Beware Of False Prophets In First Trailer For Western ‘Brimstone’ With Dakota Fanning, Guy Pearce & Kit Harington

With westerns riding back on the big screen in greater numbers, we’re starting to see some twists on the standard genre formula. Feminist perspectives are breaking through in films like “Jane Got A Gun,” and though that picture faced an uphill battle to get made, the revenge story told through the eyes of a woman is not often seen in contemporary oaters. And that flavor is present in “Brimstone.”

‘The Edge Of Seventeen’ Director Kelly Fremon Craig Talks Mentor James L. Brooks, Hailee Steinfeld & More

A new, unique female voice is discovered with “The Edge of Seventeen.” Written and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig, the nascent filmmaker gives us an incisive look at female teenage-dom. Nadine, a never better Hailee Steinfeld, is already an awkward and isolated high-schooler when she finds out her best friend is dating her older brother, and it sets up a chain of events that’s both unexpectedly moving and hilarious.

‘Deadpool 2’ Lands A Director With One Half Of The ‘John Wick’ Team

It’s no secret that the “Deadpool” franchise has been going through some difficulties. Its director Tim Miller left the sequel over some head butting creative differences with Ryan Reynolds, the lead who holds much sway over the project. Following the filmmaker’s departure, composer Junkie Xl also bailed on the project too.

But there’s some light in the “Deadpool” tunnel as the project has found a new helmer.

Emilia Clarke Joins Han Solo ‘Star Wars’ Spinoff

Few actresses have had the near instant ascension that Emilia Clarke has already achieved in her career. She arrived almost out of nowhere to great acclaim as Daenerys Targaryen in “Game Of Thrones,” and outside of the blockbuster series she’s had mixed success with a role in the underrated “Dom Hemingway,” co-starring in this summer’s sleeper hit “Me Before You,” and playing Sarah Connor in the failed franchise reboot “Terminator Genisys.” Now, she’s getting ready to go to a galaxy far, far way.

Gearing up to win over many moviegoer hearts when it opens next month, “La La Land” is one of the most hotly anticipated films left to be released this year. Matthew McConaughey To Star In ‘White Boy Rick’ For ’71’ Director Yann Demange

18 November 2016 1:41 PM, PST

A couple years back, Yann Demange was hot in Hollywood and with good reason, as he had just impressed everybody with the visceral ” ’71” starring Jack O’Connell. And while director didn’t leap right away to a new project, his name was certainly around town, and he was attached to helm the corrupt cop documentary “The Seven Five.” Now he’s got another tale of moral duplicity on deck, coupled with a big name star.

‘Ne Me Quitte Pas’ Is A Sleek And Captivating Documentary About Self-Destruction [Review]

18 November 2016 1:06 PM, PST

Can the pathetic be poetic? That is the question we at the Playlist asked ourselves after viewing “Ne Me Quitte Pas (Don’t Leave Me).” Having won the Best Editing Jury Award at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2014, the Belgian documentary is finally getting a U.S. theatrical release at the Museum of the Moving Image from November 18th to the 27th. Presented in small increments, or chapters, the film begins with Marcel being left heartbroken by his wife who has found another man.

Tom Ford on ‘Nocturnal Animals,’ Loyalty And His Struggles With Materialism

18 November 2016 12:27 PM, PST

The first thing Tom Ford asked me when I walked in for our interview was where I was from. He couldn’t place my accent (or lack of one, perhaps). He then asked what cologne I was wearing (full disclosure: Chanel Allure Homme Sport). Needless to say, I can’t remember a filmmaker ever asking me what cologne I was wearing.

I discovered about 45 minutes later that upon first meeting Jake Gyllenhaal, he’d also asked him what cologne he was wearing.

‘World War Z’ Director Marc Forster To Helm Disney’s Live-Action ‘Winnie The Pooh’

18 November 2016 12:26 PM, PST

Winnie The Pooh” may be a beloved, well-known brand, but as the character make its way to the big screen in a live-action adaptation from Disney, the studio seems willing to some risks. First, they hired indie filmmaker Alex Ross Perry, best known for acidic dramas like “Listen Up Philip,” to pen the script. And now, they tapped a director whose last blockbuster outing as a production nightmare to get behind the camera.

