Very Smart It is very useful, functional, and efficient, I feel like I'm learning very fast. It tracks how long it's been since you practiced one lesson or structure and alerts you when you should refresh. Also, you can earn points to unlock bonus lessons (like flirting in French. Voulez-vous dancer avec moi?) This app is great!

so easy but voices fail sometimes such a great language learning app it doesn't feel like work! I'm learning German through it right now and I love how the vocab builds but they continually bring words from previous lessons so you don't forget those too! the only downside is that sometimes the voices fail which is really important to me as I really want to make sure I get the pronunciation right! i really really hope they come out with Mandarin and Cantonese in the near future as those are the languages I really need help in!

Learning Made Fun My 8 year old son and I have been using your app and have had so much fun learning new languages. We started just knowing English. Now I can proudly say that we know German, Spanish, and are working on Portuguese. It's so important that people can speak multiple languages so that we can communicate with people from all over the globe. Thank you for this free, alternative to the overly expensive Rosetta Stone.

Good but could improve There is not enough emphasis on constructing the target language from scratch. You end up having a vast recognition memory but little else. You need to be able to formulate the words without help. There needs to more focus on speaking. This worked well on the iphone but on the android version you could literally grunt and it accepts it!!! Also what happened to Greek for English learners as was available on the iphone in beta mode but not on android. It is definitely less intutive to use.

Pretty great Obviously it won't give you the confidence to speak the new language with people, that's up to you. In all other respects it is brilliant! My flatmate got the app on the same day but he struggles to mimic the pronunciation and there is not really any way the app can correct him. There are other apps that cover that if it's a problem however. I love using duolingo because it's incredibly simple and fun.

Duolingo An app that makes learning a language simple and easy, it's done step by step and tracks how well your doing in a specific subject, very useful for beginners in a language but even for those experienced aswell. Only criticism is that some of the phrases duolingo uses are not logical for instance "they eat an apple". This is the only criticism I have off the app and I can show off that I speak German now :D

really helpful but it needs some additional languages I really enjoyed this app when I started to learn french because of the step-by-step process. It's like I enrolled myself on a french class. The problem is, I also want to learn korean and japanese but there is no way that I could find those languages in your app. I will rate five stars if you will add those languages. Thank you!
More info please OK, I love this app. Starting here so you don't think I'm picking on you, only making requests. Could you *please* put links from the app to the same course on the website. I understand that there are more details about grammar etc there. Unfortunately I've forgotten which email and password I've used for the app so I can't sign in online. A direct link (carrying over the login details) would be v helpful! Also could you add voice lessons to the other languages, like you have in the French one. Thanks!
The best language app out there Free or not this is by far the best language app I have ever come across! It's so well put together, I'm quite grateful it's free. I even managed to get 4 co workers and my daughter to download it and they are all loving it!
Easiest way to learn a language It's easy and fun learning a language with Duolingo. I love the varied ways they use to help you learn vocabulary and grammar without a lot of explanation. Bots are a fun, new addition to the app, I just wish they'd allow you to use whatever words you want. I also wish they didn't capitalize the beginning word of each sentence because it makes it too easy.
Sometimes difficult to understand I'm going through the French lessons and the male voice seems to mumble a lot... I have no problem understanding the female. If not for that I'd rate it 5 stars. It's a great app, and an excellent idea, just could he better executed.
Quick learning success It just lacks detailed grammar theory. Grammar is always useful, even if you're only aiming for conversational level. Also, the speech output (synhetic?) simply mispronounces some words, make sure to double check so you don't embarass yourself.
The finest lingo-app I know!! But there are some things that should be better.Ill give one: sometimes when you have a typo mystake he doesn't see that, and doesnt get your answer, and it is sucks. But most pf the time- he knows that it is a typo. Grate app, but can be better
Love it I am using this app to finish learning spanish, german, ukraion, ((forgot how it is spelled)) and hebrew. This is an amazing app. I suggest it if you want to learn languages. I'm also mexican american but I didn't know English that we'll so I used this app. It's free and it's really good.
Help. Voices fail. (Love the app though!) The voices have been failing a lot; in French and in Esperanto. Even when I press the word no pronunciation is heard_ no voice specially in Esperanto, hard to learn because I don't know how to pronounce whatever is written so please fix this. Love the app, it would be great to see the additional notes like in the website version.
So easy its like a reward So easy to use its like I'm rewarding myself at the end of the day. The lessons are fun and the app doesn't let you off if you mess up. Small mistakes like capital letters get a gentle reminder, but misspelling or mispronounce a word and it repeats the lesson you got wrong. I love that.
Great app, fun to use! Although I would recommend having some background in the language of your choice, this app is fun & helps keep vocabulary fresh! Especially like how it tests both written and spoken skills. Plus, how great is it that it's free? One suggestion: stop capitalizing the first word of each matching sentence, it gives it away.
Gamification Wins! Language learning so-so. Turning language learning into a game is brilliant. The main problem is a severe lack of variety in the questions or the vocabulary, and doesn't focus on COMMON sentences. I answer basically the same question 2 or 3 times in the same 5min lesson. Is it Poivre or poivre at the beginning of that sentence... gee I wonder. Needs an option to disable the written exercises for people interested only in conversational skill. **Also needs more things to spend lingots on!!
I am learning German and Russian on this app, and the pronunciation is typically OK on the german. I can't say for the Russian. (I am mostly doing the German for review and practice) I find the Russian extremely difficult to get right, though. You should also add the ability to hear the words when you choose which phrase is correct out of 3. For others: This app really is free. You get tons of vocabulary and grammar practice for free. However, this app is probably best used with other resources as well.
Mostly good Love that it teaches you the language and that it provides you with some clues if there is a new word. Would be better if you could learn groups of words or numbers etc. Also teaches you some very odd and useless sentences, my favourite being "I am a duck and I speak English"
I haven't been able to use this app since Sep 2015. It says 'trouble connecting to duolingo try again in a bit'. My Internet connection is fine, app doesn't work whether I'm on 4g or WiFi. I can log in on my browser so its not a problem with my account. I tried logging in with my Google acct and it says 'unable to login with google try again later.'

