Drive-In Dust Offs: The Stepfather (1987)

Without question, being a stepparent can be rough. It’s a balancing act between wanting what’s best for the child, and the need to ingratiate oneself and hopefully, earn and obtain love. This is a tightrope that Jerry Blake (Terry O’Quinn) has no interest in walking – if he can’t implement his perfect family plan, he switches policies in the most violent way possible. Welcome to the world of The Stepfather (1987), a pretty good thriller elevated to classic status due to a legendary performance by O’Quinn.

And while Jerry Blake has little patience for deviation from his ideals, so too do Henry Morrison and Bill Hodgkins – all identities that our stepdad creates in his twisted pursuit of perfection. (If at first you don’t succeed, kill and kill again.) The Stepfather proves that home is where the hurt is.

Released by New Century Vista Film Company in June, »

New Director Confirmed for Deadpool Sequel

Following director Tim Miller's departure from Deadpool 2, it has been confirmed (cementing previous speculations) that David Leitch will now helm the follow-up film featuring the Merc with a Mouth.

THR revealed the news of Leitch's confirmed involvement with 20th Century Fox's Deadpool sequel.

Filmmakers Rupert Sanders, Drew Goddard and Magnus Martens were also reportedly on the short list to helm Deadpool 2, but it was Leitch who got the gig following a successful meeting with producer/star Ryan Reynolds.

THR also reveals that 20th Century Fox is already keeping an eye out for another director to helm the third film in the franchise that's packed with self-aware humor, chimichangas, and bone-crunching action.

The lattermost element of the Deadpool franchise is especially well-suited for Leitch, who, along with Chad Stahelski, co-directed the expertly shot, superbly paced guns and fists extravaganza that is 2014's John Wick.

Review: Hell House LLC Breathes New Life Into Found Footage Horror

Thanks in large part to the overwhelming success of Paranormal Activity, the horror genre has been overflowing and oversaturated with found footage films. Cameras and editing equipment are now more accessible than ever before, so it’s only natural that independent filmmakers would explore the no-budget approach and try to strike the spot where Paranormal Activity’s lightning shattered the ground.

Unfortunately, that’s led to an overabundance of poorly executed movies made by filmmakers trying to make a quick buck rather than trying to make a good film. There have been a few diamonds in the rough, though, and thankfully Stephen Cognetti’s Hell House LLC is one of those rare gems.

On October 8th, 2009, a mysterious malfunction kills nearly every member of the Hell House crew during a haunted house tour’s opening night. Five years later, a documentary crew returns to the scene of the tragedy. While »
