2017 Gotham Awards – ‘Manchester’ vs. ‘Moonlight’ – Winners List and Reaction

Ifp is handing out the 2017 Gotham Awards tonight in Manhattan. A show without “La La Land” and an awards body, unlike the Independent Spirit Awards, that actually rewarded “Paterson” and “Love and Friendship.”  This year’s show will be the first showdown between two celebrated Best Feature nominees: Barry Jenkins’ “Moonlight” and Kenneth Lonergan’s “Manchester by the Sea.” Both films are also nominated for the Indie Spirits’ Best Feature award.

Intense As Hell Horror ‘The Eyes Of My Mother’ Is Also Weirdly Beautiful [Review]

The opening 10 minutes of writer-director Nicolas Pesce’s “The Eyes of My Mother” plays like the art-film version of an old EC Comics horror story — like one of those “Vault of Horror” or “Tales from the Crypt” eight-pagers where a monster gets its comeuppance at the claws of an even bigger monster. In a remote American farmhouse in the mid-20th century, a Portuguese surgeon-turned-housewife makes the mistake of allowing a creepy drifter named Charlie (Will Brill) into her home, where he commits an act of unspeakable violence.

New U.S. Trailer For The Jean-Pierre & Luc Dardenne Produced ‘The Son Of Joseph’ Starring Mathieu Amalric

With so many movies coming out each week and premiering at festivals across the year, it’s inevitable that some will be forgotten. Especially on the foreign film scene, it can be difficult for those movies to grab the attention necessary not just to land U.S. distribution, but make any kind of stateside wave. But Kino Lorber are hoping they can find a crowd for “The Son Of Joseph,” a film we called “genuine, generous and joyful” when we saw it in Berlin back in February.

90-Minute ‘Westworld’ Season Finale Set As Showrunners Promise “Most Of The Questions Viewers Have Will Be Resolved”

The thing about building a mystery box show is that you have to deliver, and actually answer the questions and riddles you set out narratively. And so far, “Westworld” is doing just that. The high-wire sci-fi show continues to unfold its layered story, and just as often has been closing the loops on the various clues and details it has laid out. But there’s still so much more to figure out, and the good news is, the season finale will have plenty of space to do just that.

Ryan Reynolds Reveals He Tanked His Audition For ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’

To put it bluntly, Ryan Reynolds is currently “hot shit” thanks to the success of “Deadpool,” but it wasn’t that long ago when the actor was whiffing with one movie after another. And it’s not for lack of trying to get some good work, and as he reveals in a new segment from “Actors On Actors” for Variety, he auditioned for the mighty Coen Brothers for “Inside Llewyn Davis,” but alas, he didn’t get the gig.

Anne Rice Promising “A Television Series Of The Highest Quality” For ‘The Vampire Chronicles’

While the heyday of Anne Rice might be behind her, the author’s “The Vampire Chronicles” endure and continue to capture the imagination. All that being said, they haven’t had the best track record in Hollywood. The most famous adaptation, of course, is 1994’s “Interview With A Vampire” starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, and probably the less said the better about 2002’s “Queen Of The Damned.” A few years back, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (“Fringe,” “Star Trek,” “Transformers”) were going to bring the fourth book in the saga, “The Tale Of The Body Thief,” to the big screen, but that went nowhere.

Daniel Brühl & Luke Evans To Star In Cary Fukunaga Produced Series ‘The Alienist’

At one time, the television adaptation of Caleb Carr‘s bestselling thriller “The Alienist” was going to be directed by Cary Fukunaga, with Garrett Hedlund starring. But the busy filmmaker bowed out of the director’s chair, staying on to executive-produce, and Hedlund left as well. But the project is pressing forward, and has two intriguing actors to lead the series.

Daniel Brühl and Luke Evans will star in the drama set in 1896 New York City, where a string of brutal, gruesome murders of young male prostitutes indicates that a serial killer may be at large.

‘Cold In July’ Director Jim Mickle’s ‘Godforsaken’ Stalled As Sylvester Stallone Exits

A couple years have passed since Jim Mickle impressed with ’80s styled thriller “Cold In July,” and while he’s currently enjoying small screen success with “Hap & Leonard,” his return to the big screen with “Godforsaken” was very highly anticipated. None other than Sylvester Stallone himself talked up the project at CinemaCon this past spring, but it seems somewhere along the way, the actor got some cold feet.

Kathleen Kennedy Says Female Directors Can’t Come Into ‘Star Wars’ With “Essentially No Experience”

Filmmakers making the leap from smaller or independent productions to big budget blockbusters is nothing new in Hollywood. The results have always been mixed — just last year we saw both sides of the coin with “Safety Not Guaranteed” director Colin Trevorrow‘s “Jurassic World” and “Chronicle” helmer Josh Trank‘s “Fantastic Four” — but the industry has generally been open to giving directors a shot at transitioning to larger tentpole movies.
