For ten years Efi Latsoudi has been supporting Muslim burials on Lesvos, allowing refugees to lay their loved ones to rest according to their faith. In 2015 she was arranging funerals every day.

Efi is a passionate human rights supporter, who provided a safe haven for thousands of the most vulnerable refugees arriving on Greek shores in 2015 at ‘PIKPA village’, the community she founded with other volunteers on the island of Lesvos. She was named joint winner of the UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award 2016 for her compassion and care for those arriving on the island of Lesvos.

The Nansen Refugee Award is UNHCR's top honour – recognising the unsung heroes who go beyond the call of duty for refugees. Learn more: unhcr.org/nansen