Sorry to hear that :( Can you send us one more email to android@duolingo.com with app version 3.24 in the email title? Can you also let us know more details, such as what is your user id, what device do you use, etc? It will be great if you can also include some screen shots. Thank you very much! Habit Forming The app makes learning a language into a habit, and therefore you're much more likely to succeed. It can't really stand alone, as it doesn't help you commit things to memory as well as flash cards, and it doesn't explain grammar (at least for French), but for what it's worth, it's a good introduction to a new language.
Amazing language learning app This app is absolutely fantastic. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it lacks some sophistication- for a lack of better word. For example, I wish it would specify when a word is for a more formal conversation versus a more informal one. They show many words with a single meaning but they don't specify when to use what. I always have to do my own research to confirm. Also the pronunciations are a little off sometimes. Otherwise, what a treat this is!!
You actually learn! I'm 28 days now! Total streakin' lol 🐵🐮 I love being able to review old lessons. It is starting to sink in! I'm able to string simple sentences together! Im wondering when there will be more 'extra' lessons? Where was this 20yrs ago!!
In at the deep end but fun. As the title suggests you are pretty much thrown in at the deep end as you start and have to guess a lot of the new words as you learn then. However it is a really fun and simple way to improve your vocabulary and learn a new language. It's broken down into easy to manage lessons and there is even a tailored lesson to make sure you have retained information from previous ones. Would highly recommend.
Fulfilling It goes at your speed. I strait up suck at languages and I'm actually learning some things, thought that would never happen. It's good at motivating you and giving you positive reinforcement. I still skip days and have to go back to review the basics every other time but it remembers what you are good at and what your struggle with. I feel pretty good about myself when I finish a lesson--triumphant. I recommend this app for casual learning!
Be travel ready Super fun to take up and keep up lessons. Easy to incorporate into daily schedule. Only got through primary levels before my travels to France and Italy, but it felt like it made a difference.
This is great! I told my niece that Rosetta Stone doesn't have Norwegian as a language choice, so she installed this app for me, and I have been loving it! I'm building a vocabulary and trying to learn to speak the language, my mother's tongue.
Fun to Learn, Less Speaking Practice Than I'd Like I love this app, great for learning new languages and they have a nice variety! However, I don't feel as practiced in the speaking portion of learning. It does make you speak some phrases out loud, but not enough for me to feel extremely comfortable speaking a different language. That being said, I'm learning very rapidly and loving it! Great app!
Great for Review Having minored in French at university, I wanted to keep up my comprehension when I moved to a non-French speaking area and Duolingo is great for review. When it comes to learning a new language it's great for words and phrases but not fantastic for understanding grammar. Wish they had more languages like Arabic, or Korean but so far it's great.
What? This app honestly isn't That good. I took French 1 and 2 and there is so so much inconsistency in this app. For example if you have to pair "IL y a" goes with "ago" but if you have to read or write a sentence it means "There is" . There are many things that need to be done to improve this app. More consistency for one. More accuracy for two. More realistic for three. ( I don't think I will ever need to say "I am a whale" in French. And that's just it.
Brilliant, fantastico Learning Italian, only had the app a couple of days and really love it, totally addicted.. cannot get enough... The concept is awesome for learning a new language, my only problem is remembering stuff I've learnt but I guess that comes from repetition..
Good as a refresher course I learned Italian many years ago but rarely used it since. This app is great to refresh your language and fill some gaps. It would be great to get hints on improving one's accent.
Love this app. i wish you could speak into the mic and the app can tell you if you are pronouncing the word right or not and some times the app will ask you to translate a word they haven't told you what it means so you have to guess. Other than those two things it is a fun and easy.
The Aleph is??? I want to So learn Hebrew. But your beginning course is more Intermediate than a beginner level. You have us download the Hebrew keyboard but don't teach us what the letters are. Which only confuses new learners 😟
You are making money now with ads!!! Making money isn't bad because you need it, but the bad part is that you're only earning money and you aren't improving the app nor adding new courses! Your app is perfect, but your teaching system deserves 3 stars, and I remove one more because you don't add courses we have been waiting literally for years! Such as Japanese, Chinese, Korean and more!
Trouble with login I love this app. I recently rebooted my Android and the app keeps asking me to login with a new name a d doesn't accept my Gmail login. I get shut out when it asks for my phone number. What's with that? Isn't the Google logon info enough? Please let me back In without having to sign on with a new account. Thanks
Fun and useful I've been using duolingo for a few days and it's actually a lot of fun! I started using it to improve my French (2nd language living in bilingual city) which is already good and I don't know how much it's helped so far, but definitely better than wasting time on social media or phone games. Perfect for bus rides
Duolingo still my favorite, october 2016 Duolingo gives you a chance to study at your own pace. Languages from everywhere by teams of multi-lingualists. A few features available online only, such as trying out and giving feedback on newly hatching language pairs as teams are finishing up. (As of October 2016), Ads at end of some sections. I just skip them. I would rather pay for app than have ads because it interrupts concentrating and the fun of using Duolingo.
1 question When I am starting with basics after watching a picture it asks me to translate a sentence. But the meaning of the words are mostly unknown. Specially verbs. Then how can we know the right answer?
