office For CGI Whimsy

2 October 2016 10:53 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

If you were a peculiar orphan with supernatural powers could you imagine anyone more perfect than Eva Green to be your guardian? Tim Burton may not be the director he used to be in quality or bankablity but he was smart to latch on to Eva Green as his latest pale skinned raven haired muse. She ran so many circles around everything else that was happening in Dark Shadows (2012) it's a miracle that it was her character and not the film that cracked apart and crumbled. Her reviews are strong again for this new fantasy film.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children movie review: infodump, the movie

1 October 2016 8:10 AM, PDT | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

MaryAnn’s quick take…

Relentlessly dull. A tour of a strange world and “characters” little more than their “peculiar” abilities isn’t enough to whip up fantastical excitement. I’m “biast” (pro): I was a peculiar child, and I remain a peculiar adult; love the cast

I’m “biast” (con): mostly disappointed by Tim Burton lately

I have not read the source material

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

So it’s Harry Potter Lite. Very lite. No, wait: It’s X-Men Babies. In the land of Groundhog Day, or maybe in a Doctor Who-ish timey-wimey chronic hysteresis. Where they’re haunted by Slenderman. Later, there is a Bill & Ted reference. Remember the days when Tim Burton made movies that took your breath away with their originality? Where has that Tim Burton gone?

Okay, so lots of things are derivative. That’s not necessarily a dealbreaker. »

Review: Miss Peregrine’S Home For Peculiar Children is an Eerie Adventure Worth Taking

30 September 2016 9:51 AM, PDT | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

Imagine if, instead of battling Magneto and his robot army of Sentinels, the X-Men were hunted by Slender Man-esque creatures intent on eating their eyeballs. Throw in some time travel, a little shape-shifting, and Judi Dench wielding a crossbow (in a scene that feels like an homage to Feast), and you have a good idea of what to expect from Tim Burton’s latest film, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children.

Friendless in Florida, teenager Jake (Asa Butterfield) doesn’t fit in with his peers and can’t quite gel with his parents. The only person who truly understands him is his grandfather, Abe (Terence Stamp), who used to tell him stories about how he grew up on a hidden island with uniquely gifted children before leaving to fight monsters (of the non-human variety) in World War II. Jake grew out of those bedtime stories over the years, though, and »
