‘Doctor Who: The 9th Doctor #7′ Review

25 November 2016 12:01 PM, PST

Written by Cavan Scott | Art by Cris Bolson | Published by Titan Comics

With some of the Who titles hitting it out of the park right now, one or two of the other Who titles are struggling a little to keep up. The Tenth Doctor’s book springs to mind, as does this Ninth Doctor title. They are not bad in the sense they lack any quality, but they lack some of the inspiration and general oomph of the other books. That being said, last issue was pretty entertaining, and I am certainly a sucker for anything featuring Unit circa early 1980′s. As you will recall, the Tardis pitched up in early 80′s Britain to find Unit under attack by monsters, and the key seemingly a certain Mr. Yaxley. Captain Jack paid a visit to Mr. Yaxley’s house, only to come face to face with an impressively huge monster…

Makoto Shinkai talks ‘Your Name’

25 November 2016 10:01 AM, PST

Your Name is the most remarkable success story in Japanese cinema in the last decade. As of writing, it’s the seventh highest-grossing cinema release in the country’s history, and the fourth highest-grossing Japanese film. And it’s pretty much come from nowhere. While Your Name’s director, Makoto Shinkai, has been making critically acclaimed animated films since 2002, they were modest releases commercially. Your Name has been more than a hundred times as successful, which Shinkai says unnerves him.

An animated romcom and fantasy, Your Name’s two main characters are Taki, a teenage boy who lives in Tokyo, and Mitsuha, a girl who lives in the remote Japanese countryside. Suddenly, these seemingly unrelated youngsters start swapping bodies on random days, so that Taki sometimes wakes up “as” Mitsuha in Mitsuha’s country home, and Mitsuha sometimes wakes up “as” Taki in Tokyo. At first both Mitsuha and Taki are shocked, »

‘Assassin’s Creed #13′ Review

25 November 2016 8:01 AM, PST

Written by Anthony Del Col, Conor McCreery | Art by Neil Edwards | Published by Titan Comics

The Assassin’s Creed seemingly ever expanding stable of books is of such strong quality that I wait to see every month if they can maintain that quality, or if one of the titles start to dip noticeably. So far none have, and that is because they have all managed to forge their own identities. Assassin’s Creed: Templars for example has a more mature readers feel to it, Assassin’s Creed: Locus emphasises the ancestors more. This book, the central Assassin’s Creed title is the more traditional AC book, in the sense that it focuses mainly on the central Assassins/Templar conflict in the present, and the ancestors stories are always secondary. In that sense, it is the glue that binds together all the other books.

‘Doctor Who: The Third Doctor #3′ Review

24 November 2016 9:01 AM, PST

Written by Paul Cornell | Art by Christopher Jones | Published by Titan Comics

The first two issues of this series have had me dribbling with excitement and nostalgia. Yes, not the most edifying sight you’ll ever imagine, but true. Paul Cornell has somehow managed to bottle the feel and look of not only the Jon Pertwee Third Doctor himself, but of the era, of the tone of the type of adventures The Doctor was experiencing back in those heady days. Being honest, the actual substance of the last two issues has been less important than capturing that authenticity, putting the reader back in that time and space.

For those that came in late, all you need to know is that The Doctor has been trying to help Unit fight off an alien invasion, an invasion of metal based life forms that can make themselves into various bigger objects and weapons. »

‘Deadly Intent’ Review

24 November 2016 7:01 AM, PST

Stars: Rebecca Reaney, Gus Barry, Elester Latham, Lara Lemon, Peter Lloyd, Shawn McDonald, Vic Stagliano, Adam Birdsey, Ian Birdsey | Written by Diana Townsend | Directed by Rebekah Fortune

It’s fair to say, I am on a pretty big indie-movie kick right now… Trying to rekindle my love of the the movie gems you can find out there if you just look past the Top 10 of the moment. In doing this we have created a spin-off of our podcast in which we will endeavour to promote indie cinema and indie releases on such formats as VOD, because not everything has to be capes and spandex – or break a billion at the box office!