Video Essay Explores Wes Anderson’s World Building in ‘Fantastic Mr. Fox’

18 November 2016 11:56 AM, PST

Whenever you think of cinematic world-building, a few movies come to mind. Those might include franchises like “The Lord Of The Rings,” “Star Wars,” or the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They might also be standalone genre features like “Children Of Men” or “Blade Runner,” which gets its own sequel next year. But one only needs to look at a single frame from Wes Anderson’s filmography to know how much extensive love, attention and detail the auteur filmmaker puts into every moment, something that’s massively apparent in “Fantastic Mr.

Diedie Weng’s ‘The Beekeeper And His Son’ Is An Intimate & Compassionate Story Of Strife [Doc NYC Review]

18 November 2016 11:24 AM, PST

Who would expect a family drama fueled by apiary disputes to be so captivating? Diedie Weng’s “The Beekeeper And His Son” reads as dry just by its title. Even 80 minutes of footage about bees and the keeping thereof sounds abidingly dull, the kind of low-urgency doc you’d maybe stumble across while mindlessly channel-surfing late in the evening; you’d watch it for lack of anything better, and you’d fall asleep to the thrum of the hive and the gravitational pull of your own boredom.

Chloë Grace Moretz, Sasha Lane & More To Star In Desiree Akhavan’s ‘The Miseducation Of Cameron Post’

18 November 2016 10:46 AM, PST

Two years ago, Desiree Akhavan immediately became a director to watch with her indie charmer “Appropriate Behavior,” a film we called “a supremely satisfying and irreverent take on the New York rom-com.” Since then, the filmmaker has mostly been under the radar, most notably doing a small stint on “Girls,” but now she’s back behind the camera for a potentially powerful drama.

Tye Sheridan Tries To Keep It Together In New Trailer For Neo-Noir ‘Detour’ With Bel Powley & Emory Cohen

18 November 2016 10:19 AM, PST

“Don’t regret the things you do, just the things you don’t,” says Emory Cohen in the upcoming neo-noir “Detour,” and that’s pretty much the sentence around which the entire movie revolves. Utilizing plenty of split screen, the film, which we described as a Quentin Tarantino knockoff directing a “Sliding Doors” remake, essentially folds two crime stories in one.

Directed by Christopher Smith, and also featuring Tye Sheridan, Bel Powley, and Stephen Moyer, the story follows a law-student who falls in a grifter, with their meeting leading to murder.

Chronic Pain Doc ‘All The Rage’ Is A Biased Look At A Marginalized Doctor [Doc NYC Review]

18 November 2016 9:25 AM, PST

Dr. John Sarno has, for many decades, been the face of a controversial movement in the medical community. As the head of the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine at New York University, Sarno pioneered a psychosomatic treatment for chronic pain that focused less on surgeries and physical therapy, and more on emotional repression. His patients, he says, suffer from tension myositis syndrome (Tms), a condition where symptoms are created by the mind to cover up repressed traumas from childhood.

“The Idea Of The Character Made Me Cringe”: Mike Colter Shares Why He Was Reluctant To Play ‘Luke Cage’

18 November 2016 8:59 AM, PST

Both A-list actors and up-and-comers can’t resist the pull of Marvel these days, and it seems like very few people in Hollywood have any hesitation at all when they get the call from the comic-book studio. But the flipside to that equation is that your career (and schedule) can become wholly defined by the superhero world. And that was just part of the concern that Mike Colter had when he was considering the title role in “Luke Cage.”

In a recent conversation with Off Camera With Sam Jones, Colter reveals he was wary of taking on roles that simply played on his imposing physique.

Warren Beatty Talks Turning Down ‘Boogie Nights,’ ‘Kill Bill,’ ‘The Godfather’ & ‘Superman’

18 November 2016 7:36 AM, PST

The laundry list of great films that Warren Beatty has been involved with as an actor or director (or both) doesn’t need to spelled out, but there’s no doubt the 79-year-old Hollywood veteran has justified his legendary status and then some. And while his catalog of pictures is unparalleled, it’s fascinating to learn about the movies that crossed his plate that he ultimately turned down, and Happy Sad Confused found Beatty sharing the reasons why he let go of some of those projects.

Legendary Pictures’ ‘Spectral’ Going Straight To Netflix In December

18 November 2016 6:40 AM, PST

Netflix have earned a reputation for having some of the best television around, and their documentary and original film slates are stepping it up too. But let’s face it, the streaming service is still bulked out by content they license from elsewhere, and some of the dustier corners of Netflix contain some real questionable titles. And “Spectral” is about to join them.

If this is the first time you’re hearing about the movie, don’t worry, because Legendary Pictures and Universal, who were originally slated to release it, have been doing a pretty good job of pretending it doesn’t exist.