Deadly Intent is a movie I would stick in the above category. A low budget, few thrills, intense psychological horror/thriller, that lives up to all that it promises. Think The Babadook and you’re somewhere close. This »

After having recently watched and reviewed the great sports documentary Ice Guardians, when Tri dropped into my lap it felt like the right time to give it a go and boy am I glad I did… Where to start with Tri?

First off, Tri is not so much a documentary as it is a scripted carefully and accurately portrayed story of a Triathletes journey from start to finish. On paper you have to wonder what is there to keep you in this flick, well I am here to tell you fine people, A Lot.

‘Lead Me Astray’ Review

23 November 2016 9:01 AM, PST

Stars: Jace Pickard, Alannah Robertson, Tim Page, Logan Webster, Tom Danger, Addi Craig, Val Athanassiou, Amanda Allen, Adib Attie | Written and Directed by Tom Danger

Some films manage to capture your attention with a piece of awesome poster art, which is something that Lead Me Astray does. What this low-budget debut for writer and director Tom Danger also does though, is to provide a movie that manages to impress!

When veterinary student Alexis Willard (Jace Pickard) confronts a thug harassing a woman at a train station, little does he know that it sparks off events that will bring his past back to haunt him. With his girlfriend, Lacy (Allanah Robertson) in danger, he must return to his past life of violence in order to save her.

While there is a low-budget feel to Lead Me Astray that does restrain the film in terms of what Tom Danger obviously wants it to do production-wise, »

‘Batman: The Telltale Series – Episode 4′ Review (PS4)

23 November 2016 8:01 AM, PST

All it took was a glimpse of a certain character to get me excited for this episode. I didn’t worry that Bruce Wayne was going to be in danger in Telltale’s Batman Episode 4: Guardian of Gotham, or that Gotham could lose the protection of Batman. I finally got to see Telltale’s version of the Joker and I wanted more. Now we have him though, is he worth the wait?

After the events of last episode, Bruce Wayne is now in Arkham Asylum. Looking for a way to escape his situation and to track down Lady Arkham and the Children of Arkham, he finds aid in an unexpected source. Is this smiling stranger to be trusted though? And can Batman save Gotham before it is too late?

Starting off in Arkham Asylum makes this episode feel different from the rest of the games. It is a shame »

‘Ash vs Evil Dead 2×08′ Review

22 November 2016 8:01 AM, PST

Things get more serious this week on Ash vs Evil Dead as the aftershocks of Ash’s therapy have to be dealt with. Thankfully this doesn’t mean that we’ve seen the last of the puppet that was such a hit last week. This time, we see Kelly have to lend a hand in ending the naughty little puppet’s influence.

Having seemingly given into Baal’s (Joel Tobeck) attempts to get control of him Ash (Bruce Campbell) is in full Ashy Slashy mode. Unluckily for Ruby (Lucy Lawless), Pablo (Ray Santiago), and Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo) they arrive at the asylum just in time to face him.

I was actually surprised that the episode would take place in the asylum, but it actually makes for a good environment for the chaos that takes place. For the most part, Ash is like a malevolent Jason Voorhees stalking his pray with »

‘Lowlife Love’ Blu-ray Review

22 November 2016 5:53 AM, PST

Stars: Kiyohiko Shibukawa, Maya Okano, Shugo Oshinari | Written and Directed by Eiji Uchida

When you decide to delve into Asian cinema, it is like a treasure trove sometimes. Sure, there are many genres such as horror that dominate sometimes, but there are also many more waiting to be discovered. One such treasure is Lowlife Love aka Gesu no ai, which is a must for fans of the filmmaking process.

Tetsuo (Kiyohiko Shibukawa) is a lowlife film director living off the fame of his one hit indie movie he made years ago. Now thirty-nine he refuses to move from the indie scene as it would go against his ‘artistic integrity’. Abusing his actors and fast losing their trust, it is not until Minami (Maya Okano) arrives at his film school that his true love of film is reignited. When he loses Minami to the corrupt world of filmmaking though, his world begins to unravel. »
